Bermuda (Royal Naval Dockyard) cruise port guide
Ships dock alongside at King's Wharf or Heritage Wharf in the Royal Naval Dockyard, at the island's western tip; there is no tender. The Dockyard is walkable, but Hamilton is about 24 km away, so take the Blue Route ferry (15–25 minutes) and the Orange Route ferry for St George's (about 45 minutes, limited sailings). A 1-day pass for all buses and ferries costs BD$19 (2026). Be on a ferry leaving Hamilton 2 hours before all-aboard and on one leaving St George's 2.5 hours before.
Bermuda's cruise berths sit in the old Royal Navy base at the far western end of the island. The Dockyard itself is compact, with a fort museum, a beach and shops on foot, but the island's two towns and the south-shore beaches all need a ferry, a bus or a taxi. Ferries are the fast way to Hamilton and St George's, and the public bus reaches Horseshoe Bay. The government expected 194 cruise calls between March and November 2026, with more weekend calls than before, and some ships stay overnight. Check your itinerary: a two-day call changes what is realistic.
When to head back to the ship

Where people get Bermuda (Royal Naval Dockyard) wrong: Taking the ferry to St George's without checking the return sailings, of which there are only two or three a day.
Docking and getting to town
- King's Wharf, 24 km to the centre. Main cruise pier in the Dockyard, with its own terminal building selling souvenirs, tourist information and transport passes. Taxi ranks are outside the port. Distance shown is to Hamilton.
- Heritage Wharf, 24 km to the centre. Second Dockyard pier, usually one ship per pier. Same ferry dock, taxis and walking routes. Distance shown is to Hamilton.
Walkable? Partly, about 10 min. Everything in the Dockyard is within walking distance; the area is less than a mile end to end. The National Museum of Bermuda and Snorkel Park Beach are about 10 minutes from the ship, the Clocktower Mall about 10 minutes the other way. Hamilton, St George's and the south-shore beaches are not walkable.
Transport
- Blue Route ferry to Hamilton: Cash BD$3.50–5.00 by zone, exact change, no notes; tokens BD$2.75–4.50 (2026); 15–25 min. Fast ferry from the Dockyard ferry dock, beside the cruise terminals. Check departure times posted at the dock or in the Summer 2026 schedule. Extra sailings on Wednesday evenings in summer for Harbour Nights.
- Orange Route ferry to St George's: Covered by a transportation pass; tokens or cash as above (2026); About 45 min. Direct Dockyard to St George's service restored from 6 April 2026, two or three sailings a day on selected days. First departure from the Dockyard 09:30; last departure from St George's 18:00. Read the return times before you board.
- Transportation pass (bus and ferry): 1 day BD$19, 2 days BD$31.50, 3 days BD$44 adult; child 5–16 BD$9.50 for 1 day (2026); Consecutive days. Unlimited buses and ferries. Sold at the Dockyard Visitor Information Centre (tokens and passes), the Hamilton Ferry Terminal and on the government's Shorelink app.
- Public bus routes 7 and 8: BD$3.50 (3 zones) or BD$5.00 (14 zones) cash; or pass (2026); 45–60 min to Hamilton. Route 7 links the Dockyard with Horseshoe Bay, Gibbs Hill Lighthouse, Elbow Beach, the Botanical Gardens and Hamilton. Pink stop poles mean the bus is heading to Hamilton; blue poles mean away from it. Drivers give no change and do not take notes.
- Taxi: Metered; no verified fare; About 20 min to Horseshoe Bay; about 30 min to Hamilton. Taxi ranks are outside the port. Most taxis seat up to seven, and they can also be booked through the Hitch or BTOA Connect apps. Tourists cannot rent ordinary cars.
Return timing
Be on a ferry leaving Hamilton by 15:30 and on one leaving St George's by 15:00 for a 17:30 all-aboard. Leave Horseshoe Bay by 15:30. The Hamilton ferry takes 15–25 minutes, but you may wait for the next sailing, and you need to be on board 60 minutes before all-aboard. The St George's ferry takes about 45 minutes and runs only two or three times a day, so a missed boat can leave you with no direct sailing in time. The bus from Hamilton takes 45–60 minutes. From Horseshoe Bay a taxi takes about 20 minutes, but buses run on a timetable you need to check.
If you are running late: Take a taxi to the Dockyard; from Hamilton allow about 30 minutes, and longer from St George's at the other end of the island. If you will miss all-aboard, call the port agent number on your ship's daily programme at once.

What to see
- National Museum of Bermuda: The island's largest fort, now a museum of about 500 years of Bermuda history including shipwreck finds. Time: 2 hours. Cost: Not verified; check at the gate. About 10 minutes' walk from the ship. A good choice for the last hours of the day, close to the gangway.
- Royal Naval Dockyard: The former Royal Navy base, used until 1951, with stone storehouses, the Clocktower Mall and the Bermuda Craft Market. Time: 1–2 hours. Cost: Free to walk around. Much of the area closes early, even when ships stay overnight.

Common mistakes
- Assuming Hamilton is walkable from the ship. It is about 24 km away. Take the Blue Route ferry, 15–25 minutes.
- Taking the ferry to St George's without checking the return sailings. There are only two or three a day. Read the timetable at the Dockyard and be on a boat leaving St George's 2.5 hours before all-aboard.
- Trying to pay the bus with a banknote. Buses take exact coins, tokens or passes only. Buy a pass or tokens at the Dockyard first.
- Taking the bus to Hamilton instead of the ferry. The bus takes 45–60 minutes; the ferry 15–25. Use the bus for beaches, not for Hamilton.
- Waiting at the wrong side of the road for a bus. Pink poles are for buses towards Hamilton, blue poles for buses away from it.
Safety and scams
Bermuda is safe for visitors, and the Dockyard is calm by day and night. The main risks are on the roads and in the sea. Some roads near the Dockyard have no pavement, so take a taxi rather than walking to beaches outside it, such as Sea Glass Beach. Swim where lifeguards are on duty and follow their flags.
Accessibility
Ships berth alongside, so there is no tender. The Dockyard is compact and mostly level. Ferries have wheelchair roll-on, roll-off access at the Dockyard, Hamilton, St George's and Rockaway, and the two new ferries introduced in 2026 were described as more accessible. Buses are not fully accessible: they kneel, and some carry folded wheelchairs, but none have ramps. Some taxis are wheelchair accessible; ask when booking.
If it rains
Stay in the Dockyard: the National Museum of Bermuda takes a couple of hours, and the Clocktower Mall and Craft Market are under cover. Hamilton by ferry also works in rain, as the crossing is short and the town is compact. Avoid St George's on a wet single-day call, as the ferry ride is long and sailings are few.
Crowds
The government expected 194 cruise calls from March to November 2026, with more on weekends than in past years. When two ships are in, queues form for passes, taxis and the first ferries. Buy a pass at once or the evening before on an overnight call, and take an early ferry.
