Copenhagen cruise port guide
Copenhagen has three cruise berths. From Langelinie and Nordre Toldbod you can walk to the Little Mermaid in about 5 minutes and on to Nyhavn; from Oceankaj in Nordhavn take bus 25 or 164 to Orientkaj and metro M4 to Kongens Nytorv, about 20 minutes on a 2-zone ticket (24 kr). Start back 75 minutes before you must be on board from Oceankaj, 45 minutes from Langelinie.
Which quay your ship uses decides the day in Copenhagen. Langelinie and Nordre Toldbod are on the city's waterfront, minutes from the Little Mermaid, with Amalienborg and Nyhavn a pleasant walk south. Oceankaj, where most large ships now berth, is out in the Nordhavn container port and needs a bus and the metro. Once in the centre, everything is flat and close: Nyhavn's canal boats, Rosenborg's crown jewels, Christiansborg on its island and Tivoli by the central station. Copenhagen is also a major turnaround port, so on some days the terminals are busy with luggage and coaches rather than day visitors.
When to head back to the ship
For a 17:30 all-aboard. Times count back from all-aboard using the travel times and buffers in this guide. Your ship's daily programme always wins. Re-time this to your own all-aboard.

Where people get Copenhagen wrong: Assuming you can walk into town from Oceankaj; it is about 45 minutes just to the metro.
Docking and getting to town
- Oceankaj (Ocean Quay), Nordhavn, 8 km to the centre. The largest terminal and furthest from the centre, about 8 km by road and 25–30 minutes by car. Too far to walk to the metro (about 45 minutes). Buses 25 and 164 stop at the terminal and run to Orientkaj metro (M4); when ships are in, buses run every 10–20 minutes. Cruise lines may run a shuttle; check on board.
- Langelinie, 2 km to the centre. On the waterfront next to the Little Mermaid (about 5 minutes on foot). Bus 27 runs from the Indiakaj stop, 5 minutes from the ships, to Østerport station; it usually runs only when cruise ships are in. Østerport is about 15 minutes' walk.
- Nordre Toldbod, 1.5 km to the centre. Smallest and most central berth, just south of the Little Mermaid. About 10 minutes' walk along the water to Amalienborg and Nyhavn, and about 14 minutes to Marmorkirken metro (M3/M4). Harbour buses 991 and 992 stop nearby.
Walkable? Partly, about 25 min. From Langelinie: 5 minutes to the Little Mermaid, then south past Nordre Toldbod and along the water to Amalienborg and Nyhavn, all flat, about 25 minutes in total. From Nordre Toldbod it is about 10 minutes to Amalienborg or Nyhavn. From Oceankaj, walking is not practical: take the bus and metro or a taxi.

Common mistakes
- Assuming you can walk into town from Oceankaj. It is about 45 minutes just to the metro. Take bus 25 or 164 to Orientkaj and metro M4.
- Turning up at Rosenborg without a timed ticket in summer. Book a slot online; it is cheaper (140 kr) and slots sell out.
- Walking in the cycle lanes. Copenhagen's cycle lanes are busy and fast. Stay on the pavement and look both ways before crossing them.
- Planning a summer Tivoli visit on an autumn or winter call. Tivoli opens only in themed seasons; check the season dates before you plan around it.
- Eating on the Nyhavn quayside. Prices reflect the view. Torvehallerne or Reffen give better value.
- Buying a 3-zone ticket for the city. A 2-zone ticket (24 kr) covers any cruise terminal to central Copenhagen; 3 zones are needed only for the airport.
Safety and scams
Copenhagen is a safe city by day. Pickpockets work in crowded places: Nyhavn, Strøget, Central Station and on busy metro trains. The most common danger for visitors is cycle traffic: bike lanes run beside every main road and cyclists move fast. In an emergency call 112.
- Pickpocketing in crowds at Nyhavn, on Strøget and around Central Station. Keep bags zipped and phones out of back pockets.
- Street 'shell games' on or near Strøget, where onlookers in the crowd are part of the act. Do not play.
- Overpriced food and drinks on the Nyhavn quayside. Check the menu prices before you sit down.
Accessibility
Copenhagen is flat and most pavements are smooth, which makes the Langelinie–Little Mermaid–Nyhavn walk manageable for most people. From Oceankaj, the bus and metro route works for wheelchair users, but a taxi is simpler. Rosenborg has no lift: wheelchair users can see only the ground floor and the Treasury, with help on the steps. Cobbles around Nyhavn and Amalienborg are uneven.
If it rains
Rosenborg and Christiansborg are both mostly indoors and close to the metro. Torvehallerne's glass halls are a dry place for lunch. A covered canal boat still works in light rain.
Crowds
The Little Mermaid is busiest from about 10:00 to 14:00, when coach groups stop there, so go early or late. Nyhavn and the canal-tour queues peak around midday. Rosenborg limits entry with timed slots that sell out in summer. On turnaround days the terminals are busy with arrivals and departures; leave extra time at Oceankaj.
