Bodrum cruise port guide
Ships dock at Bodrum Cruise Port in Kumbahçe, about 1.5 km from the centre; the pier takes two large ships at once and there is no routine tender. Bodrum Castle and the bazaar are a flat 20–30 minute walk along the waterfront, or a short sea-shuttle ride when it runs. Start walking back 75 minutes before all-aboard.
Bodrum is a resort town wrapped round two bays, with the Castle of St Peter on the point between them. The cruise pier sits on the eastern bay, so the day starts with a seafront walk rather than a transfer. The castle and its Museum of Underwater Archaeology, the Mausoleum site, the bazaar and the marina all fit into a morning. With more time, dolmuş minibuses run from the central station to the beaches at Gümbet and Bitez. Two things changed recently: state museums now price foreign visitors in euros, and local minibuses no longer take cash.
When to head back to the ship
For a 17:30 all-aboard. Times count back from all-aboard using the travel times and buffers in this guide. Your ship's daily programme always wins. Re-time this to your own all-aboard.
| Leave from | Leave by | How |
|---|
| Bodrum Castle and bazaar | 16:15 (1 h 15 min before all-aboard) | Walk the waterfront, 20–30 min |
| Mausoleum | 15:45 (1 h 45 min before all-aboard) | Walk down 10–15 min, then waterfront |
| Gümbet or Bitez beach | 15:30 (2 h before all-aboard) | Dolmuş to the centre, then walk or taxi |
Where people get Bodrum wrong: Assuming the castle is beside the ship, when the pier is about 1.5 km away and 20–30 minutes each way on foot.
Docking and getting to town
- Bodrum Cruise Port (Kumbahçe pier), 1.5 km to the centre. Operated by Global Ports Holding, which raised its stake to 90% in 2026. A finger pier with two cruise berths of 350 m and 330 m, taking ships up to 350 m long. The terminal has customs, duty-free shops, travel agencies, a café and a restaurant; taxis and car hire wait outside. Fast ferries to Kos also use the pier.
Walkable? Yes, about 25 min. Flat walk west along the Kumbahçe waterfront, past cafés and beach clubs, to the castle and the bazaar behind it: 20–30 minutes. The Mausoleum is a 10–15 minute walk uphill from the harbour through narrow streets. The ancient theatre sits higher up, across the main road on Kıbrıs Şehitler Caddesi.
Transport
- Walk: Free; 20–30 min to the castle. Follow the eastern bay seafront to the castle. Little shade in summer; take water.
- Sea shuttle from the pier to the castle: Ask at the pier; the fare and whether it runs differ by day; Short crossing. When cruise ships are alongside, a shuttle boat links the pier with a landing next to the castle. Check the return times at the landing and do not rely on the last boat.
- Dolmuş (minibus) to Gümbet and Bitez: Distance-based fare; contactless bank card or Muğla Kent Kart, no cash on most lines; Short ride. Leave from the central dolmuş station on Cevat Şakir Caddesi, about 5 minutes' walk from the castle. Gümbet is served by ring lines 2-13 and 2-52; Bitez by lines 2-1A, 2-1B, 2-48 and 2-49. Minibuses stop only at marked stops. Intercity buses use the new terminal at Torba, which you do not need.
- Taxi: ₺150 start plus ₺50 per km, minimum ₺250 (October 2026); 5–10 min pier to centre. Metered. Taxis wait at the terminal and around the harbour. Insist on the meter.
Return timing
Start walking back from the castle 75 minutes before all-aboard (16:15 for a 17:30 all-aboard). From Gümbet or Bitez, leave 2 hours before. The walk from the castle to the pier is 20–30 minutes, plus security at the terminal, which puts you on board about an hour before all-aboard. From the beaches you need a dolmuş back to the central station and then the waterfront walk, or a taxi.
If you are running late: Take a taxi from the rank by the harbour or the central dolmuş station to the cruise port; it is a short metered ride. Call the port agent number in your daily programme if you will be late.

What to see
- Bodrum Castle (Castle of St Peter): Built by the Knights Hospitaller from the early 15th century on the point between Bodrum's two bays, partly from stones of the Mausoleum. Time: 2–3 hours with the museum. Cost: €20 for foreign visitors, charged in lira (October 2026); one ticket covers castle and museum. 08:30–17:30 from 1 October to 1 June, ticket office closing at 17:00; until 22:00 in summer. Hundreds of uneven stone steps; wear shoes with grip.
- Museum of Underwater Archaeology: Inside the castle: finds from ancient wrecks spanning 3,000 years, including the Late Bronze Age Uluburun wreck and one of the world's largest amphora collections. Time: 1–1.5 hours. Cost: Included in the castle ticket. Open since 1964 and the only museum of its kind in Türkiye. Go at opening to beat the tour groups.
- Mausoleum at Halicarnassus: Site of the tomb of Mausolus, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, with a small museum of finds from the Danish excavations. Time: 30–45 minutes. Cost: Pay at the gate. Closed on Mondays; open 08:30–17:30 other days. Mostly foundations and fragments; the models in the exhibition hall make sense of them.
- Ancient Theatre of Halicarnassus: A 4th-century BC theatre on the slope above town, restored in 2002 and still used for concerts, with views to Kos. Time: 30–45 minutes. Cost: Free (2026). 08:30–17:30 from October to May, 09:00–20:00 in summer. It is uphill across the main road; take a taxi up and walk down in heat.
- Bazaar and harbour front: Shopping streets behind the castle and the café-lined harbour. Time: 1 hour. Cost: Free. Sellers can be persistent; a smile and a firm no works.
- Milta Bodrum Marina: The western bay, with yachts, gulets and a long promenade. Time: 30–45 minutes. Cost: Free. Restaurants on the marina front are among the most expensive in town.
- Gümüşlük: A fishing village at the western tip of the peninsula, known for seafood restaurants on the water. Time: Half a day. Cost: Dolmuş fare or taxi. Dolmuş lines 2-14 and 2-45 run there from Bodrum. Only on a long call; leave plenty of time for the return.
Beaches
- Kumbahçe bay: Along the waterfront between the pier and the castle. 0–10 min on foot The town beach: convenient, busy, and not the cleanest water.
- Gümbet: Dolmuş ring line 2-13 or 2-52 from the central station, or taxi. Short ride west over the hill Resort beach with sunbeds and water sports, and a strip of bars behind it.
- Bitez: Dolmuş line 2-1A, 2-1B, 2-48 or 2-49 from the central station, or taxi. Short ride west Calmer bay, popular for paddleboarding and sunbeds.
Common mistakes
- Assuming the castle is beside the ship. The pier is in Kumbahçe, about 1.5 km away. Allow 20–30 minutes each way on foot.
- Arriving at the castle late in the afternoon between October and May. It closes at 17:30 and the ticket office at 17:00. Go first thing.
- Trying to pay the dolmuş driver in cash. Most lines are cashless. Tap a contactless bank card, or buy a Muğla Kent Kart.
- Planning the Mausoleum on a Monday. It is closed on Mondays. Do the castle and the free ancient theatre instead.
- Trying to see Ephesus independently on a short call. It is 2–3 hours each way by road. Use a ship tour with a guaranteed return.
Safety and scams
Bodrum is a low-crime resort town for daytime visitors. Watch belongings in the bazaar and on crowded beaches. The main risks are summer heat, the castle's steep and uneven stone steps, and traffic on the main road when walking up to the theatre.
- Boat-trip and gulet sellers on the harbour quoting a low price that excludes lunch or drinks, or a return time that does not suit your ship. Agree the full price and return time first.
- Seafront restaurants that serve fish without a clear price and overcharge at the end. Ask for the price per kilo or per plate before ordering and check the bill.
- Taxis that do not start the meter. Insist on the meter; the official tariff is ₺150 plus ₺50 per km (October 2026).
- Card machines offering to charge in your home currency. Choose lira.
Accessibility
The seafront walk from the pier to the castle is flat. The castle is the hard part: narrow passages, steep paths and hundreds of uneven steps make most of it unsuitable for wheelchairs. The Mausoleum and theatre are uphill from the harbour. Dolmuş minibuses have high steps; use a taxi instead.
If it rains
Rain is rare in the cruise season. On a wet or very hot day, the indoor wreck halls of the Museum of Underwater Archaeology are the best option, followed by the Mausoleum exhibition hall and the bazaar's shops and cafés.
Crowds
Bodrum expects 119 cruise calls and about 140,000 cruise passengers in 2026, after a record 138,149 on 116 calls in 2025. The pier takes two large ships at once. The castle is busiest mid-morning when ship tours arrive; go at 08:30 opening or after lunch. In July and August the beaches near town fill with resort guests; Bitez is calmer than Gümbet.
