Messina cruise port guide
Ships dock right at the city centre: Piazza del Duomo is 5–10 minutes on foot and Messina Centrale station just under 700 m. Taormina is 39–76 minutes away by regional train (€5.50 one way, 2026) plus a local bus up the hill, or by Interbus coach (€4.30). Be back on board 90 minutes before all-aboard if you go to Taormina, 60 if you stay in Messina.
Messina is one of the easiest Sicilian ports to step off: the quays line the city's main waterfront road and the cathedral square is a few minutes away. Most passengers leave for Taormina, and the timing of that trip shapes the day, because trains back from Taormina are uneven around midday. Those who stay get the noon show of the astronomical clock on the cathedral bell tower and the view across the Strait to Calabria. In 2026 the port is a building site, with a new cruise terminal under construction on the Colapesce quay.
When to head back to the ship
For a 17:30 all-aboard. Times count back from all-aboard using the travel times and buffers in this guide. Your ship's daily programme always wins. Re-time this to your own all-aboard.
| Leave from | Leave by | How |
|---|
| Piazza del Duomo | 16:20 (1 h 10 min before all-aboard) | Walk, 5–10 min |
| Taormina (upper town) | 14:30 (3 h before all-aboard) | Local bus, train up to 76 min, then walk |
| Sacrario di Cristo Re | 16:00 (1 h 30 min before all-aboard) | Walk down 15–20 min, then 10 min to the quay |
Where people get Messina wrong: Assuming trains back from Taormina run every half hour, when there are gaps of 90 minutes or more around midday.
Docking and getting to town
- Messina cruise quays (Marconi, I Settembre, Colapesce, Vespri). The cruise area runs along Via Vittorio Emanuele II, with the existing passenger terminal on the I Settembre quay. Works began in 2026 on a new terminal on the Colapesce quay, built and run by an MSC-controlled company, and ships due at I Settembre have been moved to the Marconi quay during the works. Taxis pick up on Via Vittorio Emanuele II at Largo Minutoli while the works last. Check your daily programme for the berth.
Walkable? Yes, about 10 min. Flat walk from the quays to Piazza del Duomo, 5–10 minutes depending on the berth. Messina Centrale station is just under 700 m from the port, about 10 minutes. The Sacrario di Cristo Re is the only central sight up a hill, a 15–20 minute climb from the centre.
Transport
- Walk: Free; 5–10 min to Piazza del Duomo; about 10 min to Messina Centrale. All of central Messina is on foot from the ship.
- Regional train to Taormina-Giardini (Trenitalia): €5.50 one way regional; €8.50–10 Intercity (2026); 39–76 min regional, most 45–65; Intercity about 34 min. From Messina Centrale. About 22 direct trains a day, one or two an hour but unevenly spaced. Digital tickets lock to the train at departure and cannot be changed after. Taormina-Giardini station is at sea level and the town is about 200 m higher, so do not walk up. The 'Taormina Link' ticket adds the ASM local bus from the station for €2, €7.50 in total each way (2026).
- Interbus coach IN09 to Taormina: €4.30 one way; €6.80 return (2026); 50 min on fast runs; 1h15–1h45 on others. Leaves from Piazza della Repubblica, in front of Messina Centrale, and arrives at the Taormina bus terminal on Via Pirandello, in the upper town, so there is no climb. On a sample August 2026 weekday there were eight departures from Messina and the last useful afternoon return reached Messina at 17:20. Fewer runs than the train; check booking.interbus.it.
- Taxi or private transfer: Private transfers to Taormina from €144 per vehicle for up to 3 people (2026); 45–55 min to Taormina. Taxi rank on Via Vittorio Emanuele II at Largo Minutoli during the port works. Agree any fare before you set off.
Return timing
In Messina, be walking back 70 minutes before all-aboard. From Taormina, leave the upper town at least 3 hours before all-aboard. From the Duomo the ship is 5–10 minutes away and it expects you 60 minutes before all-aboard. From Taormina, the bus down to the station, a train of up to 76 minutes and the walk from Messina Centrale add up, and the ship wants you back 90 minutes early on a train-dependent trip. On the August 2026 timetable nothing left Taormina-Giardini for Messina between 09:30 and 11:03, and after the 12:16 Intercity the next train was at 13:52. Pick the train before your last workable one.
If you are running late: If a train is cancelled, check the Interbus IN09 return from the Taormina bus terminal. Call the port agent number in your daily programme as soon as you know you will be late. A car from Taormina takes 45–55 minutes.
A day in Messina (all-aboard 17:30)
Assumes docking at 08:00 and a Taormina day. This plan misses the noon clock show; if you stay in Messina instead, be in Piazza del Duomo by 11:50.
- 08:15 Walk to Messina Centrale, about 10 minutes, and buy a Taormina Link ticket in the Trenitalia app.
- 08:45 Regional train to Taormina-Giardini (39–76 minutes; check the exact departure in the app).
- 10:00 ASM local bus from the station up to Taormina.
- 10:20 Teatro Antico (€12, 2026). Allow an hour; the view takes in Etna and the coast.
- 11:30 Walk Corso Umberto to Piazza IX Aprile and the Villa Comunale gardens.
- 12:30 Light lunch in town, then take the local bus down to the station.
- 13:50 Train back to Messina Centrale. Check the exact time in the app before leaving the ship; aim for a train that gets you in before 15:00.
- 15:00 Walk back past Piazza del Duomo for a look at the clock tower and the Orion Fountain.
- 16:00 On board, 90 minutes before all-aboard.
What to see
- Messina Cathedral and the astronomical clock: Norman cathedral rebuilt after the 1908 earthquake; its bell tower carries a mechanical astronomical clock built in 1933 by Ungerer of Strasbourg. Time: 45 minutes including the noon show. Cost: Cathedral free; the show is watched from the public square. The show starts at 12:00 every day and lasts just under 15 minutes: the lion waves Messina's flag and roars, the rooster crows and religious scenes rotate. Arrive by 11:50 for a spot.
- Orion Fountain: Renaissance fountain by Montorsoli in Piazza del Duomo, opposite the cathedral. Time: 10 minutes. Cost: Free. Best seen while you wait for the clock show.
- Santissima Annunziata dei Catalani: Small Norman-era church that survived the 1908 earthquake, a few minutes from the Duomo. Time: 15 minutes. Cost: Free to view. It sits below today's street level, showing how much the city was raised after the earthquake.
- Galleria Vittorio Emanuele III: Art nouveau shopping arcade with a glass roof, close to the cathedral. Time: 15 minutes. Cost: Free. A short cover from rain or sun between the Duomo and the waterfront.
- Sacrario di Cristo Re: Domed memorial church above the centre with a view over the harbour and the Strait. Time: 45 minutes including the climb. Cost: Free to view from outside. 15–20 minutes uphill from the centre. Go in the morning before the heat.
- MuMe – Regional Museum of Messina: The city's main museum, with paintings by Caravaggio and Antonello da Messina and sculpture by Montorsoli and Gagini. Time: 1.5 hours. Cost: Paid entry; check the price at the desk. It is north of the centre along the waterfront, so take a taxi if time is short.
- Taormina: Hill town above the Ionian Sea with a Greek-Roman theatre facing Etna; the classic excursion from Messina. Time: Half a day or more with the train. Cost: Teatro Antico €12; Castello di Taormina €10 (2026). The theatre is open daily 09:00–19:45. Events can close it at short notice.
Beaches
- Torre Faro and Capo Peloro: Urban buses run from the centre along the north coast; a taxi is quicker. About 14 km north of the centre The north-eastern tip of Sicily, where the Tyrrhenian and Ionian seas meet and Calabria is little more than 3 km away. The 224 m Pylon of Messina, a disused 1955 power-line tower, stands here.
- Isola Bella (Taormina): Train to Taormina-Giardini, bus up to Taormina, then the cable car down to Mazzarò. Allow most of the day Pebble beach. Reopened in June 2026 after months of closure. Only for long calls.
Common mistakes
- Assuming trains back from Taormina run every half hour. There are gaps of 90 minutes or more around midday. Pick your return train before you leave Messina.
- Walking up from Taormina-Giardini station. The town is about 200 m above the station. Use the local bus or the Interbus, which goes straight to the upper town.
- Trying to see the clock show and Taormina on the same day. The show is at 12:00 only. Choose one, unless your ship stays late.
- Expecting a digital train ticket to work on a later train. It locks to the booked train at departure time. Change it before then, or buy a new one.
- Heading for the old taxi rank or terminal entrance during the 2026 works. Taxis pick up on Via Vittorio Emanuele II at Largo Minutoli. Follow the port signs from your berth.
Safety and scams
Messina is safe for daytime visitors with normal care. The waterfront road beside the port carries heavy traffic, so cross at lights. Piazza del Duomo is crowded just before noon, which is when pickpockets have the best chance; keep bags closed. In Taormina the same applies on Corso Umberto.
- Pickpocketing in the crowd waiting for the noon clock show. Keep phones and wallets in front pockets.
- Drivers at the port offering Taormina trips at a high price without a written fare. Agree the full price, waiting time and return time before you get in.
- Bars around tourist squares with no price list charging more for granita and drinks. Check the price first.
Accessibility
Messina is a docking port, so there are no tenders. The centre is flat and close to the quays, though port works in 2026 may lengthen routes from some berths. The Sacrario di Cristo Re is up a hill. Taormina is steep, with steps and narrow lanes; the Interbus drops at the upper bus terminal, which avoids the climb from the station.
If it rains
Stay in Messina: the Cathedral, the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele III and the MuMe museum are all indoors. The clock show runs in any weather. Taormina's theatre and views lose most of their point in rain and cloud.
Crowds
Messina handled more than 760,000 cruise passengers and 250 calls in 2025. Piazza del Duomo fills from about 11:45 for the clock show. Trains to Taormina are busiest in the first hour after ships dock, and the Teatro Antico is busiest from mid-morning. No cruise passenger tax was found for Messina in 2026.
Questions cruise passengers ask
Is Messina cruise port walkable to the city centre?
Yes. Piazza del Duomo is 5–10 minutes on foot from the quays, and Messina Centrale station is just under 700 m away.
Is Messina a tender port?
No. Ships dock at the quays along Via Vittorio Emanuele II. A new terminal is under construction on the Colapesce quay in 2026.
What time is the Messina astronomical clock show and is it free?
Every day at 12:00, lasting just under 15 minutes. You watch it from Piazza del Duomo, a public square, so there is nothing to pay.
How do I get from Messina cruise port to Taormina?
Walk to Messina Centrale and take a regional train to Taormina-Giardini (€5.50, 39–76 minutes, 2026), then the local bus up. Or take Interbus IN09 from Piazza della Repubblica straight to the Taormina bus terminal (€4.30 one way).

What can I do in Messina in one day from a cruise ship?
Either Taormina by train, or stay: the Cathedral and the noon clock show, the Orion Fountain, the Catalani church, the climb to Cristo Re and the MuMe museum.

Is Messina safe for cruise passengers?
