La Spezia cruise port guide
Ships berth at Molo Garibaldi in a working cargo port, so a free shuttle bus takes you to the terminal building at the port exit. From there La Spezia Centrale station is about 2 km, a 25-minute flat walk, or a 5–15 minute taxi; the Cinque Terre Express reaches Riomaggiore in about 10 minutes. Leave the Cinque Terre villages two and a half hours before all-aboard, because platforms and trains are crowded in the afternoon.
La Spezia is the gateway port for the Cinque Terre, and most passengers spend the day on the coastal train rather than in the city. The trains are frequent but crowded, and the walk or ride from the cruise terminal to the station adds 30 minutes each way. Portovenere, on the other side of the gulf, is an easier half-day by bus or boat. Pisa and Florence are possible by train but leave little margin. La Spezia itself has a pleasant pedestrian centre and a hilltop castle, worth an hour at the end of the day.
When to head back to the ship
For a 17:30 all-aboard. Times count back from all-aboard using the travel times and buffers in this guide. Your ship's daily programme always wins. Re-time this to your own all-aboard.

Where people get La Spezia wrong: Passengers come back from the Cinque Terre on a late-afternoon train and forget the 25-minute walk and port shuttle still ahead of them.
Docking and getting to town
- Molo Garibaldi cruise berths and terminal building, 2 km to the centre. Two large ships can berth at once. Passengers cannot walk inside the cargo port, so free shuttle buses run between the ship and the terminal building at the port exit (about 10 minutes). The port authority plans a new dual-berth cruise pier for 2026 and a new terminal building for 2029.
Walkable? Yes, about 25 min. From the terminal building, Piazza Europa is about 5 minutes on foot, the old town around Piazza Verdi and Via del Prione about 10 minutes, and La Spezia Centrale station about 25 minutes on flat, mostly pedestrian streets. Add the shuttle from the ship.
Transport
- Port shuttle: Free; About 10 min. Runs between the ship and the terminal building at the port exit. You cannot walk through the cargo port.
- On foot to La Spezia Centrale: Free; About 25 min (2 km). Walk along the waterfront, then up Via del Prione to the station, or go through Piazza Verdi and the Via Chiodo arcades. Allow an hour if you stop on the way.
- City bus to the station: €1.50, 60-minute urban ticket (2026); Short ride. Lines S, L, C or 3 from the north side of Piazza Europa. Buy tickets at newsstands, tabacchi or the ATC office near Piazza Chiodo and validate on board; buying on the bus costs extra.

Return timing
Leave the Cinque Terre villages two and a half hours before all-aboard and Portovenere two and a quarter hours before. From Pisa or Florence, be back in La Spezia two hours before all-aboard. Afternoon trains and platforms are crowded and a full train may leave you behind. After the train you still have the 25-minute walk or a taxi to the terminal, then the shuttle to the ship. Check for transport strikes on your date.
If you are running late: Take a taxi from La Spezia Centrale to the cruise terminal (5–15 minutes). If you will miss all-aboard, call the port agent number on your daily programme straight away.

What to see
- Cinque Terre villages by train: Five cliffside fishing villages linked by a coastal railway: Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza and Monterosso. Time: 5–6 hours for two or three villages. Cost: Train €5–10 per ride or Card Treno €22–35 for a day (2026). Pick two or three villages, not all five. Start with the farthest and work back towards La Spezia.
- Sentiero Azzurro coastal path: The classic path between the villages; the Corniglia–Monterosso section has a ticket checkpoint. Time: 1.5–2 hours per section. Cost: Trekking Card €10 adult for a day, €15 on peak dates (2026); included in the Card Treno. Trails can close at short notice for weather, maintenance or crowd control. Check before you set off.
- Via dell'Amore (Riomaggiore–Manarola): The short cliff path between the two southern villages. Time: 30 minutes. Cost: About €10 add-on for card holders (2026); booking required. Book a time slot online; access is controlled.
- Portovenere: A walled harbour village at the tip of the Gulf of Poets; the gulf and the islands of Palmaria, Tino and Tinetto are UNESCO-listed. Time: 3 hours including the bus. Cost: Free to walk. Enter by the Porta del Borgo and walk the main lane to the church on the point.
- Church of San Pietro and Castello Doria, Portovenere: The church on the rocky point and the castle above the village, with views over the Cinque Terre coast. Time: 1.5 hours for both. Cost: San Pietro €2, Castello Doria €5 (2026). San Pietro opens 09:30–12:30 and 16:00–18:00 and closes on Mondays; the castle opens 10:30–18:30. Lord Byron's grotto below is free.
- Castello San Giorgio, La Spezia: Restored hilltop castle with an archaeology collection known for its sandstone statue-stelae, and a roof terrace over the gulf. Time: 1 hour. Cost: Check at the entrance. A free lift from the bottom of the hill saves the climb.
- Via del Prione and the Giardini Pubblici, La Spezia: The pedestrian old-town street and the waterfront gardens with the Garibaldi monument, between the station and the port. Time: 45 minutes. Cost: Free. On your way back from the station; shops close for a long midday break.
- Pisa: The Leaning Tower and the cathedral square. Time: 5 hours including trains. Cost: Regional train from about £8 each way (2026). Regional trains take about 1 hour to 1 hour 20 minutes, and some terminate at Pisa San Rossore rather than Pisa Centrale; check your train.
Beaches
- Palmaria and the islands (boat tour): Bus or ferry to Portovenere, then the islands boat tour About 1.5 hours for the tour A cruise round the islands rather than a beach landing; departures at 12:00 and 15:00 from 1 April to 2 November.
Common mistakes
- Expecting to walk off the ship into town. Take the free shuttle to the terminal building first; the cargo port is closed to pedestrians.
- Queuing for train tickets at La Spezia Centrale in the morning rush. Buy the Card Treno online or use the station machines, and validate before boarding.
- Trying to see all five villages. Choose two or three and leave the villages two and a half hours before all-aboard.
- Going to Florence on your own on a short call. It is about 2.5 hours each way by regional train. Use the ship's tour or go to Pisa instead.
- Relying on the ferry for the return. Sailings are cancelled in rough weather. Know the train or bus alternative before you go.
- Forgetting the walk back from the station. Allow 25 minutes on foot or a taxi from La Spezia Centrale, then the shuttle.
Safety and scams
La Spezia and the Cinque Terre are safe for visitors. Pickpockets work in crowded tourist areas, including trains and platforms, so keep bags closed and phones out of back pockets. The coastal paths are narrow, steep and can close at short notice for weather or maintenance; wear proper shoes and carry water. Transport strikes happen in Italy; check for one on your date. Dress modestly in churches.
- Pickpocketing on crowded trains, platforms and village lanes: keep valuables out of sight and bags zipped.
Accessibility
The shuttle, terminal and the walk to the station are flat. The Cinque Terre villages are steep and stepped, and the coastal paths are not accessible. Crowded trains and platforms add to the effort. Portovenere's main lane is level near the harbour; the church and castle involve steps. La Spezia's Castello San Giorgio has a free lift up the hill.
If it rains
Rain closes trails and can cancel ferries. Stay in La Spezia: Castello San Giorgio and its archaeology collection, the old cathedral with its della Robbia terracotta, and coffee on Via del Prione. The Cinque Terre villages are still reachable by train, but the lanes are slippery.
Crowds
Two large ships can be in port at once, and the Cinque Terre trains fill quickly when cruise passengers arrive together. Prices for trains and cards follow crowd bands, with the high band mostly on weekends from Easter to late August. Head to the farthest village first and come back early. Portovenere is a good alternative on the busiest days.
