Charlotte Amalie cruise port guide
Ships dock at Havensight (the West Indian Company Dock), 1.7 miles east of downtown Charlotte Amalie, or at Crown Bay, 2 miles west. From Havensight you can walk the shoreline pavement to town or take a shared taxi for 5–10 minutes; from Crown Bay take a taxi. Taxis charge per person, so agree the fare first, and be back on board 60 minutes before all-aboard.
St Thomas is a docking port with two piers, and which one you get changes the day. Havensight is the busier dock, beside Havensight Mall and the Skyride, with a long but manageable shoreline walk into Charlotte Amalie. Crown Bay, where the largest ships berth, is quieter and closer to Frenchtown, but the walk to town has stretches with no pavement. Most visitors split the day between the Danish-era downtown and a beach, usually Magens Bay. Taxis are shared open-air 'safari' vans that charge per person, and traffic drives on the left.
When to head back to the ship
For a 17:30 all-aboard. Times count back from all-aboard using the travel times and buffers in this guide. Your ship's daily programme always wins. Re-time this to your own all-aboard.
| Leave from | Leave by | How |
|---|
| Downtown Charlotte Amalie | 15:55 (1 h 35 min before all-aboard) | Walk the shoreline to Havensight, about 35 min |
| Magens Bay | 16:00 (1 h 30 min before all-aboard) | Shared taxi, 15–20 min |
| Coral World / Coki Beach | 15:30 (2 h before all-aboard) | Taxi, 20–25 min |
| Cruz Bay, St John | 14:30 (3 h before all-aboard) | Hourly ferry to Red Hook, then taxi |
| Skyride (Havensight) | 16:15 (1 h 15 min before all-aboard) | Walk to the ship, 10–15 min |
Where people get Charlotte Amalie wrong: Leaving St John too late: the hourly Red Hook ferry plus a taxi across St Thomas makes the return long.
Docking and getting to town
- Havensight (West Indian Company Dock, WICO), 2.7 km to the centre. The main cruise dock, with three berths on one pier. Havensight Mall, restaurants and a post office are a few minutes' walk from the ships, and the Skyride to Paradise Point is across the street from the mall. Taxis wait at the dock gates. Dredging of the channel and turning basin is planned from September 2026 to mid-2027.
- Crown Bay (Austin 'Babe' Monsanto Marine Terminal), 3.2 km to the centre. Run by the Virgin Islands Port Authority, on the west side of the harbour, near Frenchtown. Oasis-class ships berth here. A small shopping centre and welcome centre sit beyond the gates, and taxis gather in a designated area. Fewer taxis serve Crown Bay than Havensight.
Walkable? Partly, about 35 min. From Havensight, leave by the security gate, turn left and follow the pavement beside the fence, through the Yacht Haven Grande marina, then along the shore into town: about 1.7 miles (2.7 km), flat and long, with little shade. From Crown Bay the walk is about 2 miles and parts of the route have no pavement; take a taxi. Downtown itself is walkable, but north of Main Street the streets climb steeply and pavements are narrow or missing.
Transport
- Walk (Havensight only): Free; About 35 min to downtown (1.7 miles). Left out of the gate, through Yacht Haven Grande and along the shoreline pavement. Go in the morning, when it is cooler. Not recommended from Crown Bay.
- Taxi (shared 'safari' or van): Per person, set by the VI Taxicab Commission. Magens Bay about $10–15 each way (2025); Coral World $20 each (2+ people, 2026); Crown Bay to the Skyride about $8 each way (2026); 5–10 min to downtown; 15–20 min to Magens Bay; 20–25 min to Coral World. Most taxis are open-air safari vans that wait to fill up and may pick up others on the way. Fares are per person, not per car. Licensed taxis have a dome light and 'TP' on the plate; unmarked cars are not licensed. Confirm the fare before you get in. Complaints: VI Taxicab Commission, 340-693-4211.
- VITRAN public bus: $2 exact change (2026); Varies. Buses marked 'Red Hook' pass near Coral World, about 10 minutes' walk from the stop. Coral World itself calls the service unreliable from the cruise docks; do not rely on it for the return.
- Ferry to St John (from Red Hook): $8.15 one way for non-residents, child $1, luggage $4 per item (2026); About 20 min crossing, hourly. Public ferry from Red Hook on the east end to Cruz Bay, St John, roughly hourly through the day. You first need a taxi across the island to Red Hook. A separate Inter Island Boat Services ferry runs from Crown Bay to Cruz Bay ($20 adult one way, 2026) but only a few times a day, with the last return from Cruz Bay at 16:15, too late for most ships.
- Rental car: —; —. Traffic drives on the left. Roads are narrow, steep and winding, and the speed limit is 20 mph in town. For a single port day, taxis are simpler.
Return timing
Be back on board 60 minutes before all-aboard. Leave Magens Bay 90 minutes before all-aboard, Coral World and Coki Beach 2 hours before, and be on a ferry leaving Cruz Bay, St John, at least 3 hours before. Downtown is 5–10 minutes from Havensight by taxi or about 35 minutes on foot. Magens Bay is 15–20 minutes by taxi, but safari vans wait to fill before leaving. Coral World is 20–25 minutes away. From St John you need the hourly ferry (20 minutes) and then a taxi across the island from Red Hook. If your ship is at Crown Bay, add time: fewer taxis wait there.
If you are running late: Ask any licensed taxi (dome light, 'TP' plate) for 'Havensight' or 'Crown Bay' and confirm which dock your ship is at before you leave it. If you will be late, call the port agent number on your daily programme.

- 99 Steps and Blackbeard's Castle: An 18th-century Danish staircase of ship-ballast bricks leading up to Skytsborg Tower, a 17th-century watchtower. Time: 45 minutes. Cost: Free to climb the steps. Steep and hot. There is no evidence Blackbeard ever lived there.
- Main Street and Vendors Plaza: The duty-free shopping streets and old warehouse alleys of the historic centre. Time: 1 hour. Cost: Free to browse. US residents can bring back $1,600 of goods duty-free from the USVI, including up to five litres of alcohol under the rules.

Free parking for visitors.
- Mountain Top and Drake's Seat: Hilltop viewpoints: Mountain Top, about 1,200 feet up, looks over the British Virgin Islands; Drake's Seat overlooks Magens Bay. Time: 2 hours by taxi tour. Cost: Agree a set taxi-tour fee. Mountain Top claims to be the home of the banana daiquiri.
- St John (by ferry from Red Hook): The neighbouring island, mostly national park, with beaches such as Trunk Bay and Cinnamon Bay. Time: A full day. Cost: Ferry $8.15 each way for non-residents (2026), plus taxis on both islands. Only with an early dock and a late all-aboard. A ship tour is the safer choice.
Beaches
- Magens Bay: Shared taxi from either dock. 15–20 min by taxi Lifeguards, toilets, showers, bar and grill, rentals.
- Coki Beach: Taxi to Coral World; the beach is next door. 20–25 min by taxi Good snorkelling close to shore.
- Sapphire Beach: Taxi to the east end. Taxi across the island; agree time and fare with the driver Faces Pillsbury Sound and St John.
Common mistakes
- Assuming the quoted taxi fare is for the whole group. Fares are per person. Confirm the price per head and the destination before you get in.
- Walking from Crown Bay to town. Parts of the route have no pavement. Take a taxi from Crown Bay.
- Not noting which dock the ship is at. St Thomas has two cruise docks. Check your daily programme and tell the driver 'Havensight' or 'Crown Bay'.
- Leaving St John too late. The Red Hook ferry is hourly and then you need a taxi across St Thomas. Be on a ferry from Cruz Bay at least 3 hours before all-aboard, or take a ship tour.
- Waiting until the last minute for a taxi at Magens Bay. Safari vans wait to fill up. Start back 90 minutes before all-aboard.
- Getting in an unmarked car. Licensed taxis have a dome light and 'TP' on the plate; unmarked cars can charge unapproved rates.
Safety and scams
The US Virgin Islands are a US territory and use US emergency services. In the cruise areas of Charlotte Amalie and at the main beaches, daytime is busy and the usual risks are petty theft and unsafe roads. Keep valuables out of sight, do not leave bags on the sand while you swim, and avoid quiet back streets and the hills above town after dark. Roads are steep and narrow and traffic drives on the left; look right first when crossing. Hurricane season runs from June to November, when ship schedules can change at short notice.
- Unlicensed drivers offering rides at the dock gates. Use taxis with a dome light and 'TP' on the plate; the Port Authority warns unmarked taxis may charge unapproved rates.
- A fare quoted per person being presented as a group price, or the reverse. Ask 'per person?' and agree the total before you get in.
- Taxi tours that cut the agreed route or overrun your return time. Agree the stops, the fee and a firm drop-off time at the dock first.
Accessibility
Havensight's pier and the mall area are flat, and the shoreline route to town is level but long, with narrow sections by the fence. Crown Bay's route to town has stretches with no pavement. Downtown, Main Street is flat, but the streets to the north climb steeply and pavements are narrow or missing; the 99 Steps are stairs only. The Skyride needs about 36 steps. Safari taxis are open vans with a step up; ship tours on open-air buses often exclude wheelchairs and walkers, so ask the ship for adapted transport.
If it rains
Fort Christian's museum and the downtown shops are indoors. Showers in St Thomas are usually short. Hilltop views from the Skyride or Mountain Top are not worth it in low cloud.
Crowds
St Thomas expects about 362 ship calls and 1.2 million cruise passengers in the 2026/27 season. With three berths at Havensight and three at Crown Bay, six large ships can be in at once. Magens Bay and the downtown shops are busiest from late morning to mid-afternoon on multi-ship days; go to the beach early or after 14:00. Channel dredging at Havensight is planned from September 2026 to mid-2027.
