ElkePublished 2026-05-28Updated 2026-10-168 min readUpdated for 2026 cruise season

Quick Answer

Take a taxi from outside the port gate to the Ephesus Upper Gate (25–30 minutes) and agree a round-trip price, including waiting time, before you set off. Or take a Selçuk dolmuş to the Efes stop and walk about 1 km to the Lower Gate. Allow 2–2.5 hours on site, plus 45 minutes for the Terrace Houses. Start back two hours before all-aboard by dolmuş, or 90 minutes before by pre-agreed taxi.

Ephesus from Kusadasi Cruise Port: DIY Guide

Ships dock at Ege Port, in the centre of Kuşadası. Ephesus is 18–19 km inland, about 25–30 minutes by taxi. Entry is €40 and the Terrace Houses €15 extra (2026). Ship excursion prices vary by line, so check your cruise planner. This guide covers how to do it yourself and get back in time.

The Port

  • ·Terminal: Ege Port Kuşadası, operated by Global Ports Holding. You leave through the Scala Nuova shopping village and come out at the bazaar.
  • ·Tender port: No. Ships dock.
  • ·Town centre: 5–10 minutes on foot.
  • ·Ephesus: 18–19 km. Not reachable on foot.
  • ·Typical call: about 9 hours.

Getting to Ephesus

Taxi. Taxis wait just outside the port gate all day. Agree a round-trip price, including waiting time, before you set off. A good plan: drop-off at the Upper Gate, pick-up at the Lower Gate. Licensed taxis in Kuşadası carry Aydın plates beginning "09 T". A group of three or four sharing a round-trip taxi usually comes out well.

Dolmuş (minibus). White minibuses run between Kuşadası and Selçuk through the day, about 30 minutes to the Efes stop. Pay the driver's assistant in Turkish lira cash; ask the fare when you board. Ask for "Efes" and get off at the Ephesus stop on the main road, not at Selçuk bus station. From the stop it is about 1 km on foot to the Lower Gate, or take a taxi from the rank there to the Upper Gate.

Ephesus: What to See

Tickets (2026): €40 for foreign visitors, including the Ephesus Experience Museum. Free for children 8 and under. Open daily from 08:00; on the current timetable the ticket office closes at 17:45.

Enter at the Upper Gate and walk downhill. The first hour after opening is the quietest.

Route (about 2–2.5 hours):

  1. ·The Odeon, near the Upper Gate.
  2. ·Curetes Street, the main street down the slope. It jams first on busy days.
  3. ·Library of Celsus, the best-known monument on the site.
  4. ·The Marble Road, from the library towards the theatre.
  5. ·The Great Theatre, then out through the Lower Gate.

Terrace Houses (€15 extra, 2026). Covered Roman town houses with mosaics and wall paintings. Open 09:00–17:00, ticket office closes 16:30. Tickets are sold at their own booth inside the site, not with the main ticket. Allow 45 minutes. Many steps; not wheelchair accessible.

The ruins have little signage beyond the big monuments, so read up beforehand or book a licensed guide in advance.

House of the Virgin Mary

A small chapel on Mount Koressos, above Ephesus, venerated by Christians and Muslims as Mary's last home. There is no public transport up the mountain, so go by taxi or tour and agree the price first. Entry is charged separately at the entrance; check on the day. Allow 45 minutes plus the drive. Cover shoulders.

Şirince

A hill village of stone houses about 8 km east of Selçuk, known for fruit wines (pomegranate, sour cherry, peach). Free to wander. Allow 1.5–2 hours. There is a dolmuş from Selçuk bus station, about 20 minutes, but on a cruise day a taxi from Ephesus is quicker.

A DIY Day: 17:00 All-Aboard

Based on docking at 07:30 and a round-trip taxi agreed at the port gate.

Return Timing

The rule: start back from Ephesus two hours before all-aboard by dolmuş, or 90 minutes before by pre-agreed taxi. The drive is 25–30 minutes, but dolmuş waits are unpredictable and you may first need to walk about 1 km from the Lower Gate to the stop. Aim to be on board 60 minutes before all-aboard.

If a dolmuş does not come: take a taxi from the rank at the Ephesus stop or the Lower Gate car park, 25–30 minutes to the port. Call the port agent number in your daily programme if you will be late.

The ship's tour earns its price if you want Ephesus, Mary's House and St John's Basilica in one call, if you want a guide, in July and August heat, or if you have limited mobility, because coaches use the Upper Gate and walk you downhill.

Practical Notes

  • ·Cash: carry some Turkish lira for the dolmuş, water and small purchases.
  • ·Heat: little shade, and summer temperatures reach the high 30s °C. Carry water and a hat, and buy water before you enter.
  • ·Shoes: the polished marble is slippery, especially after rain. Wear shoes with grip.
  • ·Touts: "free" carpet or leather presentations near the port are sales sessions. Decline politely.
  • ·Accessibility: the Lower Gate is the easiest approach for wheelchair users, with a firm gravel path. A limited number of wheelchairs can be borrowed at the Lower Gate ticket office against ID.

Bottom Line

Ephesus is easy to do on your own by taxi. Enter at the Upper Gate, walk downhill, add the Terrace Houses if you have 45 minutes, and agree your return pick-up before you go in. Start back 90 minutes before all-aboard by taxi, or two hours before by dolmuş.
