Catania cruise port guide
Ships dock in the Port of Catania, at the southern edge of the historic centre; Piazza del Duomo is a flat 15–25 minute walk from the port exit, so no transport is needed for the city. Taormina is 36–68 minutes away by regional train (€5.50 one way, 2026), but Etna does not work by public bus on a cruise day. Be back on board 60 minutes before all-aboard, or 90 if you rely on the train.
Catania is a docking port where the city starts at the port gate. The baroque centre, rebuilt in dark lava stone after the 1693 earthquake, is compact and flat, and the fish market sits right behind Piazza del Duomo. The real decision is what to do with Etna and Taormina. Taormina is an easy train ride up the coast. Etna is not: the only public bus to the volcano leaves once a day and returns too late for most ships, so the mountain needs a ship tour or a private driver.
When to head back to the ship
For a 17:30 all-aboard. Times count back from all-aboard using the travel times and buffers in this guide. Your ship's daily programme always wins. Re-time this to your own all-aboard.
| Leave from | Leave by | How |
|---|
| Piazza del Duomo | 16:05 (1 h 25 min before all-aboard) | Walk via Via Dusmet, 15–25 min |
| Castello Ursino | 16:10 (1 h 20 min before all-aboard) | Walk, 15–20 min |
| Taormina-Giardini station | 15:00 (2 h 30 min before all-aboard) | Train up to 68 min, then walk to port |
| Taormina town (bus terminal) | 14:45 (2 h 45 min before all-aboard) | Local bus down 5–15 min, then train |
Where people get Catania wrong: Relying on the last workable train back from Taormina instead of the one before it.
Docking and getting to town
- Catania Cruise Port berths (including Pier 25), 1.2 km to the centre. Run by Global Ports Holding. There is no large terminal building; ships use dedicated cruise berths inside the commercial port. Pier 25, a 405 m berth for the largest ships, reopened as a third cruise berth in July 2025. A new terminal is planned on the central pier. Shuttles from the ship to the port gate depend on the berth and the line; check the daily programme.
Walkable? Yes, about 20 min. From the port gate, walk north along the waterfront road (Via Dusmet) and enter the centre through Porta Uzeda, which opens onto Piazza del Duomo. Expect 15–25 minutes depending on the berth. The route is flat but crosses busy harbour traffic. Paving in the centre is smooth black lava stone that turns slippery in rain; Via Etnea climbs gently north from the Duomo.
Transport
- Walk: Free; 15–25 min to Piazza del Duomo. The simplest option for the centre, the fish market, the Roman theatre and Castello Ursino.
- Regional train to Taormina-Giardini (Trenitalia): €5.50 one way regional; €8.50 Intercity (2026); 36–68 min regional; 36–41 min Intercity. From Catania Centrale station, north of the port along the seafront. Trains run roughly every 30–60 minutes. Taormina-Giardini station is at sea level, so take a local bus up to the Taormina bus terminal (5–15 minutes). Buy in the Trenitalia app or at the machines; a digital regional ticket locks to its train at departure time.
- Etna Trasporti / Interbus coach to Taormina: Check the fare from the city stops at booking.interbus.it; About 70 min from the Via Archimede bus terminal. Line ET07 / IN14 picks up at the Via Archimede bus terminal near Catania Centrale and drops you at the Taormina bus terminal on Via Pirandello, in the upper town, so no extra climb is needed. In August 2026 there were 44 weekday departures; in November about half that.
- AST bus to Etna (Rifugio Sapienza): About €6.60 return, paid on board (2026); About 2 hours each way. One departure a day at 08:15 from Piazza Giovanni XXIII, beside Catania Centrale, arriving about 10:15. The only return leaves Rifugio Sapienza at 16:30, which puts you back in Catania around 18:30, after almost every all-aboard time. A cruise passenger also has to reach the station from the ship before 08:15. It does not run on 25 December, 1 January, 1 May, 15 August or Easter Sunday. Not practical on a cruise day.
- Taxi: Use the meter or agree the fare first; About 10 min to the centre; about an hour to Etna or Taormina. Licensed white taxis wait near the port exit. For Etna or Taormina, a pre-booked driver or a ship tour is the realistic way to fit the trip into a port day.
Return timing
From the centre, start walking back 85 minutes before all-aboard. From Taormina, be on a train leaving Taormina-Giardini at least 2.5 hours before all-aboard. The walk from Piazza del Duomo to the ship takes 15–25 minutes and the ship expects you 60 minutes before all-aboard. From Taormina, allow for the bus down to the station, a train of up to 68 minutes, the walk from Catania Centrale to the port, and 90 minutes on board before sailing. Trains from Taormina are irregular around midday, so check the return in the Trenitalia app before you leave Catania.
If you are running late: In the centre you can always walk back. If you miss a train in Taormina, take the next train or coach and call the port agent number in your daily programme immediately; a taxi from Taormina to Catania takes about an hour.

- 08:40 La Pescheria fish market, entered from Piazza del Duomo or Porta Uzeda. It is at its busiest before 10:00.
- 09:45 Piazza del Duomo: the Elephant Fountain and Catania Cathedral, which holds the relics of Saint Agatha. Shoulders and knees covered.

- 16:30 On board, 60 minutes before all-aboard.
What to see
- Piazza del Duomo and the Elephant Fountain: The city's main square, with the lava-stone elephant carrying an Egyptian obelisk, Catania's symbol. Time: 20 minutes. Cost: Free. Porta Uzeda, at the sea end of the square, is the gate you come through from the port.
- Catania Cathedral (Sant'Agata): Baroque cathedral dedicated to the city's patron saint, rebuilt after the 1693 earthquake. Time: 30 minutes. Cost: Free entry. Cover shoulders and knees. Services can limit visits.
- La Pescheria (fish market): Working fish market spilling down the steps behind Piazza del Duomo, with swordfish, tuna and sea urchins on display. Time: 30–45 minutes. Cost: Free. Open Monday to Saturday, mornings only; closed Sunday. Go before 10:00. The ground is wet, so wear shoes with grip.
- Teatro Antico and Odeon: Roman theatre and small odeon embedded among later houses in the old town. Time: 45 minutes. Cost: €8; €10 combined with the Rotonda and Indirizzo baths (2026). Open daily 09:00–19:00. The two bath sites are closed on Mondays.
- Via dei Crociferi: Short street lined with baroque churches and convents, one of the best-preserved stretches of the rebuilt city. Time: 20 minutes. Cost: Free to walk; San Francesco Borgia church €4 (2026). San Francesco Borgia is open Tuesday to Saturday 09:30–18:00 and Sunday mornings.
- Via Etnea and Villa Bellini: Catania's main shopping street, running from the Duomo towards Etna, and the formal public garden halfway up it. Time: 1 hour. Cost: Free. On a clear day Etna is visible at the top of the street.
- Castello Ursino: 13th-century castle built by Frederick II, now the civic museum, close to the port. Time: 1 hour. Cost: Paid entry; check the price at the desk. Easy to visit at the end of the day because it is on the way back to the ship.
- Taormina: Hill town above the sea with a Greek-Roman theatre facing Etna. Time: Half a day including the train. Cost: Teatro Antico €12 (2026). The theatre is open daily 09:00–19:45. Events can close it at short notice.
Beaches
- Isola Bella (Taormina): Train to Taormina-Giardini, bus up to Taormina, then the cable car down to Mazzarò and a short walk. Allow most of the day Pebble beach. Only for long calls; the return from Taormina needs a wide margin.
Common mistakes
- Planning to reach Etna on the AST bus. It leaves at 08:15 and returns at 16:30, back in Catania around 18:30. Book a ship tour or a private driver.
- Visiting the fish market in the afternoon or on a Sunday. La Pescheria is a morning market, Monday to Saturday. Go first thing.
- Walking up from Taormina-Giardini station. The town is about 200 m above the station. Take the local bus or a taxi.
- Catching the last workable train back from Taormina. Plan for the train before it, and treat the last one as the fallback.
- Buying an Etna cable car ticket on a day of high volcanic activity. Tickets are not refunded if the authorities close the mountain. Call +39 095 387426 before travelling.
Safety and scams
Catania is safe for daytime visitors with normal care. Pickpockets work in crowded places: the fish market, Via Etnea and busy buses. Keep bags closed and in front. Traffic is heavy around the port and on the waterfront, so cross at lights. The lava-stone paving is slippery when wet, and the fish market floor is always wet.
- Pickpocketing in the fish market and on Via Etnea, often while you are photographing a stall. Carry little cash and keep your bag zipped.
- Taxi drivers at the port quoting a high fixed fare for a short ride. Use licensed white taxis and ask for the meter.
- Market stalls without displayed prices charging tourists more. Ask the price before ordering food or seafood.
Accessibility
Catania is a docking port, so there are no tenders. The route from the port to Piazza del Duomo is flat, though it crosses busy roads. Paving in the centre is lava stone, generally even but slippery in rain. The fish market has steps and wet, uneven ground. Via Etnea rises gently. The Etna cable car area is high, cold and on loose volcanic ground. Taormina is steep, with narrow lanes and steps.
If it rains
Stay in the centre. The Cathedral, Castello Ursino's museum and the churches on Via dei Crociferi are all indoors and within a short walk. The Roman theatre is open-air. Skip Etna: visibility at the summit drops to nothing in cloud and the cable car may not run.
Crowds
Catania handled more than 200,000 cruise passengers in 2025, fewer than Palermo or Messina, and since July 2025 it has three cruise berths, so several ships can be in at once. Piazza del Duomo and the fish market are busiest mid-morning. Etna's Rifugio Sapienza area fills with tour coaches from about 10:00. No cruise passenger tax was found for Catania in 2026.
Questions cruise passengers ask
Is Catania cruise port walkable to the city centre?
Yes. Piazza del Duomo is about 1.2 km from the cruise berths, a flat 15–25 minute walk along Via Dusmet and through Porta Uzeda.
Is Catania a tender port?
No. Ships dock at the cruise berths in the Port of Catania, including Pier 25, which reopened for large ships in July 2025.
Can I visit Etna by public transport from the cruise ship?
Not realistically. The AST bus leaves Catania once a day at 08:15 and returns from Rifugio Sapienza at 16:30, arriving around 18:30. Use a ship tour or a private driver.
How much is the Etna cable car?
€54 return to 2,500 m. The Tour 3000 with 4x4 and guide costs €82 (2026). It runs 08:30–16:45, weather and volcano permitting.
How do I get from Catania cruise port to Taormina?
Walk to Catania Centrale and take a regional train to Taormina-Giardini (€5.50, 36–68 minutes, 2026), then a local bus up to the town. Or take the Etna Trasporti coach from the Via Archimede terminal straight to the Taormina bus terminal.
When is the Catania fish market open?
Monday to Saturday, mornings only. It is closed on Sunday.
What can I do in Catania in one day from a cruise ship?
Walk to Piazza del Duomo, see the fish market and the Cathedral, then Via dei Crociferi, the Roman theatre, Via Etnea and Castello Ursino on the way back.
Is Catania safe for cruise passengers?
Yes in daylight with normal care. Watch for pickpockets in the fish market and on Via Etnea, and for traffic around the port.
