Cagliari cruise port guide
Ships dock at Molo Rinascita and a free shuttle runs through the port security area to the gate near Piazza Matteotti, about 800 m from the centre. From there the Marina district is across Via Roma and Castello is a 10–20 minute uphill walk. For Poetto beach take CTM bus PF or PQ from Piazza Matteotti (€1.30 for 90 minutes, 2026), and be back at the shuttle stop at least 90 minutes before all-aboard.
Cagliari is an easy port for an independent day. The terminal is inside the working harbour, but the shuttle drops you at the edge of the lower town, with the bus hub, the railway station and the arcades of Via Roma all within a few minutes. The day is a choice between the old walled quarter of Castello on its limestone hill, the 7 km sweep of Poetto beach by city bus, or the Phoenician and Roman ruins at Nora, about 40 minutes away by road. Castello and Poetto fit together comfortably in one call. October 2026 is the port's busiest month, so expect company.
When to head back to the ship
For a 17:30 all-aboard. Times count back from all-aboard using the travel times and buffers in this guide. Your ship's daily programme always wins. Re-time this to your own all-aboard.

Docking and getting to town
- Cagliari Cruise Port terminal, Molo Rinascita, 0.8 km to the centre. Run by Cagliari Cruise Port (Global Ports Holding). Three berths with 1,040 m of quay, used for transit and turnaround calls. The terminal sits in a security area that pedestrians cannot walk through, so a free shuttle bus takes passengers to the port gate.
- Port gate and shuttle stop near Piazza Matteotti, 0 km to the centre. Where the shuttle drops off; the exact point can vary, so follow the ship's announcement. Piazza Matteotti has the railway station, the CTM city-bus hub and the CTM Point ticket office. Via Roma and the Marina district start here.
Walkable? Partly, about 20 min. You cannot walk out of the terminal itself; take the free shuttle to the port gate. From Piazza Matteotti the Marina district and Via Roma are flat and immediate. Castello sits on a hill: allow 10–20 minutes uphill on steep streets and steps, either by Viale Regina Margherita to Piazza Costituzione and the Bastione di Saint Remy staircase, or through the Marina lanes. A panoramic lift at the Bastione is an alternative to the stairs. Poetto is about 6 km away and needs the bus.

The best view in the city. Time: 30 minutes. Cost: Free (2026). Start from Piazza Costituzione. A panoramic lift is an alternative to the stairs. There is an arts and collectables market on Sunday mornings.

Cost: Free to walk (2026). Go up early before the heat. The Torre dell'Elefante and Torre di San Pancrazio gate towers are worth seeing from outside.
- Cathedral of Santa Maria and the Santuario dei Martiri crypt: Castello's cathedral on Piazza Palazzo. The crypt, cut into the rock under the presbytery and opened in 1618, holds 192 niches with relics of Cagliari martyrs. Time: 45 minutes. Cost: Check on the day. Cover shoulders and knees. Services take priority over visits.
- National Archaeological Museum: Sardinia's main archaeological collection, from prehistory to the Roman period. Time: 1–1.5 hours. Cost: €10 full, €5 reduced (2026). Good shelter on a hot or wet afternoon. Check hours on the museum's official site before you go.

Common mistakes
- Trying to walk out of the terminal. The terminal is in a security area. Use the free shuttle to the port gate near Piazza Matteotti.
- Underestimating the climb to Castello in heat. Go up first thing, use the Bastione di Saint Remy route from Piazza Costituzione or its panoramic lift, and carry water.
- Not buying a bus ticket before boarding. Buy at the CTM Point in Piazza Matteotti, a tobacconist or the CTM BusFinder app. On-board sales cost €0.50 more and are not always available.
- Leaving Poetto too late. Board a bus back by 15:15 for a 17:30 all-aboard and allow for the shuttle queue.
- Planning Nora by public bus. Use a ship excursion, a pre-booked taxi or a hire car; it is about 40 minutes each way by road.
- Expecting to climb the Torre di San Pancrazio. The Ministry of Culture lists it as currently not open to visitors. See it from outside.
Safety and scams
Cagliari is a relaxed city for daytime visitors. Take normal care with bags and phones at busy spots: Piazza Matteotti, crowded buses to Poetto and the beach itself. Do not leave valuables on your towel while swimming. Castello's paving is smooth and slippery, especially when wet, and some streets are steep. In summer the sun is strong; carry water and use sunscreen.
- Unlicensed drivers or touts at the port gate offering transfers or tours. Use licensed taxis from the rank and agree the fare or check the meter before you start.
- Pickpocketing on crowded buses to Poetto and around Piazza Matteotti. Keep bags zipped and in front.
- Restaurant bills with unexpected extras. Ask for the menu with prices before ordering; a cover charge (coperto) is normal in Italy but should be shown on the menu.
Accessibility
The terminal and shuttle are the step-free part of the day. Via Roma, the arcades and Piazza Matteotti are flat. Castello is the hard part: steep slopes, steps and smooth limestone paving. The panoramic lift at the Bastione di Saint Remy is the main alternative to the stairs; check it is running. City buses to Poetto are the practical option for reaching the beach. Nora is uneven ground and needs a car or adapted tour.
If it rains
Spend the morning in the National Archaeological Museum in Castello, then the cathedral and its crypt. The arcades of Via Roma give shelter on the walk back to the port gate. Poetto and Nora are poor choices in heavy rain, and Castello's paving gets slippery.
Crowds
Cagliari expects 181 cruise calls and more than 600,000 passengers in 2026, its busiest year. October is the peak month with 34 calls, and 28 October 2026 has four ships in at once, about 12,000 passengers. On busy days the shuttle queue is the main bottleneck; go early and return early. The Bastione terrace is busiest mid-morning and at sunset. Poetto is long enough to absorb crowds.
