Split cruise port guide
Most ships dock in Split's city port, either on the inner quays near the Riva (5–10 minutes' walk to Diocletian's Palace) or on the outer berths of the St Duje breakwater (15–20 minutes); some ships anchor and tender. You need no transport for the Old Town. Start walking back from the Riva 75 minutes before all-aboard if you are on the breakwater.
Split is a working city built into a Roman emperor's retirement palace, and the cruise berths sit right beside it. The palace streets, Peristyle and gates are free and open all day, so a cruise day here costs very little unless you add the cellars, cathedral and bell tower. The question is less how to get to town than what to add: Marjan Hill and Bačvice beach are walkable, Trogir and Klis need a bus or taxi, and Krka needs a very long call. Ferries, catamarans and coaches share the same harbour, so the waterfront road is busy from early morning.
When to head back to the ship
For a 17:30 all-aboard. Times count back from all-aboard using the travel times and buffers in this guide. Your ship's daily programme always wins. Re-time this to your own all-aboard.
| Leave from | Leave by | How |
|---|
| Riva (ship on the breakwater) | 16:00 (1 h 30 min before all-aboard) | Walk round the harbour, 15–20 min |
| Riva (ship at the inner quays) | 16:15 (1 h 15 min before all-aboard) | Walk round the harbour, 5–10 min |
| Trogir | 14:30 (3 h before all-aboard) | Promet bus 40–60 min; be in Split by 15:30 |
Where people get Split wrong: Underestimating the 20-minute walk back to the breakwater berths plus gangway security.
Docking and getting to town
Split is mainly a docking port, but anchorage and tendering are permitted and some ships tender when berths are full. Tender landings are closer to the Old Town than the outer breakwater berths; your ship will confirm the landing point.
- Inner city-port quays (Riva end of the harbour), 0.5 km to the centre. Shared with ferries. 5–10 minutes' flat walk to the palace's Bronze Gate on the Riva.
- Outer berths, St Duje breakwater (Gat sv. Duje), 1.5 km to the centre. Two berths built for large ships (up to about 320 m and 265–270 m). 15–20 minutes' walk along the harbour road; some lines run a shuttle to the Riva.
Walkable? Yes, about 15 min. Flat and paved all the way round the harbour to the Riva. There is little shade on the breakwater and the harbour road is busy with ferry traffic and coaches. Allow 20 minutes from the far end of the breakwater.
Transport
- On foot: Free; 5–20 min to the Riva. Follow the harbour edge west to the Riva promenade; the Bronze Gate into the palace cellars is halfway along it.
- Ship shuttle (outer berths): Varies by line (2026); 5–10 min. Some ships on the breakwater run a shuttle to the Riva. Ask at the gangway rather than assuming.
- Promet bus to Trogir: €2.50 by app, ticket machine or office; €5 from the driver (2026); About 40–60 min depending on traffic. Trogir is in Promet's fourth price class. Buy through the Promet app or a ticket office to pay half the driver price.
- Promet city bus (zone 1): €1.50 by app or ticket office; €3 from the driver (2026); Varies. Useful for Marjan or Žnjan if you do not want to walk. Fares rose 50% on 1 June 2026.
- Taxi / Uber: Metered or app price (2026); Varies. A taxi rank serves the port. Uber operates in Split. A pre-booked car to Trogir takes about 35–40 minutes each way.
Return timing
Be back on board 60 minutes before all-aboard: leave the Riva by 16:00 for a 17:30 all-aboard if you are on the breakwater, by 16:15 from the inner quays. The walk back to the outer berths takes 15–20 minutes, plus security at the gangway. Ferry departures in the late afternoon can block the harbour road with queuing cars and foot passengers. If you go to Trogir, aim to be back in Split by 15:30, as coastal traffic towards Split builds in the afternoon.
If you are running late: From Trogir or Klis, take a taxi or Uber straight to your berth rather than waiting for a bus. If you will miss all-aboard, call the port agent number on your daily programme.

What to see
- Diocletian's Palace and the Peristyle: A Roman emperor's palace from around AD 300 that is still lived in, with the Peristyle as its central square. Time: 1.5–2 hours. Cost: Free (2026). The streets and all four gates are open 24 hours. Come before 09:30 or after 16:00 for space.
- Palace cellars (substructures): The vaulted halls under the palace, which preserve its original floor plan. Time: 45 minutes. Cost: €10 for the east and west halls; central corridor free (2026). Cool in summer, so save it for late morning.
- Cathedral of St Domnius and bell tower: Diocletian's mausoleum turned cathedral, with a 57 m Romanesque bell tower over the Peristyle. Time: 1 hour. Cost: Separate and combined tickets; combinations reported at about €7–15 (2026). Shoulders and knees covered. The tower stairs are steep and narrow near the top.
- Jupiter's Temple: Small Roman temple later used as a baptistery, with a carved coffered ceiling. Time: 15 minutes. Cost: €4, or part of some cathedral combinations (2026). Check whether your cathedral ticket already covers it.
- Riva promenade: The palm-lined waterfront along the palace's south wall. Time: 30 minutes. Cost: Free. Cafés here are pricier than in Varoš or around People's Square.
- Marjan Hill: Wooded park on the peninsula west of the centre, with steps up to viewpoints over the city and islands. Time: 1–2 hours. Cost: Free. The first viewpoint is about 15–20 minutes' climb up steps from Varoš. Take water.
- Trogir: Small walled UNESCO town on an islet 30 km west. Time: 3.5–4 hours including travel. Cost: Bus €2.50 each way by app (2026). Go in the morning; afternoon traffic back towards Split is slower.
- Klis Fortress: Hilltop fortress above Split with wide views; a Game of Thrones location. Time: 2.5–3 hours including travel. Buses are infrequent; a taxi or Uber is safer on a cruise day.
Beaches
- Bačvice: Walk east from the port and ferry terminal About 5–10 min from the port Shallow, sandy-pebble city beach. Busy and lively in summer; home of the local ball game picigin.
- Kasjuni: Taxi or bus towards the south side of Marjan Pebble cove below Marjan, quieter than Bačvice.
Common mistakes
- Paying for a palace 'entry' ticket. The palace streets, gates and Peristyle are free. Only the cellars, cathedral, bell tower and temple charge.
- Climbing the bell tower at midday. Go first thing; the stairs are narrow and queues build when groups arrive.
- Buying bus tickets from the driver. Use the Promet app or a ticket office: driver tickets cost double since June 2026.
- Trying Krka on a 7-hour call. Krka needs about 9–10 hours in port. Do Trogir or Klis instead.
- Underestimating the walk back to the breakwater. Allow 20 minutes plus gangway security. Leave the Riva 90 minutes before all-aboard.
Safety and scams
Split is safe for visitors. Watch for pickpockets in the crowded palace lanes, on the Riva and around the bus and ferry terminals. Polished limestone in the palace is slippery when wet. The harbour road carries ferry traffic and coaches, so use crossings. In summer, carry water and shade up between 12:00 and 15:00.
- Paid photos with costumed 'Roman soldiers' at the Peristyle: they expect money for a photo, so agree before you pose or decline.
- Fish priced per kilo: ask for the weight and total price before the fish is cooked.
- Paying double on the bus: drivers charge twice the app or ticket-office fare; this is legal but avoidable.
Accessibility
The route from the berths to the Riva is flat and paved. The Riva is level and smooth. Inside the palace, the Peristyle and main lanes are reachable step-free from the Riva side through the cellar corridor, though surfaces are uneven, and some gates have steps. The bell tower and Marjan viewpoints are stairs only. On tender days, ask the ship about wheelchair transfers.
If it rains
Spend the time in the palace cellars, the cathedral and Jupiter's Temple, then the covered fish market and the cafés around People's Square. The palace's limestone is very slippery in rain, so wear shoes with grip.
Crowds
Split receives over 260 cruise calls a year and also handles heavy ferry traffic to the islands, so the waterfront is busy whatever the cruise schedule. Tour groups pack the Peristyle and the cellar corridor from about 09:30 to 12:30. Do the bell tower first, then move outward to Varoš, Marjan or Bačvice while groups are in the palace. Late afternoon on the Riva is calmer than midday.
