Santa Cruz de Tenerife cruise port guide
Ships dock in Santa Cruz, either at Muelle de Ribera close to Plaza de España or at the longer Muelle Sur, where you may need the shuttle or a marked walking route. From the port gate the city centre is flat and walkable, and the tram reaches the old town of La Laguna in 30–40 minutes for €1.35. Be back at the ship at least 60 minutes before all-aboard, more if you go beyond La Laguna.
Santa Cruz is a working capital, not a resort, and the port opens straight onto its main square. The day splits three ways: stay in the flat city centre with its market and shopping streets, take the tram up to the UNESCO old town of La Laguna, or head for the beach at Las Teresitas. Mount Teide, the island's main draw, is about 90 minutes each way by road and the public bus does not fit a cruise day, so it is ship-tour territory. Which berth you get matters: Ribera is a short walk, Muelle Sur adds a shuttle or a longer walk.
When to head back to the ship
For a 17:30 all-aboard. Times count back from all-aboard using the travel times and buffers in this guide. Your ship's daily programme always wins. Re-time this to your own all-aboard.
| Leave from | Leave by | How |
|---|
| Plaza de España (Muelle Sur ship) | 16:00 (1 h 30 min before all-aboard) | Walk up to 30 min or port shuttle |
| Plaza de España (Ribera ship) | 16:15 (1 h 15 min before all-aboard) | Walk about 10 min |
| La Laguna old town (Trinidad) | 15:00 (2 h 30 min before all-aboard) | Tram Line 1, 30–40 min, then walk |
| Puerto de la Cruz / Loro Parque | 14:30 (3 h before all-aboard) | Bus 102, about 1 hour |
| Playa de Las Teresitas | 16:10 (1 h 20 min before all-aboard) | Bus 910, about 20 min |
Where people get Santa Cruz de Tenerife wrong: Trying to reach Mount Teide by public bus; the drive is about 90 minutes each way and the park bus does not fit a cruise day.
Docking and getting to town
- Muelle de Ribera, 0.8 km to the centre. The berth nearest Plaza de España. Most passengers walk out through the port gate; taxis wait near the gate.
- Muelle Sur (Sur AL), 2 km to the centre. Longer pier used by many large ships, with the cruise terminal and ferry terminals nearby. Port shuttles, a meeting point near the maritime station and the Puerto-Ciudad building handle access; walking routes are controlled. The berth is only confirmed close to arrival, so check your daily programme.
Walkable? Yes, about 25 min. From Ribera the walk to Plaza de España takes about 10 minutes; from the far end of Muelle Sur allow 25–30 minutes or use the shuttle. The city is flat with good pavements. The busy seafront road between the port and the square has to be crossed at signalled crossings.
Transport
- On foot: Free; 10–30 min to Plaza de España, depending on berth. Follow the signed route out of the port to Plaza de España. Calle del Castillo, the main pedestrian shopping street, starts just behind the square.
- Port shuttle (Muelle Sur): Usually free; check with your cruise line; A few minutes. Ships at the far end of Muelle Sur normally get a shuttle to the port gate area near Plaza de España. Arrangements vary by line and berth.
- Tram Line 1 to La Laguna (Metrotenerife): €1.35 single; about €1.05 from a Ten+ wallet (2026); 30–40 min Intercambiador to Trinidad (La Laguna). Board at the Intercambiador (main bus and tram interchange, about 20 minutes' walk along the seafront from Plaza de España) or at a central stop such as Fundación. No cash sales on board: buy at the ticket machine at the stop. Runs about every 5 minutes at peak and every 6–20 minutes off-peak. Trinidad is the stop for La Laguna's old town.
- TITSA bus 910 to Las Teresitas: Short urban fare; pay the driver in cash or by contactless bank card (2026); About 20 min. Runs from the Intercambiador and stops on the road in front of the port. Roughly every 10–20 minutes; extra services added in summer 2026. Allow extra time for the return, as buses fill in the afternoon.
- TITSA bus 102 to Puerto de la Cruz (for Loro Parque): €5.25 cash, about €3.45 with Ten+ (2026); About 1 hour. From the Intercambiador via La Laguna, every 20–40 minutes. In Puerto de la Cruz the free Loro Parque Express train runs from Plaza de los Reyes Católicos.
- Taxi: Metered in the city (2026); A few minutes to the centre. Taxis wait at the port gate and at ranks in town. In the city they run on the meter. For island tours, agree the total price first and confirm whether it is per car or per person.
Return timing
Be back at the ship by 16:30 for a 17:30 all-aboard. Leave Plaza de España by 16:00 if your ship is on Muelle Sur, by 16:15 from Ribera. Leave La Laguna by 15:00 on the tram. The walk from the square to a Muelle Sur berth takes up to 30 minutes, and the shuttle can queue at the end of the day. The tram from La Laguna takes 30–40 minutes, plus about 20 minutes' walk from the Intercambiador to the port. From Puerto de la Cruz the bus takes about an hour, so leave there by 14:30 at the latest.
If you are running late: Take a taxi from any rank; the run from La Laguna to the port is about 20 minutes by road outside rush hour. If you will miss all-aboard, call the port agent number on your daily programme immediately.

Cost: Free. Use it as your meeting point and leave-by point; it is the gateway between the port and town.
- San Cristóbal de La Laguna: UNESCO-listed old town with a colonial street grid, 30–40 minutes up the hill by tram. Time: 3–4 hours including the tram. Cost: Tram €1.35 each way (2026). It is higher and often cooler and cloudier than Santa Cruz. Bring a layer.

- Auditorio de Tenerife: Santiago Calatrava's concert hall on the seafront, next to the small Castillo Negro. Time: 30 minutes from outside. Cost: Free to view from outside. Combine with the walk to the Intercambiador; it is on the same stretch of seafront.
- Museo de la Naturaleza y Arqueología (MUNA): The island's natural history and Guanche culture, including Guanche mummies. Time: 1–1.5 hours. Cost: Standard ticket; check the Museos de Tenerife site. A good rainy-day option. The mummy room may upset young children. Closed on Carnival Tuesday.

Beaches
- Playa de Las Teresitas: TITSA bus 910 from the stop in front of the port or the Intercambiador About 20 min by bus Long, calm beach protected by a breakwater, next to the fishing village of San Andrés. The best beach option from the port.
- Parque Marítimo César Manrique: Walk or taxi south along the seafront past the Auditorio Short taxi ride Saltwater pool complex on the waterfront rather than a beach.
- Costa Adeje and Los Cristianos: TITSA buses 110/111 towards the south 1–1.5 hours by bus Too far for most cruise calls. Choose Las Teresitas instead.
Common mistakes
- Trying to see Mount Teide by public bus. The park bus leaves from Puerto de la Cruz once in the morning and the drive is about 90 minutes each way. Book the ship's tour or a private tour.
- Assuming the ship is next to Plaza de España. Check whether you are at Ribera or Muelle Sur. From the far end of Muelle Sur allow 30 minutes on foot or use the shuttle.
- Trying to pay cash on the tram. Buy a ticket at the machine at the stop, or load a Ten+ card. There are no sales on board.
- Going to the southern resorts for a beach. Las Teresitas is 20 minutes by bus 910. The south is 1–1.5 hours each way.
- Starting a taxi tour without fixing the price. Agree the total fare, the duration and whether it is per car or per person before you set off.
Safety and scams
Santa Cruz is a safe, ordinary Spanish city. Watch for pickpockets in crowds on Calle del Castillo and at the market, and on the tram at busy times. The seafront road by the port is fast and wide; cross only at signals. La Laguna and Teide are cooler than the coast, and the sun is strong all year at this latitude, so carry water, sunscreen and a layer.
- Taxi tour prices that turn out to be per person: before agreeing an island tour, confirm in writing whether the quote is per car or per person.
- Taxi tours priced vaguely: before a longer trip, agree the total fare and duration in advance rather than relying on an estimate.
- Poor exchange rates at hotels and some exchange counters: use a bank ATM on the seafront or main shopping streets, or pay by card.
Accessibility
Santa Cruz is flat and generally wheelchair-friendly, with wide pavements around Plaza de España and Calle del Castillo. The main barrier is distance: from a far Muelle Sur berth, ask the ship whether the port shuttle can take a wheelchair. La Laguna's old town is level and largely pedestrianised. The ship docks, so there is no tender transfer.
If it rains
Rain is more likely in La Laguna and the north than in Santa Cruz. Stay in the city and spend time in MUNA, the covered Mercado de Nuestra Señora de África, the TEA modern art centre and the shopping streets. Cloud can close or hide the Teide cable car, so check before committing to a Teide tour on a wet day.
Crowds
Santa Cruz is one of Spain's busiest cruise ports and several ships can call on the same day. Plaza de España, Calle del Castillo and the market fill first. Go to the market early and up to La Laguna mid-morning, then return to the city in the afternoon when tour groups head back. During Carnival in February the city centre is very busy and tram and bus services change.
