Molde cruise port guide
Ships dock at Storkaia or Moldegård, about 100 m from the town centre, and the main square is a five-minute walk. The Varden viewpoint (407 m) is a 1.5-hour walk up the signed Green Corridor trail or about 10 minutes by car, and the Romsdal Museum lies on the way. Start back down from Varden at least 2 hours before you must be on board.
Molde is a small town on the Romsdalsfjord, known as the town of roses, and the cruise quay is in the centre. The reason to come is the view: from Varden, 407 m above the town, you look across the fjord to a panorama of 222 peaks. The rest of the day fits around it. The Romsdal Museum's open-air houses sit on the slope below Varden, the cathedral and the rose-planted town hall roof are a few minutes from the quay, and in summer a 10-minute boat crosses to Hjertøya and its fisheries museum. The Atlantic Road is about 45 minutes away by road, so it needs a tour or a hire car.

Where people get Molde wrong: Treating Varden as a quick stroll when it is 4.4 km and about 1.5 hours up.
Docking and getting to town
Ships normally dock at Storkaia or Moldegård. Anchoring with tenders is possible, about 500 m from the tender pier, if the quays are occupied.
- Storkaia, 0.1 km to the centre. The main cruise quay, 300 m long, with no ship-size limit. About 100 m from the town centre and a five-minute walk to the main square. No shuttle bus is needed or provided, and Cruise Norway lists no restrooms on the pier.
- Moldegård, 0.1 km to the centre. Second cruise quay, 130 m long, also in the centre.
Walkable? Yes, about 5 min. The town centre starts about 100 m from the quay and the main square (Torget) is about five minutes away. The cathedral and town hall are close by. The Romsdal Museum is about 10 minutes' walk from the centre, on the slope above. Varden is a real hike: 4.4 km and about 1.5 hours up the Green Corridor trail on asphalt, gravel and path, starting at the corner of Scandic Hotel Alexandra and marked with blue symbols.
Transport
- Walk: Free; 5 min to Torget; 10 min from the centre to the Romsdal Museum. Everything in town is walkable. Visit Northwest says the self-guided town walk from Torget past the cathedral, town hall and Romsdal Museum suits people with reduced mobility, except the optional climb to Varden.
- Green Corridor trail to Varden: Free; About 1.5 hours up, 45 minutes down. 4.4 km from the sea at Reknes, through Reknes Park, past Rekneshaugen viewpoint and the Romsdal Museum to Varden at 407 m. Follow the blue symbols from the corner of Scandic Hotel Alexandra; markers show the distance left. Graded easy to medium.
- Guided minibus to Varden (Gjerde Bussreiser): Price not published; contact the operator (+47 919 95 030); About 15 min each way, 20 min at the top. Leaves from the town centre, stops 20 minutes at Varden and drops you at the Romsdal Museum on the way back. From there it is about 10 minutes' walk to the centre, or you can stay on the bus.
- Taxi or car to Varden: No fixed fares; ask for the price before you set off; About 10 min by road. In summer you can drive to Varden in about 10 minutes. Useful for going up and walking down the trail.
- Hjertøya summer boat (Hjertøyruta): 50 kr adult, 25 kr child, 100 kr family (2026); About 10 min crossing. Summer only. Leaves from Reknesmoloen at the west end of Storgata, near the guest harbour. Operated by SeaFun (971 16 060); check departure times on seafun.no before planning around it.
- FRAM local bus: 50 kr adult single, 1 zone; 25 kr child 6–17 and over-67s; 20 kr surcharge for adults buying on board (2026); Varies. Few cruise visitors need the town buses. Bus 420 to Åndalsnes leaves from the Molde traffic terminal, crosses on the Sølsnes–Åfarnes ferry (included in the ticket) and connects with Rauma Railway trains; tickets in the FRAM or Entur app, or by card on board.
Return timing
Leave Varden on foot at least 2 hours before you must be on board, or 75 minutes before if you are driven down. From the town centre, start back 30 minutes before you must be on board. The walk down from Varden takes about 45 minutes, plus time at the museum or a café on the way. The quay is only about 100 m from the centre, so once you are in town the return is quick.
If you are running late: If you are late on Varden, call a taxi rather than walking down; the road takes about 10 minutes. Call the port agent number in your daily programme if you are delayed.

Common mistakes
- Treating Varden as a quick stroll. It is 4.4 km and about 1.5 hours up. If time is short, take a taxi up (about 10 minutes) and walk down in about 45 minutes.
- Expecting the Romsdal Museum's open-air houses to be open every day. They open with guides from 22 June to 16 August and on most cruise days. Check the museum's cruise page for your date.
- Trying to reach the Rauma Railway from Molde on your own. The line starts in Åndalsnes, a bus and ferry ride away. On a Molde call, take a ship excursion if you want the train.
- Going to Hjertøya with only a card. There is no electricity on the island, so the guide takes exact cash only. Buy the museum tour online in advance.
- Buying a FRAM bus ticket from the driver. Adults pay a 20 kr surcharge on board. Use the FRAM or Entur app.
Safety and scams
Molde is a small, quiet town with low crime. The practical risks are on the hill: the trail to Varden mixes asphalt, gravel and path and can be slippery after rain, and the weather on the top changes faster than in town. Wear proper shoes and carry a layer. In an emergency call 112 (police), 113 (ambulance) or 110 (fire).
- Taxis with no agreed fare: there are no fixed fares to Varden or the Atlantic Road. Ask for the price before you set off.
- Paying the on-board surcharge on FRAM buses: adults pay 20 kr more for a single bought on board. Use the FRAM or Entur app.
- Booking Atlantic Road tours from unofficial sellers at the quay. Use the operators listed by Visit Northwest or your ship, so you know the return time is fixed.
Accessibility
The quay is about 100 m from the flat town centre, and Visit Northwest describes the town walk past the cathedral, town hall and Romsdal Museum as suitable for people with reduced mobility. The climb to Varden is not; go by taxi or the local minibus, which drives to the top and stops at the Romsdal Museum on the way back. Cruise Norway lists no restrooms in the pier area. Hjertøya has no electricity and is reached by a small boat, so it is difficult for wheelchair users.
If it rains
Krona, the Romsdal Museum's main building, has permanent and temporary exhibitions, a café and a shop. Molde Cathedral is close to the quay. Skip Varden in low cloud, since the panorama is the whole point. The open-air museum works in light rain but not in a downpour.
Crowds
There is no daily cruise cap in Molde and no cruise passenger fee in 2026: the government has proposed an optional municipal cruise fee of 100 kr per passenger per day from 1 January 2027. The Varden trail and the viewpoint are busiest when ship tours arrive, so walk up straight after docking. On cruise days the Romsdal Museum usually opens its houses with guides, and hours can change, so check its cruise page. During Moldejazz (13–19 July 2026) the town is busy and the museum moves some activities to the old town street, Bygata.
