İzmir cruise port guide
Ships dock at Alsancak port, at the north end of the Kordon seafront; Alsancak's shops are 5 minutes away and Konak Square and the Kemeraltı bazaar 20–25 minutes on foot. Ephesus is a long day: about 75 minutes by road, or İZBAN with a change at Tepeköy to Selçuk (1h35 at best, nearly 2h50 with a bad connection). If you go by train, be back on board 90 minutes before all-aboard.
İzmir is a big working city rather than a resort, and few cruise ships call: the port saw 45 ships and about 76,000 passengers in the first 11 months of 2025. That means the city's sights are not crowded with cruise groups. Most passengers still head for Ephesus, which is further from here than from Kuşadası. A city day is easy on foot: along the Kordon to Konak's clock tower, into the Kemeraltı bazaar, and up to the Roman Agora.
When to head back to the ship
For a 17:30 all-aboard. Times count back from all-aboard using the travel times and buffers in this guide. Your ship's daily programme always wins. Re-time this to your own all-aboard.
| Leave from | Leave by | How |
|---|
| Konak Square or Kemeraltı | 16:15 (1 h 15 min before all-aboard) | Walk back along the Kordon, 20–25 min |
| Ephesus (train from Selçuk) | 13:00 (4 h 30 min before all-aboard) | İZBAN via Tepeköy or TCDD, up to 2h50 |
| Ephesus (taxi) | 14:45 (2 h 45 min before all-aboard) | Taxi by road, about 75 min |
| Alsancak cafés | 16:25 (1 h 5 min before all-aboard) | Walk, about 5 min to the gate |
Where people get İzmir wrong: Trying Ephesus by train on a short call, expecting a direct İZBAN when you must change at Tepeköy for an infrequent shuttle.
Docking and getting to town
- Alsancak cruise terminal (Port of İzmir), 2 km to the centre. On Atatürk Caddesi at the north end of the Kordon in Alsancak. The terminal has duty-free shops and cafés. Excursion coaches wait a short walk from the ship; yellow metered taxis wait outside the terminal. İZBAN's Alsancak station is about 1 km away on foot.
Walkable? Yes, about 25 min. Turn right out of the port and follow the Kordon waterfront south to Konak Square, 20–25 minutes on a flat promenade. Alsancak's streets of cafés and old houses are 5 minutes from the gate. Kadifekale castle is on a steep hill above the city; take a taxi up.
Transport
- Walk along the Kordon: Free; 20–25 min to Konak. The simplest way to the centre, along the seafront promenade.
- Taxi: Metered in town; agree the price first for long trips; Short hop to Konak; about 75 min by road to Ephesus. Yellow taxis wait outside the terminal. Drivers often offer sightseeing tours; say no firmly if you only want a ride, or agree a price before you start.
- ESHOT city buses: ₺35 per boarding, full fare (from 1 April 2026); Varies. Buses run from near the port exit towards Konak. Pay with an İzmirimKart; the card costs ₺200 plus travel credit (2026). Of limited use if you do not read Turkish route signs; walking or a taxi is easier.
- İzmir Metro: Paid with the İzmirimKart; Short hops in the centre. Stations at Konak and Basmane are useful for the old town and for regional trains from Basmane.
- Ferry (İzdeniz): Paid with the İzmirimKart; Short crossing. Konak to Karşıyaka across the bay is a cheap way to see the city from the water.
- İZBAN suburban train to Selçuk (for Ephesus): ₺40 for the first 20 km plus ₺1.50 per extra km, full fare (tariff since 24 November 2025); 1h35 at best; up to about 2h50 with a long wait at Tepeköy. From Alsancak station (about 1 km from the port), take a train towards the south and change at Tepeköy for the Selçuk shuttle, which runs 14 times a day with gaps of 60–95 minutes. Pay with the İzmirimKart and tap out at the orange validator at your exit station, or you are charged to the end of the line. From Selçuk, Ephesus is about 3 km; take a taxi.
- TCDD regional train Basmane–Selçuk: Separate TCDD ticket; not valid on İZBAN; 1h18–1h38 direct. Eight direct trains a day from Basmane station. Fewer departures than İZBAN, but no change; check the timetable before committing a cruise day to it.
Return timing
From Ephesus by train, be on a train out of Selçuk at least 4.5 hours before all-aboard (13:00 for a 17:30 all-aboard). From Konak or Kemeraltı, start walking back 75 minutes before. İZBAN from Selçuk with the Tepeköy change can take nearly 2h50 when connections are poor, plus about 15 minutes' walk from Alsancak station, and you need to be on board 90 minutes before all-aboard when relying on a train. Checking the Tepeköy connection in advance lets you leave later. From Konak the port is 20–25 minutes along the Kordon.
If you are running late: If a train connection fails, take a taxi; the road trip from Ephesus to İzmir is about 75 minutes. In the city, a taxi from Konak to the port is a short ride. Call the port agent number in your daily programme if you will be late.

- Agora of Smyrna: Open-air ruins of the Hellenistic and Roman market of ancient Smyrna. Time: 45 minutes. Cost: Ticket charged; check on the day. A short walk uphill from Kemeraltı, or a taxi from Konak.

Common mistakes
- Expecting a direct İZBAN train from Alsancak to Selçuk. Change at Tepeköy; the Selçuk shuttle runs only 14 times a day. Or use the direct TCDD train from Basmane.
- Not tapping out on İZBAN. Tap your İzmirimKart at the orange validator at your exit station, or you are charged to the end of the line.
- Trying Ephesus by train on a short call. Under about nine hours, take the ship's tour or an agreed taxi.
- Getting a taxi 'tour' you did not ask for. State your destination and decline tours firmly; agree any tour price before setting off.
- Walking up to Kadifekale in the afternoon heat. Take a taxi up and walk down if you want.
Safety and scams
İzmir is generally safe for day visitors. The main risks are pickpockets in the crowded lanes of Kemeraltı and traffic on the busy roads near Konak. Keep wallets in front pockets and bags zipped. Port security screens passengers at the terminal and the ship.
- Taxi drivers at the port pitching city tours. Decline firmly if you only want a ride; agree any tour price before you start.
- Persistent sellers of designer copies and jeans in Kemeraltı. Do not pay brand prices for copies.
- Pickpocketing in the crowded Kemeraltı lanes. Keep valuables in front pockets.
Accessibility
The terminal is at street level and the Kordon promenade to Konak is a long, flat walk. Kemeraltı's lanes are narrow, uneven and crowded. The Asansör connects the lower street with the hillside district above. Kadifekale and the Agora involve hills; use a taxi. İZBAN trains require tapping in and out at gates, and the Tepeköy change adds a platform transfer. Ephesus is hard for wheelchair users beyond its flat lower section.
If it rains
Stay in the centre: Kemeraltı's inns, including Kızlarağası Hanı, and its cafés give shelter, and the İzmir Archaeology Museum is near Konak. Ephesus in heavy rain is slippery and exposed, and the long journey makes it a poor choice that day.
Crowds
İzmir gets few cruise calls, so the city is busy with locals, not cruise groups. Kemeraltı is fullest at lunchtime. Ephesus is a different story: ships at Kuşadası send coach groups from mid-morning, so a train-based visit from İzmir usually arrives at the busiest time.
Questions cruise passengers ask
Is İzmir a tender port?
No. Ships dock at Alsancak port at the north end of the Kordon.
Is İzmir cruise port walkable to the city centre?
Yes. Alsancak is 5 minutes away and Konak Square and Kemeraltı are 20–25 minutes along the seafront.
How do I get from İzmir cruise port to Ephesus?

Can I do Ephesus by train from İzmir on a cruise day?
Only on a long call. The Selçuk shuttle runs 14 times a day and a bad connection at Tepeköy can stretch the trip to nearly 2h50. Be on a train out of Selçuk at least 4.5 hours before all-aboard.
What is the İzmirimKart and do I need one?
The city's transport card for buses, metro, ferries and İZBAN. It costs ₺200 plus credit (2026). You do not need it for a day on foot in the centre.

What can I do in İzmir in one day from a cruise ship?
