Stockholm cruise port guide
Ships dock at Stadsgården (about 2 km from Gamla Stan, a 20–30 minute walk), Frihamnen (about 4 km out; take SL bus 1 or a taxi) or, for larger ships, at Nynäshamn, 60 km south, where commuter train line 43 reaches Stockholm City in about 60 minutes for 43 kr (2026). From Nynäshamn, catch a train back no later than 3 hours before all-aboard.
Your berth decides the day. Stadsgården sits on the Södermalm waterfront, a flat walk from Slussen and Gamla Stan, with Fotografiska next door. Frihamnen, the main terminal for large ships and turnarounds, is in the eastern docks and needs a bus or taxi. The biggest ships go to Nynäshamn, an hour south by train, which cuts the city day short. Stockholm is built on islands, so the Djurgården ferry is both transport and sightseeing: it links Slussen with the Vasa Museum and Skansen. Sweden is close to cashless; bring a contactless card.
When to head back to the ship
For a 17:30 all-aboard. Times count back from all-aboard using the travel times and buffers in this guide. Your ship's daily programme always wins. Re-time this to your own all-aboard.
| Leave from | Leave by | How |
|---|
| Gamla Stan (Stadsgården berth) | 16:15 (1 h 15 min before all-aboard) | Walk along the water, 20–30 min |
| City centre (Frihamnen berth) | 16:00 (1 h 30 min before all-aboard) | Bus 1 or taxi |
| Stockholm City (Nynäshamn berth) | 14:30 (3 h before all-aboard) | Commuter train 43, about 60 min, then walk |
| Vasa Museum (Stadsgården berth) | 15:55 (1 h 35 min before all-aboard) | Ferry to Slussen, walk 20–30 min |
Where people get Stockholm wrong: Underestimating Nynäshamn: it is 60 km from Stockholm and needs a train back at least 3 hours before all-aboard.
Docking and getting to town
Stockholm city berths are alongside. At Nynäshamn most large ships use the Seawalk floating pier; on busy days with several ships, some anchor and tender passengers to the guest harbour (Gästhamnen), about 600 m from the railway station. MSC notes that its ships may tender in this port.
- Stadsgården (Södermalm), 2 km to the centre. On the Södermalm waterfront, about 2 km from Gamla Stan: 20–30 minutes on foot, flat, along the water to Slussen. Fotografiska is beside the quay. Used by large cruise ships and listed by MSC as a secondary Stockholm terminal.
- Frihamnen, 4 km to the centre. Stockholm's largest cruise terminal, used by big ships and turnarounds, in the eastern docks about 4 km from Gamla Stan. Too far to walk comfortably. SL bus 1 starts at Frihamnen and runs to Stureplan, Hötorget and Cityterminalen. A taxi to Gamla Stan takes about 10–15 minutes.
- Skeppsbron (Gamla Stan), 0 km to the centre. On the Gamla Stan waterfront, for smaller ships only. The old town starts at the quay.
- Nynäshamn (Seawalk pier), 60 km to the centre. About 60 km south of Stockholm, used by ships too large for the city berths (21 calls scheduled in 2026). The Seawalk is about 1.3 km (15–20 minutes) from Nynäshamn station; follow the green line painted on the pavement. Commuter train line 43 runs to Stockholm City in about 60 minutes.
Walkable? Partly, about 25 min. From Stadsgården: walk west along the water to Slussen and over to Gamla Stan, about 2 km and 20–30 minutes, all flat. From Skeppsbron you are already in the old town. From Frihamnen (about 4 km) take bus 1 or a taxi. From Nynäshamn, walk 15–20 minutes to the station and take the train.
Transport
- SL single ticket or contactless tap: 43 kr, valid 75 minutes with transfers (2026); —. One fare for all SL metro, buses, commuter trains and the Djurgården ferry; there are no zones, so it also covers Nynäshamn. Tap a contactless card or phone at the metro gates or platform readers, or buy in the SL app. SL kept its 2025 prices for 2026.
- SL 24-hour or 72-hour ticket: 24 hours 180 kr; 72 hours 360 kr (2026); —. Worth it if you will make five or more trips, for example a ferry to Djurgården plus buses or the Nynäshamn train. Buy in the SL app. Under-7s travel free with a paying adult.
- Bus 1 (from Frihamnen): 43 kr single (2026); About 15–20 min to Stureplan. Bus 1 starts at Frihamnen and runs via Stureplan, Hötorget and Cityterminalen (by Central Station) to Kungsholmen. From Stureplan it is about 15 minutes' walk to Gamla Stan, or change to the metro. Check the SL app for the day's timetable.
- Commuter train line 43 (from Nynäshamn): 43 kr single (2026); About 60 min to Stockholm City. Walk 15–20 minutes from the Seawalk to Nynäshamn station, or 7–8 minutes from the tender landing. Tap your card at the platform reader before boarding. Trains run about every 30 minutes. The line has single-track sections and delays happen, so leave a wide margin for the return.
- Djurgården ferry (line 82): 43 kr on an SL ticket (2026); A few minutes from Slussen to Djurgården. SL ferry from Slussen via Skeppsholmen to Djurgården, for the Vasa Museum and Skansen. Valid with SL tickets.
- Taxi: Varies by company; check the price label; 10–15 min Frihamnen to Gamla Stan. Stockholm taxi firms set their own fares. Every taxi must show a yellow comparison-price label on the rear side window; check it before you get in. Pay by card.
Return timing
Stadsgården: leave Gamla Stan 75 minutes before all-aboard (by 16:15 for 17:30) to be on board 45 minutes early. Frihamnen: leave the centre 90 minutes before. Nynäshamn: board a train at Stockholm City no later than 3 hours before all-aboard (by 14:30 for 17:30). The walk from Gamla Stan to Stadsgården is 20–30 minutes. The Nynäshamn trip is about 60 minutes by train plus 15–20 minutes on foot, and the line is prone to delays, so allow a 90-minute margin on top.
If you are running late: In the city, take a taxi to the terminal; check the price label first. From Stockholm to Nynäshamn by road is at least 45 minutes. If you will be late, call the port agent number printed in your daily programme.
A day in Stockholm (all-aboard 17:30)

What to see
- Gamla Stan: Stockholm's medieval old town on its own island: narrow lanes, Stortorget square and the cathedral. Time: 1–1.5 hours. Cost: Free to walk. Go early. The main lane, Västerlånggatan, fills with groups by late morning; the side lanes stay quieter.
- Royal Palace (Kungliga slottet): The official palace of the Swedish monarch, with the Royal Apartments, the Treasury and Museum Three Crowns. Time: 1–1.5 hours. Cost: Charged; check kungligaslotten.se for the 2026 price. Open 10:00–17:00 May–September and 10:00–16:00 the rest of the year (2026). Parts can close at short notice for official receptions. The changing of the guard in the outer courtyard is free to watch.
- Vasa Museum: The 17th-century warship that sank on her maiden voyage in 1628, raised almost intact in 1961. Time: 1.5 hours. Cost: 240 kr May–September, 195 kr October–April; under-18s free (2026). Open 08:30–18:00 June–August; 10:00–17:00 September–May, Wednesdays to 20:00. A guided tour of about 25 minutes is included. The museum is cash-free.
- Djurgården ferry: A short crossing from Slussen with views of Gamla Stan, Skeppsholmen and the harbour, for the price of a bus fare. Time: 15–20 minutes. Cost: 43 kr on an SL ticket (2026). Use it as transport to the Vasa Museum and Skansen rather than paying for a sightseeing boat.
- Skansen: The open-air museum on Djurgården: historic buildings moved from across Sweden, plus Nordic animals. Time: 2 hours. Cost: Varies by season and is cheaper online; children 0–15 free (2026). Autumn hours are short: from 28 September 2026 to 10 January 2027, weekdays 10:00–15:00 and weekends 10:00–16:00. Check skansen.se for the price on your date.
- Fotografiska: A large photography museum in a former customs building on the Stadsgården waterfront, with a top-floor café looking over the harbour. Time: 1–1.5 hours. Cost: 195 kr adults, 135 kr students, under-13s free (2026). Open daily 10:00–23:00. It is next to the Stadsgården berth, so it works well as the last stop of the day.
- Fjällgatan viewpoint: A street on the Södermalm cliffs above Stadsgården with one of the best views over Gamla Stan and the harbour. Time: 20–30 minutes. Cost: Free. Ship coach tours stop here. From Stadsgården it is a short but steep climb.
Common mistakes
- Bringing cash. Sweden is close to cashless. Museums such as the Vasa are cash-free and SL takes cards and the app. A contactless card or phone covers the day.
- Under-estimating Nynäshamn. It is 60 km from Stockholm. Allow about 80 minutes each way door to door, and take a train back no later than 3 hours before all-aboard.
- Trying to walk from Frihamnen. It is about 4 km of dockland roads. Take bus 1 from the terminal or a taxi.
- Getting into a taxi without checking the price. Fares are set by each company. Read the yellow comparison-price label on the rear window before you get in, or use a large firm.
- Planning a long Skansen visit on an autumn call. From late September Skansen closes at 15:00 on weekdays. Visit in the morning or choose the Vasa Museum instead.
- Buying several single tickets. At 43 kr a ride, a 24-hour ticket (180 kr) pays for itself after five trips, including ferries.
Safety and scams
Stockholm is a safe city for visitors by day. Pickpockets work in crowded places: Gamla Stan's main lanes, T-Centralen and Central Station, and busy ferries and metro trains. Keep bags closed and phones out of back pockets. In an emergency call 112.
- Pickpocketing in Gamla Stan, around T-Centralen and on crowded trains. Keep valuables zipped away and in front of you.
- Taxis charging far more than expected. Companies set their own fares; check the yellow comparison-price label on the rear window before you get in.
- Card terminals or cash machines offering to charge you in your home currency. Choose kronor (SEK); the conversion rate offered is usually poor.
Accessibility
The waterfront walk from Stadsgården to Slussen is flat. Gamla Stan has cobbles and some steep lanes, which are hard going in a wheelchair. Fjällgatan is reached by a steep climb. From Nynäshamn, the 1.3 km walk to the station is level, but a taxi to the station is an option. At Nynäshamn, ships that anchor use tenders, which may not suit passengers with reduced mobility.
If it rains
The Vasa Museum, Fotografiska and the Royal Palace are all indoors and close to each other by ferry or on foot. Östermalms Saluhall is a dry place for lunch. The Djurgården ferry has a covered cabin.
Crowds
Ports of Stockholm expected 157 cruise calls and over 300,000 passengers in 2026, with calls now spread across the whole year. Gamla Stan and the Vasa Museum are busiest from late morning to mid-afternoon; arrive at the Vasa early or late. Ship coach tours stop at Fjällgatan, so the viewpoint is busiest mid-morning.
