Costa Maya cruise port guide
Ships dock at the long Puerto Costa Maya pier, so there is no tender. The village of Mahahual is about 3 km away: a taxi costs about US$5 a person each way (2026) and takes 5-10 minutes; walking takes 30-45 minutes in heat. Leave Mahahual 90 minutes before all-aboard, because getting back through the pier complex adds 10-15 minutes.
Costa Maya is a purpose-built cruise complex on an empty stretch of the southern Quintana Roo coast. The pier leads into a shopping village with pools, but there is no sea swimming inside it. The real town is Mahahual, a small fishing village with a car-free seafront walk and beach clubs a short taxi ride away. The classic inland trip is the Maya site of Chacchoben, about an hour away by road, which closes early in the afternoon. Royal Caribbean Group took over running the port in 2025, and up to four ships can berth at once, so Mahahual can be crowded on busy days.
When to head back to the ship
For a 17:30 all-aboard. Times count back from all-aboard using the travel times and buffers in this guide. Your ship's daily programme always wins. Re-time this to your own all-aboard.
| Leave from | Leave by | How |
|---|
| Mahahual malecón (lighthouse taxi rank) | 16:00 (1 h 30 min before all-aboard) | Taxi or shuttle, 5-10 min, then the port village and pier |
| Beach clubs south of the village | 16:10 (1 h 20 min before all-aboard) | Golf cart or taxi, 10-20 min |
| Chacchoben ruins | 14:45 (2 h 45 min before all-aboard) | Road transfer, about 1 hour |
| Port village | 16:30 (1 h before all-aboard) | Walk or trolley along the pier |
Where people get Costa Maya wrong: Leaving Mahahual too late and forgetting the 10-15 minute walk through the port village and the long pier after the taxi ride.
Docking and getting to town
Not a tender port in normal operation. The pier has four berths; if more ships call, extra ships may anchor and tender.
- Puerto Costa Maya pier and port village, 3 km to the centre. Long pier with four berths, three for large ships. A trolley runs along the pier; you can also walk it. The pier leads into a shopping and pool complex, and getting out to the taxi rank takes 10-15 minutes because the layout is a maze. Taxis, a shuttle to Mahahual and golf-cart rental are at the exit.
Walkable? Partly, about 45 min. Mahahual is about 3 km (2 miles) from the port. The walk is flat but unshaded, hot and humid, and takes 30-45 minutes to the beach. Most people take a taxi. Once in Mahahual, the seafront walk (malecón) is about a mile long and car-free.
Transport
- Pier trolley: Free; A few minutes. Runs along the long pier between the ships and the port village. You can walk instead.
- Taxi to Mahahual: About US$5 a person each way (2026); 5-10 min. Taxis wait at the exit of the port complex and usually drop you at the lighthouse (El Faro) at the start of the malecón. Fares are quoted per person; agree the price before you get in and walk away from higher quotes. Taxis back to the port leave from the lighthouse.
- Shuttle to Mahahual: About US$5 a person each way (2026); 5-7 min. A shuttle runs between the port and Mahahual for a small fee. Carry small US dollar notes.
- Golf cart hire: About US$60 a day (2026); Self-drive. Booth at the port exit. Useful for reaching quieter beaches south of the village.
- Organised tour to Chacchoben: Varies by line; Norwegian lists from £120.61 an adult (2026); About 4 hours including about 1 hour each way by road. Most passengers visit the ruins on a ship tour or a pre-booked local tour. The site is about an hour inland and the last entry is 14:30.
Return timing
Leave Mahahual 90 minutes before all-aboard (16:00 for a 17:30 all-aboard) and be on board 60 minutes before. The taxi takes 5-10 minutes, but you then walk through the port village maze and along a long pier. On four-ship days the taxi line at the lighthouse and the trolley can both have queues. From Chacchoben, allow about an hour on the road, so leave the site by 14:45 at the latest for a 17:30 all-aboard.
If you are running late: If the taxi line in Mahahual is long, taxis can also be picked up at Jaime's at the Blue Reef. Do not take unlicensed drivers. If you will miss all-aboard, call the port agent number on your daily programme straight away.
A day in Costa Maya (all-aboard 17:30)

Beaches
- Mahahual village beach: Taxi to the lighthouse, then walk along the malecón 5-10 min by taxi Barriers keep sargassum seaweed off most of the village beach, but it can still pile up and smell in some seasons.
- Jaime's at the Blue Reef: Taxi from the port; taxis also wait outside to return About 10 min Small club with limited places, so book ahead.
- The Krazy Lobster Beach Club: Taxi to Mahahual, then walk the malecón 5-10 min by taxi Lockers, umbrellas, Wi-Fi and kayaks.
- Beaches south of the village: Golf cart or taxi along the coastal road 10-20 min Quieter, with eco-hotels and fewer facilities.
Common mistakes
- Staying in the port village and thinking it is the town. Costa Maya is the cruise complex; Mahahual is the village 3 km away. Take a taxi for the real seafront.
- Getting in a taxi without agreeing the fare. The going rate is about US$5 a person each way (2026). Confirm per-person price before you sit down.
- Planning an afternoon visit to Chacchoben. INAH lists last entry at 14:30 and the drive is about an hour. Go in the morning.
- Leaving Mahahual 30 minutes before all-aboard. Leave 90 minutes before. The port complex and long pier take time after the taxi ride.
- Not asking which currency your change will be in. Dollars are widely taken but change may come in pesos. Carry small US dollar notes and confirm before paying.
Safety and scams
The US State Department rates Quintana Roo at Level 2, exercise increased caution, because of crime; the advice centres on Cancún, Playa del Carmen, Tulum and Cozumel, and on staying alert after dark. Mahahual on a port day is a small village with daytime crowds, but use taxis from the port rank or the lighthouse rank rather than unlicensed drivers. The UK warns that sea conditions can be unpredictable and some beaches are unpatrolled. Hurricane season runs from June to November and can cancel calls. In February 2026 residents blocked access to the cruise pier for nearly four hours during a protest, which stopped passengers leaving the port.
- Inflated taxi fares: drivers sometimes quote double the usual per-person fare. Ask another driver; the normal rate is about US$5 a person each way (2026).
- Unlicensed taxis: UK and US advice warns that unlicensed drivers have robbed passengers in Mexico. Use the organised rank at the port exit and the lighthouse.
- Change given in pesos at a poor rate: confirm before paying whether change will be in dollars or pesos.
Accessibility
The pier is long, but the trolley runs along it. The port village is level but busy and maze-like. Mahahual's malecón is a flat paved walkway, while the beach itself is soft sand. Chacchoben involves forest paths and a raised platform reached by steps; Norwegian rates its tour as moderate and unsuitable for guests with walking difficulties.
If it rains
Rain is usually short tropical showers, but sea swimming and snorkelling may be poor. The port village has covered shops and the Kakaw chocolate and tequila exhibits. Chacchoben still works in light rain, though paths get slippery and insects are worse in the rainy season (May to October).
Crowds
Up to four ships can berth, which can put around 15,000 passengers into a village of a few streets. The taxi line at the port exit is longest in the first hour; leave a little later or walk the pier slowly. Go to the malecón early, then claim a beach club spot. Return before the mid-afternoon rush to the lighthouse taxi rank.
