Basseterre cruise port guide
Ships dock at Port Zante, right on the waterfront of Basseterre, so you walk into town in about five minutes. Taxis have fixed government fares (for example US$12 for up to four people to Frigate Bay or South Friars Bay). Leave Brimstone Hill 1 hour 45 minutes before all-aboard and the beaches 1 hour 30 minutes before.
St Kitts is an easy port to handle on your own. The pier at Port Zante runs straight into downtown Basseterre, and The Circus, the town's small roundabout square, is a five-minute walk away. The island's big sight, Brimstone Hill Fortress, is a 30–35 minute drive up the west coast, and the calm Caribbean-side beaches are 10–30 minutes south. Taxis are not metered but run on a published fare schedule, so the day is mostly about agreeing the price and currency before you get in. A ferry to Nevis is possible on a long call, but it is the riskiest choice here.
When to head back to the ship
For a 17:30 all-aboard. Times count back from all-aboard using the travel times and buffers in this guide. Your ship's daily programme always wins. Re-time this to your own all-aboard.

Where people get Basseterre wrong: Paying a beach taxi in full with no pick-up arranged, then finding no empty taxis to get back to Port Zante.
Docking and getting to town
- Port Zante cruise pier, 0.4 km to the centre. Ships dock and walk off into the Port Zante shopping area, which leads directly into downtown Basseterre. A second cruise pier opened in 2019. The taxi dispatch point is at the port exit. A new terminal building has been under construction since July 2026 for home-porting from November 2027; cruise calls continue during the work, but taxi staging and walking routes may shift.
Walkable? Yes, about 5 min. Flat walk from the pier through the Port Zante shopping area to The Circus, about five minutes. Independence Square and the main streets are 5–10 minutes away. Everything beyond town (Brimstone Hill, the beaches, Romney Manor) needs a taxi or tour.
Transport
- On foot: Free; About 5 min to The Circus. Walk off the pier through the Port Zante shopping area and straight into town. Pavements are narrow on some streets; watch for traffic, which drives on the left.
- Taxi (government fare schedule): Basseterre to Frigate Bay or South Friars Bay US$12 / EC$32 for 1–4 people; Cockleshell Bay US$22 / EC$59; Brimstone Hill only, max 2 hours, US$55 / EC$149; full island tour 4–4.5 hours US$100 / EC$270 (gazetted 2021 rates, still the published schedule); 10–15 min to Frigate Bay or South Friars Bay; 25–30 min to Cockleshell; 30–35 min to Brimstone Hill. Taxis wait at the dispatch point at the port exit. There are no meters. Groups of five or more pay per person (US$3 to Frigate Bay). Waiting time after the first 15 minutes costs US$5 per 15 minutes. Licensed taxis have yellow plates with T or TA. Agree the fare, and whether it is in US$ or EC$, before you set off. Book your pick-up time at the beach before you pay the driver, because empty taxis can be scarce at Cockleshell.
- Local minibus (H buses): EC$2.50 under 5 miles, EC$3.00 for 5–10 miles, EC$3.75 for longer trips, cash (2026); No timetable. Westbound buses leave from the area by the ferry terminal, eastbound and northbound ones from Baker's Corner. Buses do not serve Frigate Bay or the Southeast Peninsula beaches. With no fixed timetable and thin service on Sundays, they are a poor choice when you have a ship to catch.
- Passenger ferry to Nevis: EC$25–26 one way (about US$10), cash only at the terminal window (2026); 25–60 min depending on the boat. The Basseterre ferry terminal is a short walk from Port Zante. Departures run roughly hourly during the day. Buy tickets 20–30 minutes before sailing. Check times on the day; schedules change. Carry your ship card and photo ID for re-entry to the port.
Return timing
Be back on board 60 minutes before all-aboard. Leave Brimstone Hill by 15:45 and the south-coast beaches by 16:00 for a 17:30 all-aboard. From Nevis, be on a ferry leaving Charlestown by 14:30. From The Circus the walk back is about five minutes. Brimstone Hill is a 30–35 minute drive, Frigate Bay and South Friars Bay 10–15 minutes, Cockleshell 25–30 minutes. Security lines at the pier can be long when two or more ships are in. Nevis ferries take up to an hour and sail about hourly, so missing one can cost you an hour.
If you are running late: Ask any licensed taxi for Port Zante; the island is small and most of the south and west coast is within 35 minutes. If you will be late, call the port agent number on your daily programme straight away. Emergency services: 911.

- Cockleshell Bay: Taxi over the Southeast Peninsula road 25–30 min Faces Nevis. Reggae Beach Bar and Spice Mill are here. Arrange your return pick-up in advance; empty taxis are scarce.
Common mistakes
- Getting into a taxi without agreeing the fare and currency. Taxis are not metered. Check the published fare, then confirm per car or per person and US$ or EC$ before setting off.
- Paying the beach taxi in full and having no ride back. Agree a pick-up time with the driver first; empty taxis are scarce at Cockleshell and other quieter beaches.
- Using minibuses to get back for all-aboard. H buses have no timetable and do not serve the south-coast beaches. Use a licensed taxi for the return.
- Taking the last ferry back from Nevis. Ferries run about hourly and take up to an hour. Be on a boat by 14:30 for a 17:30 all-aboard, or book the ship's Nevis tour.
- Turning up for the Scenic Railway without a booking. It sells out on multi-ship days. Book through the ship or an agent before the day.
Safety and scams
Basseterre is generally fine for day visitors in daylight, but the UK government reports serious crime on the islands, so use normal care: do not carry large amounts of cash or flashy jewellery, and stay off quiet roads and beaches after dark. Use only licensed taxis (yellow plates with T or TA); unlicensed drivers often have no insurance for passengers. Currents can be strong and not every beach has lifeguards or warning flags, so swim where others swim. Traffic drives on the left.
- Monkey photo sellers in Basseterre: vendors offer photos with a vervet monkey and then ask for a lot more than expected. Agree the price first or decline firmly.
- Currency switch at the end of a taxi ride: some drivers quote a number and later say it was US$ rather than EC$, or per person rather than per car. Confirm both before you get in.
- Unlicensed taxis touting outside the port: use the dispatch point and check for the T or TA yellow plate.
Accessibility
Ships dock alongside, so there is no tender transfer. The route from the pier through Port Zante to The Circus is short and flat, though downtown pavements are narrow and kerbs high in places. Brimstone Hill involves steep paths and steps to reach the Citadel. Ask at the taxi dispatch point for a vehicle that suits a folded wheelchair; adapted taxis are not guaranteed.
If it rains
Showers are usually short. Stay in town and wait them out in the Port Zante shops or cafés around The Circus, or take a taxi tour, which is mostly by car. Brimstone Hill's paths and the Citadel are exposed, so go when the rain clears. Skip the Nevis ferry in rough weather.
Crowds
St Kitts passed one million cruise passengers by 20 August 2026, and two or more ships often share Port Zante in winter. On multi-ship days, shore tours to Brimstone Hill and the Scenic Railway sell out, the fortress fills by mid-morning and security lines at the pier are longer in the afternoon. Head to Brimstone Hill as soon as it opens at 09:30, take the beach in the afternoon and return to the ship early.
