Kuşadası (Ephesus) cruise port guide
Ships dock at Ege Port, in the centre of Kuşadası, and the town is a 5–10 minute walk. Ephesus is 18–19 km inland: about 25–30 minutes by taxi, or a Selçuk dolmuş to the Efes stop and a walk of about 1 km. Entry is €40 and the Terrace Houses €15 extra (2026); start back from Ephesus at least two hours before all-aboard if you rely on the dolmuş.
Kuşadası is the cruise gateway to Ephesus, and almost every passenger spends the day there. The port is in the town centre, so the town needs no transport, but Ephesus, the House of the Virgin Mary and Şirince all sit inland around Selçuk. Ege Port handled 617 cruise calls and about 995,000 passengers in 2025, its busiest year, so on most days several ships send coaches to the same ruins. The day turns on two choices: which Ephesus gate you enter, and whether you add the Terrace Houses, which cost extra.
When to head back to the ship
For a 17:00 all-aboard. Times count back from all-aboard using the travel times and buffers in this guide. Your ship's daily programme always wins. Re-time this to your own all-aboard.

Where people get Kuşadası (Ephesus) wrong: Relying on a dolmuş back from Ephesus too late, forgetting the 1 km walk from the Lower Gate to the stop and the unpredictable wait.
Docking and getting to town
- Ege Port Kuşadası cruise terminal, 0.5 km to the centre. Operated by Global Ports Holding, which raised its stake in the operating company to 99.99% in July 2026. You leave the secure area through the Scala Nuova shopping village, with shops and cafés, and come out at the bazaar. Taxis wait just outside the port gate; excursion coaches load inside the port.
Walkable? Partly, about 10 min. The town centre, bazaar and Kaleiçi old quarter are 5–10 minutes on foot. Pigeon Island is about 15 minutes: turn right out of the port and follow the seafront promenade to the causeway. Ephesus is 18–19 km away and cannot be reached on foot.
Transport
- Walk: Free; 5–15 min. Covers the bazaar, Kaleiçi, the Öküz Mehmet Paşa caravanserai, the seafront and Pigeon Island.
- Dolmuş (minibus) to Ephesus and Selçuk: Pay the driver's assistant in Turkish lira cash; ask the fare when you board; About 30 min to the Efes stop. White minibuses run between Kuşadası and Selçuk through the day. Ask for 'Efes' and get off at the Ephesus stop on the main road, not at Selçuk bus station. From the stop it is about 1 km on foot to the Lower Gate, or take a taxi from the rank there to the Upper Gate. Minibuses keep their own pace, so leave a wide margin for the return.
- Taxi: Agree a round-trip price, including waiting time, before you set off; 25–30 min to Ephesus. Taxis wait just outside the port gate all day and drivers offer round trips with waiting. A good plan: drop-off at the Upper Gate, pick-up at the Lower Gate. Licensed taxis in Kuşadası carry Aydın plates beginning '09 T'.
- Taxi to the House of the Virgin Mary or Şirince: Agree the price first; Mary's House is on Mount Koressos above Ephesus; Şirince is about 8 km east of Selçuk. There is no public transport up the mountain to Mary's House, so a taxi or tour is the only realistic way. Şirince has a dolmuş from Selçuk bus station (about 20 minutes), but combining it with Ephesus on a cruise day is easier by taxi.
Return timing
Start back from Ephesus by dolmuş two hours before all-aboard (15:00 for a 17:00 all-aboard); by pre-agreed taxi, 90 minutes before (15:30). The drive is 25–30 minutes, but dolmuş waits are unpredictable and you may first need to walk about 1 km from the Lower Gate to the stop. Aim to be on board 60 minutes before all-aboard. From Kaleiçi or Pigeon Island, the port is 5–15 minutes on foot.
If you are running late: If a dolmuş does not come, take a taxi from the rank at the Ephesus stop or the Lower Gate car park; it is 25–30 minutes to the port. Call the port agent number printed in your daily programme if you will be late.
A day in Kuşadası (Ephesus) (all-aboard 17:00)
Assumes docking at 07:30 and a round-trip taxi agreed at the port gate.
- 07:45 Leave the port and take a taxi to the Ephesus Upper Gate (25–30 minutes). Agree pick-up at the Lower Gate.
- 08:15 Enter at the Upper Gate and walk downhill past the Odeon and along Curetes Street.
- 09:15 Terrace Houses (open from 09:00, separate €15 ticket): about 45 minutes.
- 10:00 Library of Celsus, the Marble Road and the Great Theatre. Leave by the Lower Gate.
- 11:15 Taxi to Şirince. Walk the village lanes and taste fruit wine.
- 12:30 Lunch in Şirince.
- 13:45 Taxi back to Kuşadası, about 30 minutes.
- 14:30 Walk the seafront to Pigeon Island, then back through Kaleiçi and the bazaar.
- 16:00 Back on board, 60 minutes before all-aboard.
What to see
- Ephesus Archaeological Site: One of the largest Roman cities in the eastern Mediterranean: Curetes Street, the Library of Celsus and the Great Theatre. Time: 2–2.5 hours. Cost: €40 (2026), including the Ephesus Experience Museum; free for children 8 and under. Open daily from 08:00 (ticket office closes 17:45 on the current timetable). Enter at the Upper Gate and walk downhill; the first hour after opening is the quietest.
- Terrace Houses: Covered Roman town houses with mosaics and wall paintings, inside the Ephesus site. Time: 45 minutes. Cost: €15 (2026), on top of the Ephesus ticket. Open 09:00–17:00, ticket office closes 16:30. Tickets are sold at the Terrace Houses' own booth inside the site. Many steps; not wheelchair accessible.
- House of the Virgin Mary (Meryemana): A small chapel on Mount Koressos venerated by Christians and Muslims as Mary's last home. Time: 45 minutes plus the drive. Cost: Charged separately at the entrance; check on the day. No public transport; go by taxi or tour. Cover shoulders. The air is cooler than at Ephesus.
- Ephesus Museum, Selçuk: Statues and finds from Ephesus, including the Artemis figures. Time: 1 hour. Cost: Separate ticket; check on the day. Open daily 08:30–17:30, ticket office closes 17:00. In Selçuk town, a short taxi ride from the Lower Gate.
- Şirince: A hill village of stone houses about 8 km east of Selçuk, known for fruit wines. Time: 1.5–2 hours. Cost: Free to wander. Dolmuş from Selçuk bus station about every 20–30 minutes; on a cruise day a taxi from Ephesus is quicker.
- Pigeon Island (Güvercinada): A small fortified island joined to the seafront by a causeway; the castle dates from the 16th century. Time: 45 minutes. Cost: Free to walk the causeway. About 15 minutes from the port along the promenade. Good for the last hour before reboarding.
- Kaleiçi and the bazaar: The old quarter behind the port, entered through the gate beside the Öküz Mehmet Paşa caravanserai. Time: 1 hour. Cost: Free. Haggling is expected in the bazaar. Say 'no, teşekkür ederim' to shop invitations and keep walking.
Beaches
- Downtown Beach: Walk from the port; it lies between the harbour and the marina. Short walk The closest swim, with sunbeds and a café.
- Ladies Beach (Kadınlar Denizi): Walk south, or take a dolmuş signed 'Kadınlar Denizi' from the centre. About 30 min on foot The town's best-known beach, with a promenade of cafés. Open to everyone despite the name.
- Pamucak: Taxi, about 8 km north of town. About 15 min by car Long sandy beach close to the Ephesus road.
Common mistakes
- Entering Ephesus at the Lower Gate and walking uphill in the heat. Take a taxi to the Upper Gate and walk downhill to the Lower Gate, where taxis and the dolmuş road are.
- Assuming the Terrace Houses are included in the Ephesus ticket. They need a separate €15 ticket (2026), bought at their own booth inside the site.
- Staying on the dolmuş to Selçuk bus station. Ask for 'Efes' and get off at the Ephesus stop on the main road.
- Planning Mary's House by public transport. There is none up the mountain. Book a taxi or a tour.
- Carrying only cards and euros. Take some Turkish lira cash for the dolmuş, water and small purchases.
- Accepting a 'free' carpet or leather presentation near the port. These are sales sessions that eat into a short day. Decline politely.
Safety and scams
Kuşadası and Ephesus are safe for day visitors. The main risks are heat and slips: Ephesus has little shade, summer temperatures reach the high 30s °C, and the polished marble is slippery, especially after rain. Wear shoes with grip, carry water and a hat, and buy water before you enter. In town, expect persistent shop touts near the port and bazaar and keep bags closed in crowds.
- Fake or unlicensed taxis. Use the rank at the port gate and check that the plate begins '09 T'. Agree the round-trip price and waiting time before you set off.
- 'Free' carpet, leather or pottery presentations near the dock. They are high-pressure sales sessions; decline politely.
- Touts at the dock and in the bazaar selling tours and excursions. Use your ship, a licensed guide booked in advance, or a taxi from the rank.
- Fake jewellery and leather in the bazaar. Haggle, and do not pay luxury prices without proof of authenticity.
Accessibility
The terminal and the seafront to Pigeon Island are flat. Ephesus is hard going: streets are original marble and stone blocks with gaps, Curetes Street is a real slope, and wooden ramps near the Library of Celsus are steep. The easiest approach for wheelchair users is the Lower Gate, which has a firm gravel path and the flat Arcadian Way; a limited number of wheelchairs can be borrowed at the Lower Gate ticket office against ID. The Terrace Houses have many steps and are not accessible. Mary's House is reached by vehicle with only a short walk.
If it rains
Ephesus stays open in rain, but the marble becomes very slippery; wear grippy shoes and slow down. The Terrace Houses are under a roof, and the Ephesus Experience Museum (included in the ticket) and the Ephesus Museum in Selçuk are indoors. Şirince's wine houses and cafés make a sheltered lunch stop.
Crowds
Ege Port had its busiest year in 2025, and on multi-ship days Ephesus fills with coach groups from mid-morning. The first hour after opening is the quietest; the narrow Curetes Street and the area around the Library of Celsus jam first. The Terrace Houses open at 09:00 and are calmer early. Spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October) are cooler and easier than high summer.
