Falmouth cruise port guide
Ships dock at the Historic Falmouth Cruise Port, a two-berth pier on the edge of town; Water Square is under half a mile on foot. Dunn's River Falls is about an hour's drive east (US$25 adult, 2026) and Martha Brae rafting about 20 minutes. Be back on board 60 minutes before all-aboard, and leave Dunn's River at least two and a half hours before.
Falmouth is a small Georgian town that became a major cruise port with the opening of the Historic Falmouth pier, where Royal Caribbean has its own berth. The port itself is a fenced shopping and dining zone; the town beyond the gates is quieter and still shows some damage from Hurricane Melissa, which hit Jamaica in October 2025. The port reopened to cruise ships on 2 December 2025. Most passengers head out of town: Martha Brae rafting and Good Hope are close, while Dunn's River Falls near Ocho Rios and the beaches of Montego Bay are each a long drive. Pick one, and agree all taxi prices before you set off.

Montego Bay is about 18 miles away; allow up to about 50 minutes, as for the 22-mile airport run (30–50 minutes). Martha Brae and Water Square are close.
If you are running late: Call the port agent number on your daily programme as soon as you know you will be late, and have your driver head straight for the port. There is no ride-hailing in Falmouth; agree with your taxi driver in advance how to reach them.

Common mistakes
- Booking Dunn's River with a private driver and leaving the falls late. It is about an hour each way. Leave the falls at least 150 minutes before all-aboard, or take the ship's tour.
- Getting into a taxi without agreeing the price. Use the official rank, where registered taxis offer flat rates. Confirm currency, waiting time and return time.
- Planning on Uber or Lyft for the return. Neither operates in Falmouth. Arrange your return ride in advance.
- Booking Glistening Waters on a day call. The glow is only visible after dark; do it only on a late sailing.
- Having no small US bills. Carry small notes for tips, raftsmen and vendors; US dollars are widely accepted in tourist areas.
Safety and scams
The US State Department rates Jamaica at Level 2 (exercise increased caution) for crime and health. Armed robbery and sexual assault are more common in Kingston and Montego Bay; several Montego Bay neighbourhoods (including Flankers, Mount Salem, Norwood and Salt Spring) and Steer Town in St Ann are at Level 3. Trelawny parish is not singled out. Tourist areas generally have lower violent crime. In Falmouth stay on main streets, travel in a group, keep valuables out of sight and use only licensed taxis. There is a police station at the edge of the port. Dial 119 for police and 110 for ambulance or fire.
- Unlicensed excursion sellers near the port who overcharge or fail to deliver: book with your ship or a licensed operator.
- Taxi fares changed at the end of the trip: agree a flat rate and currency at the official rank before you get in.
- Pushy vendors around the port: a firm, polite refusal usually works.
Accessibility
The terminal is air-conditioned with wheelchair-accessible toilets. Pavements in town are uneven and some areas still show hurricane damage. Dunn's River involves climbing wet rock and is not accessible to wheelchair users. Rafting needs you to step down onto a bamboo raft. A trolley tour of the town is the easiest way to see Falmouth with limited mobility.
If it rains
Heavy rain can make Dunn's River and river trips unsafe or uncomfortable. Stay in or near the port, visit a rum tour such as Hampden Estate, or take a Great House tour at Rose Hall or Good Hope.
Crowds
Falmouth's pier takes two of the largest ships at once, and Dunn's River opens earlier on cruise-ship days (Wednesday to Friday). Go to the falls as early as possible. Martha Brae and the town are calmer later in the day, after the ship tours have left.
