Willemstad cruise port guide
Ships dock on the Otrobanda side of Willemstad, at the Mega Pier or the Mathey Wharf terminal, so you walk into the historic centre without transport. Punda, with the coloured Handelskade waterfront, is about half a mile away across St Anna Bay. For a beach, take a taxi to Mambo Beach, about US$23 per car; leave it by 15:30 for a 17:30 all-aboard.
Willemstad is a docking port with a UNESCO-listed city on both sides of the harbour channel. Ships berth in Otrobanda, next to Rif Fort and the Renaissance mall, and Punda faces you across St Anna Bay. The Queen Emma pontoon bridge normally links the two halves and swings open for passing ships. The best beaches are 15 to 45 minutes away by road, and the buses are minibuses with no stop at the terminals, so the day here is a choice: the city on foot, or the city plus a taxi to a beach.
When to head back to the ship
For a 17:30 all-aboard. Times count back from all-aboard using the travel times and buffers in this guide. Your ship's daily programme always wins. Re-time this to your own all-aboard.
| Leave from | Leave by | How |
|---|
| Punda (Handelskade) | 16:00 (1 h 30 min before all-aboard) | Walk 0.5 mile via bridge or free ferry |
| Mambo Beach | 15:30 (2 h before all-aboard) | Taxi, about 15 min |
| Kenepa beaches (Westpunt) | 15:00 (2 h 30 min before all-aboard) | Taxi or hire car, about 45 min |
| Playa Cas Abao | 15:50 (1 h 40 min before all-aboard) | Taxi or hire car, about 40 min |
Where people get Willemstad wrong: Relying on irregular local minibuses, which have no stop at the terminals, to get back from a beach.
Docking and getting to town
- Mega Pier (berths 1 and 2), 0.8 km to the centre. On the Otrobanda side near Rif Fort, for ships too large to pass under the Queen Juliana Bridge. Mega Pier 2 takes ships up to 225,000 GT. The walk into town runs through the Renaissance Resort property, behind Rif Fort. Punda and the Queen Emma Bridge are about 0.5 mile (0.8 km) away. Taxis wait at the terminal stands, first come, first served. Free Wi-Fi for 30 minutes.
- Mathey Wharf cruise terminal (Curaçao Cruise Terminal), 0.8 km to the centre. Two berths inside St Anna Bay for smaller ships, which pass the city and turn in Schottegat Bay. Punda is about 0.5 mile away. Taxi stand outside.
Walkable? Yes, about 15 min. Flat. From either terminal walk along the Otrobanda waterfront past Rif Fort to the Queen Emma Bridge (about 0.5 mile), then cross the pontoon bridge to Punda and Handelskade. Kura Hulanda is about 10 minutes from Punda via the bridge. When the bridge swings open for a ship, a free passenger ferry crosses instead. Streets in Punda and Otrobanda are paved but uneven in places.
Transport
- On foot: Free; About 0.5 mile to Punda. Rif Fort is next to the Mega Pier. Cross St Anna Bay on the Queen Emma Bridge. The bridge was disconnected for work on 2 August 2026, with reopening expected from late September to early October 2026; check its status on arrival.
- Free ferry across St Anna Bay: Free; A few minutes. Carries pedestrians between Otrobanda and Punda while the Queen Emma Bridge is swung open for shipping, which can happen up to about 30 times a day.
- Taxi: Willemstad to Mambo Beach about US$23 per car; port to airport about US$34 (2026); About 15 min to Mambo Beach. Fares are per taxi, not per person. Agree the fare before you get in. Uber and Lyft do not operate. For sightseeing by the hour, expect about US$20 an hour. Taxis queue at both terminals.
- Local minibuses (konvoi): About US$2 one way, paid in guilders; Irregular. Private minibuses with 'Bus' on the number plate run common routes. There is no stop directly outside either terminal, timetables are unreliable and you need guilder cash. Not recommended on a cruise day with a fixed all-aboard.
Return timing
Leave Mambo Beach or other east-side beaches by 15:30 for a 17:30 all-aboard, and be back on board by 16:30. From Punda, start walking back by 16:00. The taxi from Mambo Beach takes about 15 minutes, but you may wait for a taxi, and Willemstad's evening rush starts around 17:00. The walk from Punda is about 0.5 mile, but the Queen Emma Bridge can swing open for a passing ship, and you then wait for the ferry. From Westpunt beaches such as Kenepa (about 45 minutes' drive), leave by 15:00.
If you are running late: Ask a beach club or restaurant to call a taxi. If the bridge is open and the ferry queue is long, a taxi can cross by the high Queen Juliana Bridge. If you will miss all-aboard, call the port agent number on your daily programme at once.

Beaches
- Mambo Beach: Taxi About 15 min Long sand beach behind a breakwater, calm water, beach clubs, shops and restaurants. Busy but spread out.
- Jan Thiel Beach: Taxi East of Willemstad Artificial beach, crowded, rocky entry.
- Playa Cas Abao: Taxi or hire car About 40 min Good snorkelling, restaurant, showers. Open 08:00–18:00. Last part is a rough gravel road.
- Kenepa Grandi (Grote Knip) and Kenepa Chiki: Hire car or tour About 45 min Clear water and snorkelling; watch for manchineel trees. Too far for a tight call.
Common mistakes
- Agreeing a taxi fare per person. Fares are per taxi. Agree the total before you set off; Willemstad to Mambo Beach is about US$23.
- Relying on local minibuses to get back to the ship. They have no stop at the terminals, run irregularly and need guilder cash. Use a taxi for anything outside the city.
- Planning a synagogue visit on a weekend. Mikvé Israel-Emanuel is open to visitors on weekdays; put it first on a Monday to Friday call.
- Driving to Westpunt on a short call. Kenepa and Cas Abao are 40–45 minutes each way. On an early all-aboard, stay with Mambo Beach.
- Assuming the bridge is always there. The Queen Emma Bridge swings open for ships and was closed for work in August 2026. Leave margin and know where the ferry lands.
Safety and scams
Curaçao is generally safe for visitors, and the historic centre is busy by day. Car break-ins are the main crime problem, so leave nothing in a hire car or taxi. After dark, stay on lit streets in Punda and Otrobanda and avoid the industrial Schottegat zone. Manchineel trees grow along many beaches: do not touch them, stand under them in rain or eat the fruit, which is toxic. Police 911, ambulance 912.
- Taxi overcharging: there is no ride-hailing app, so agree the fare per taxi before setting off.
- Teenagers asking drivers for 'parking' money, reported at about US$10: decline politely and use proper car parks.
- Car break-ins at beach car parks: take valuables with you or leave them on the ship.
Accessibility
The route from both terminals into Otrobanda is flat. The Queen Emma Bridge is a floating pontoon; the free ferry is the alternative when the bridge is open for shipping. Punda's streets are level but pavements are narrow and uneven. Rif Fort's walls and Fort Amsterdam include steps. Ask the ship about wheelchair-accessible taxis before you go ashore. Beaches outside the city are sand without boardwalks.
If it rains
Showers are usually short. Use the museums: Kura Hulanda, the Maritime Museum, the Fort Church Museum and the Jewish Museum fill a morning. Rif Fort and the Renaissance mall next to the Mega Pier have covered shops and cafés.
Crowds
Several ships can call together, and Handelskade and the Queen Emma Bridge are busiest from mid-morning. Go to Punda first thing, while the floating market is busiest and before tour groups arrive, and do Otrobanda's museums when Punda fills. Weekend afternoons in Punda are crowded; Sunday afternoons in Otrobanda are quiet because many shops close.
