Genoa cruise port guide
Ships dock at the Stazioni Marittime terminals on Ponte dei Mille and Ponte Andrea Doria, about 1 km from the city centre; Genova Piazza Principe station is a 6-minute covered walk. The old town and the aquarium (about 20 minutes, 1.5 km) are walkable, and a €2.00 AMT ticket covers the metro for 110 minutes (2026). For Portofino, take a regional train to Santa Margherita Ligure and AMT bus 782 (€5.00), and be on a train back three hours before all-aboard.
Genoa is a working city rather than a resort, and the cruise terminal sits right on its edge. You can walk off the ship into the medieval lanes (caruggi), the palaces of Via Garibaldi and the Porto Antico waterfront without any transport. The other choice is the Riviera: Portofino by train and bus, or the Cinque Terre, which is possible on a long call but tight. Genoa is also a turnaround port for several lines, so the terminal can be busy with luggage and coaches.
When to head back to the ship
For a 17:30 all-aboard. Times count back from all-aboard using the travel times and buffers in this guide. Your ship's daily programme always wins. Re-time this to your own all-aboard.
| Leave from | Leave by | How |

| Old town (caruggi) | 16:15 (1 h 15 min before all-aboard) | Walk, about 20 min |

Where people get Genoa wrong: Attempting the Cinque Terre on a short call; the trains and crowds eat the day.
Docking and getting to town
- Ponte dei Mille Cruise Terminal, 1 km to the centre. Run by Stazioni Marittime. About 16,000 m² on three levels linked by escalators and lifts; berths of 340 m and 290 m. Genova Piazza Principe station is a short covered walk.
- Ponte Andrea Doria Cruise Terminal, 1 km to the centre. Run by Stazioni Marittime. About 11,000 m² on two floors with two 300 m berths. Next to Ponte dei Mille; same exits towards Principe and the old town.
Walkable? Yes, about 20 min. Genova Piazza Principe station is about 6 minutes from the terminal by a lit, covered walkway. The aquarium and Porto Antico are about 20 minutes (1.5 km) on foot along the waterfront. The old town lanes start behind Porto Antico. Genoa is hilly: the caruggi are flat-ish, but anything above Via Garibaldi is steep, and lifts and funiculars help.
Transport
- Walk: Free; 6 min to Principe station; about 20 min to the aquarium. Follow the signs to Principe for the metro and trains, or walk east along the harbour to Porto Antico and the old town.
- Metro and city buses (AMT): €2.00 ordinary ticket, valid 110 minutes (2026); About 10 min Principe to San Giorgio (for the aquarium). The metro runs from Principe through Darsena and San Giorgio to De Ferrari and Brignole. The ordinary ticket also covers the Zecca–Righi funicular; the city lifts accept it too. Buy from machines, ticket offices, tabaccherie or the AMT app, and validate at the start of the trip.
- Regional train to Santa Margherita Ligure (Trenitalia): Distance-based Liguria regional fare; buy in the Trenitalia app or at the machines; About 26–60 min depending on stops. Trains leave from Genova Piazza Principe and Genova Brignole. Validate paper tickets before boarding. Santa Margherita Ligure–Portofino station is the stop for Portofino.
- AMT bus 782 Santa Margherita–Portofino: €5.00 single ride (2026); Short ride along the coast road. The ordinary €2.00 ticket is not valid on this line. Buy the 782 ticket from AMT offices, the app, tabaccherie or machines, and validate it on board. Queues form in Santa Margherita in high season.
- Boats to Portofino: Check at the ticket office; Seasonal. Golfo Paradiso runs seasonal boat trips from Genova Porto Antico to Camogli, San Fruttuoso and Portofino, from March into the autumn, subject to weather. From Santa Margherita, Traghetti Portofino (Servizio Marittimo del Tigullio) Line 1 links Santa Margherita, Portofino and San Fruttuoso; tickets are sold only at the boarding point and sailings need at least 20 passengers.
- Train to the Cinque Terre: Liguria fare plus a Cinque Terre supplement of €3, €5 or €6 by day category (2026); Just under an hour to Monterosso on the fastest trains; longer on regionals. Between Levanto and La Spezia, non-Liguria residents pay the special Cinque Terre fare (€5, €8 or €10 per single trip, valid 75 minutes) from 14 March to 1 November 2026. Only realistic on a long call.
Return timing
From Portofino, be on a train out of Santa Margherita at least 3 hours before all-aboard (14:30 for a 17:30 all-aboard). From the old town or the aquarium, start walking back 75 minutes before. Allow for the 782 bus queue or boat timetable, a train of up to an hour, the walk from Principe, and 90 minutes on board before all-aboard because the return depends on a train. From the aquarium the walk is about 20 minutes, or take the metro from San Giorgio to Principe.
If you are running late: If a train is cancelled, take the next regional or Intercity to Piazza Principe; Brignole also connects to Principe by metro. In the city, a taxi to the terminal is short. Call the port agent number in your daily programme if you might be late.

What to see
- Old town (caruggi) and Via San Lorenzo: A dense grid of narrow lanes between the port and Piazza De Ferrari. Time: 1.5–2 hours. Cost: Free. Go by day and keep to the busier lanes around San Lorenzo, Piazza Banchi and Via Garibaldi.
- Via Garibaldi and the Musei di Strada Nuova: The UNESCO-listed Rolli palaces: Palazzo Rosso, Palazzo Bianco and Palazzo Doria Tursi, with Van Dyck, Rubens, Caravaggio and Paganini's violin. Time: 1.5 hours. Cost: Charged; check museidigenova.it. Closed on Mondays. Open Tuesday to Friday 09:00–19:00, weekends 10:00–19:30. During the Rolli Days (16–18 October 2026) extra palaces open with booking.
- Acquario di Genova: Genoa's large aquarium on the Porto Antico waterfront. Time: 2 hours. Cost: From €26 for a fixed-date ticket; Open Flexi from €38 (2026). Prices rise closer to the date; buy early online. Open every day of the year; last entry is two hours before closing.

- Cinque Terre: The five cliff villages between Levanto and La Spezia. Time: Full day. Cost: Train fare plus Cinque Terre fare or supplement (2026). Only on a long call and early start. A ship tour removes the risk of missing the ship.
Beaches
- Santa Margherita Ligure: Regional train from Piazza Principe or Brignole. About 26–60 min by train Genoa has no beach within walking distance of the terminal; combine a swim stop here with Portofino.
Common mistakes
- Taking a taxi into town. Principe station is 6 minutes on foot and the old town and aquarium are walkable.
- Using the €2.00 AMT ticket on the Portofino bus. Line 782 needs its own €5.00 ticket.
- Planning the Strada Nuova museums on a Monday. They close on Mondays. Do the old town, Porto Antico and the aquarium instead.
- Attempting the Cinque Terre on a short call. The trains and crowds eat the day. Choose Portofino, or book the ship's tour.
- Leaving the aquarium ticket until the day. Fixed-date tickets are cheaper the earlier you buy.
- Not validating train or bus tickets. Stamp paper tickets before boarding trains and on AMT vehicles.
Safety and scams
Genoa is generally safe by day for visitors. The old town's lanes are narrow and dark; stay on the main routes around San Lorenzo, Via Garibaldi and Porto Antico, and avoid empty side lanes after dark. Watch for pickpockets on crowded trains to the Riviera and at Principe and Brignole. Traffic on the waterfront road is heavy; cross at lights.
- Third-party resellers charging more for aquarium tickets than the official site. Buy on acquariodigenova.it, where earlier purchase is cheaper.
- Pickpocketing on crowded Riviera trains and in Portofino and Cinque Terre crowds. Keep bags closed and in front.
- Paper train and bus tickets that are not validated are treated as no ticket by inspectors. Always stamp before travel.
Accessibility
The Ponte dei Mille terminal has lifts and escalators across its levels. Request assistance from Stazioni Marittime or your cruise line at least 48 hours ahead, and arrange any taxi or private car access to the quay in advance. The covered walk to Principe is level. The old town has narrow lanes, cobbles and steps; Porto Antico and the aquarium are the easiest areas. Genoa's lifts, such as the Castelletto lift, help with the hills. Regional trains to Portofino often have steps.
If it rains
The aquarium is the obvious wet-weather choice, and the Musei di Strada Nuova and Palazzo Reale take a morning (both closed on Mondays). The Sottoripa arcades along the old harbour are covered. Portofino and the Cinque Terre are not worth it in heavy rain, and boats may be cancelled.
Crowds
Genoa is a turnaround port, so embarkation days bring luggage queues and coaches at the terminal. The aquarium is busiest late morning and at weekends. Portofino and the Cinque Terre are crowded from late morning in high season, and trains between Levanto and La Spezia are packed. The Rolli Days (16–18 October 2026) bring extra visitors to Via Garibaldi; booking is required for the palaces.
Questions cruise passengers ask
