Gibraltar cruise port guide
Ships dock at the cruise terminal on the North Mole, about 1.5 km and a flat 15-minute walk from Casemates Square and Main Street. The cable car is closed for rebuilding until 2027, so reach the Upper Rock by taxi tour (about £50 per person including the £30 reserve ticket, 2026) or on foot. Start back from Casemates by 16:00 for a 17:30 all-aboard.
Gibraltar is a docked, walkable port with one big decision: how to get up the Rock. The cable car made its last trips in January 2026 and is being rebuilt, with reopening expected in 2027. That leaves taxi or minibus tours, or a long, steep walk. Everything on the Upper Rock (St Michael's Cave, the Great Siege Tunnels, the Apes' Den) sits inside the Nature Reserve, which needs a £30 adult ticket. Down in town, Main Street is flat, British and pedestrianised, and Europa Point is a bus ride south. Since July 2026 the land border with Spain no longer has routine passport checks, but cruise passengers should still carry their passport.
When to head back to the ship
For a 17:30 all-aboard. Times count back from all-aboard using the travel times and buffers in this guide. Your ship's daily programme always wins. Re-time this to your own all-aboard.
| Leave from | Leave by | How |
|---|
| Casemates Square / Main Street | 16:00 (1 h 30 min before all-aboard) | Walk about 15 min, flat |
| Upper Rock (taxi tour) | 15:45 (1 h 45 min before all-aboard) | Tour back in town by 15:45, then 15 min walk |
| Europa Point | 15:15 (2 h 15 min before all-aboard) | Route 2 bus or taxi to town, then walk |
Where people get Gibraltar wrong: Planning the day around the cable car, which is closed for rebuilding until 2027.
Docking and getting to town
- Gibraltar Cruise Terminal (North Mole, Western Arm), 1.5 km to the centre. A converted warehouse at the northern end of the port, open only when a ship is in. Taxis and tour minibuses wait outside. The port sometimes runs a paid shuttle minibus into town on busy days. The government invited bids in January 2026 to refurbish and run the terminal; no works dates are set.
Walkable? Yes, about 15 min. Flat walk from the terminal to the edge of town and on to Casemates Square, where Main Street begins. Main Street is pedestrianised. The Upper Rock is a different matter: steep roads and steps, and at least two hours on foot to the top areas.
Transport
- On foot to town: Free; About 15 min to Casemates Square. Leave the terminal and follow the waterfront road towards town; the route is flat and easy to follow. Casemates Square is the northern end of Main Street.
- Port shuttle minibus: Small fee; price not published; A few minutes. Run on some busy cruise days only. Not needed for most people, given the short, flat walk.
- Taxi Rock tour: £50 per person including the £30 Upper Rock ticket (2026, Gibraltar Taxi Association set price); 1–3 hours depending on tour. Taxis wait outside the terminal and offer shared Rock tours in minibuses of up to eight people. Tours from the frontier leave every 15 minutes, 09:30–15:30. Check what is included and the finish time before you pay. This is now the main way up while the cable car is closed.
- Gibraltar Bus Company and Citibus: Hopper day ticket £8.80 adult, £5.50 child (2026); Varies. Route 2 runs from Market Place (by Casemates) to Europa Point and is busy at weekends. The Hopper is valid 08:00–21:00 on all Gibraltar Bus Company and Citibus routes. Tickets from one operator are not valid on the other unless you hold a Hopper.
- Cable car: Closed; n/a. Closed for full rebuilding since January 2026; expected to reopen in 2027. Ignore any older guide that tells you to take it.
Return timing
Leave Casemates Square by 16:00 for a 17:30 all-aboard. Finish any Rock tour back in town by 15:45, and leave Europa Point by 15:15. The walk from Casemates to the terminal is about 15 minutes, and you want to be on board by 16:30. Rock tours run on roads shared with every other tour on a multi-ship day; book a slot that ends well before 15:45. Europa Point is at the far southern tip, so allow time for the bus or a taxi back through town.
If you are running late: Taxis wait at ranks in town and can reach the terminal in minutes. If you are running late, call the port agent number on your daily programme. The cruise terminal's own lines are +350 200 47671 and +350 200 47670.

Beaches
- Catalan Bay: Bus or taxi to the east coast of the Rock Short taxi ride from town Sandy beach by a former fishing village, the second-largest sandy beach in Gibraltar, with seafood restaurants. A seasonal Beach Bus serves it in July and August.
- Eastern Beach: Bus or taxi, north of Catalan Bay near the airport Short taxi ride from town Gibraltar's biggest sandy beach. Busy with locals on summer weekends.
Common mistakes
- Planning the day around the cable car. It is closed for rebuilding until 2027. Book a taxi Rock tour or allow at least two hours to walk up.
- Assuming the Upper Rock is free if you walk. The Nature Reserve ticket (£30 adult, 2026) applies to walkers too. Buy it at the Moorish Castle, Jews' Gate or Market Place offices, or online.
- Carrying food openly near the macaques. Pack food and loose items away. Feeding them is illegal (£500 fine) and they snatch bags.
- Paying in euros. Euros are accepted in many shops but at a poor rate. Use sterling or a card.
- Taking a late Rock tour slot on a multi-ship day. Book a morning tour and be back in town by 15:45.
Safety and scams
Gibraltar is safe for visitors. The main hazards are the macaques, which bite if provoked and steal food, and the steep, sun-exposed roads of the Upper Rock if you walk. Take water and a hat in summer. Traffic on the narrow Upper Rock roads is heavy with tour minibuses, so keep to the edge when walking.
- Euro pricing at a poor rate: some shops and cafés accept euros but give a bad exchange rate. Pay in pounds or by card.
- Unclear Rock tour inclusions: confirm whether the £30 reserve ticket is in the price and how long the tour lasts before you get in. The Gibraltar Taxi Association set price is £50 including the ticket (2026).
- Unofficial Nature Reserve tickets: buy only at the official offices or the official website, so the ticket is valid at every gate.
Accessibility
The terminal-to-town walk and Main Street are flat and step-free. The Upper Rock is steep, and St Michael's Cave and the Great Siege Tunnels involve steps and uneven floors. With the cable car closed, a taxi tour is the only practical way up for anyone with limited mobility; ask at the rank for a vehicle that suits you. Europa Point is a level, open area reached by bus or taxi.
If it rains
Rain or low cloud on the Rock spoils the views and makes the paths slippery. Stay in town: the Gibraltar National Museum (closed Sundays), the shops of Main Street, and long lunches around Casemates. St Michael's Cave and the Great Siege Tunnels are under cover, so a taxi tour still has value in light rain.
Crowds
Rock tours from multiple ships converge on the same few stops, especially the Apes' Den and St Michael's Cave in late morning. Go up early or after lunch. Main Street is busiest around midday. The Route 2 bus to Europa Point gets full at weekends. Check the port's monthly ship schedule for your date.
