Tromsø cruise port guide

Most ships dock at Prostneset, right in the city centre, so you can walk straight into town. Ships longer than 230 m use Breivika, about 4.5 km north: take the cruise line shuttle or city bus 42 (card or app only, no cash). The Fjellheisen cable car and Arctic Cathedral are across the bridge by bus, so start back 90 minutes before all-aboard from there and 45 minutes from the centre.

Tromsø sits on an island inside the Arctic Circle, and the season decides the day. From about 20 May to 22 July the sun does not set. From September to April the city is known for the northern lights, and from late November to mid-January the sun stays below the horizon. Prostneset puts you on the harbour in the centre, with Polaria, the Polar Museum and Storgata a short walk away. The two big sights, the Fjellheisen cable car and the Arctic Cathedral, are on the mainland side in Tromsdalen and need a bus. Tromsø had 180 cruise calls and more than 193,000 cruise guests in 2025.

When to head back to the ship

For a 17:00 all-aboard. Times count back from all-aboard using the travel times and buffers in this guide. Your ship's daily programme always wins. Re-time this to your own all-aboard.

Where people get Tromsø wrong: Walking from Breivika, which is about 4.5 km through an industrial area; take bus 42, the shuttle or a taxi.

Docking and getting to town

Walkable? Partly, about 5 min. From Prostneset, the centre, Polaria, the Polar Museum and Ølhallen are all within easy walking distance. The Arctic Cathedral is about 20 minutes on foot across the Tromsø Bridge, and Fjellheisen is further up the Tromsdalen side, so most people take the bus. From Breivika you need a shuttle, bus or taxi.

Transport

Return timing

From the centre, start walking back to Prostneset 45 minutes before you must be on board. From Fjellheisen or the Arctic Cathedral, leave 90 minutes before all-aboard. From the centre to Breivika, be at the bus 42 stop 75 minutes before all-aboard. The centre is small, but Fjellheisen depends on the cable car and a bus back across the bridge, and the queue down can be long on clear evenings. Wind can stop the cable car with little notice. Breivika is 4.5 km out and depends on bus or shuttle timings.

If you are running late: Take a taxi: Tromsø Taxi on +47 776 03 000. Call the port agent number in your daily programme if you will be late.

What to see

Common mistakes

Safety and scams

Tromsø is a safe, low-crime city and the centre is easy to walk by day and in the light summer nights. The main risks are weather and surfaces: ice and snow on pavements from autumn to spring, wind on Storsteinen, and fast changes in conditions at the top of the cable car. Wear shoes with grip in the cold months. In an emergency call 112 (police), 113 (ambulance) or 110 (fire). The University Hospital of North Norway (UNN) is about 0.5 km from Breivika.

Accessibility

Prostneset is in the centre, so Polaria, the Polar Museum and Storgata are close by. Polaria sells a reduced ticket for people with disabilities (260 kr in 2026) and companions with a companion card go free. Fjellheisen is not wheelchair accessible: Hurtigruten notes a long staircase at the top and no working lift. From Breivika, ask the ship about an accessible shuttle. In winter, ice and snow make the pavements hard going.

If it rains

Polaria (10:00–17:00) and the Polar Museum (10:00–18:00) are both indoors and a short walk from Prostneset. Ølhallen and the Mathallen food hall are good places to sit out the rain. The Arctic Cathedral is indoors too, but skip Fjellheisen in low cloud or wind.

Crowds

Prostneset takes most calls, and Hurtigruten and Havila coastal ships use it too, so Storgata and the harbour can be busy at any time of year. Fjellheisen is the bottleneck: go at 09:00 opening or late in the evening. In the midnight-sun season the evening cable car is popular, so expect queues on the way down. Fjellheisen was closed to visitors in April and May 2026. There is no tourist tax or cruise fee for passengers in 2026. Tromsø plans an overnight visitor fee from 1 January 2027, and the government has proposed a cruise fee of 100 kr per passenger per day from 2027 that municipalities can choose to introduce.

Questions cruise passengers ask

Is Tromsø cruise port walkable to the city centre?

From Prostneset, yes: it is in the centre. From Breivika, no: it is about 4.5 km out, so take bus 42, the shuttle or a taxi.

Is Tromsø a tender port?

No. Ships dock at Prostneset in the centre or, if longer than 230 m, at Breivika.

How do I get from Breivika cruise port to Tromsø centre?

Use the underpass to the stop across Stakkevollvegen and take bus 42 towards Eidkjosen. Pay by card on board or in the Svipper app; no cash.

How much is the Fjellheisen cable car in 2026?

645 kr return and 415 kr one way for adults; 310 kr return for children aged 3–15. The Tromsø Pass – Cruise adds the Arctic Cathedral for 662 kr in total.

How do I get to the Arctic Cathedral from the cruise port?

Take bus 20, 24, 26 or 28 from the centre; the stop is by the cathedral. On foot it is about 20 minutes across the Tromsø Bridge.

Can I see the northern lights or midnight sun from a cruise in Tromsø?

Midnight sun runs from about 20 May to 22 July. The northern lights season is September to April, and sightings are never guaranteed.

What can I do in Tromsø in one day from a cruise ship?

Fjellheisen at opening, the Arctic Cathedral, then Polaria for the seal feeding, lunch on the quay and the Polar Museum. Everything except the first two is on foot from Prostneset.

Is there a tourist tax for cruise passengers in Tromsø?

Not in 2026. A national cruise fee of 100 kr per passenger per day has been proposed from 2027, and Tromsø plans an overnight visitor fee from 2027.
