Belize City cruise port guide
Belize City is a tender port: ships anchor offshore and tenders take about 15 minutes to the Fort Street Tourism Village, which sits at the edge of the old Fort George district. The village, the Baron Bliss lighthouse and the Museum of Belize are all within about a 10-minute walk; inland trips need a licensed taxi or tour. Be back at the Tourism Village 90 minutes before all-aboard, because tender queues build in mid-afternoon.
No ship docks at Belize City. The water is too shallow, so every passenger comes ashore by tender at the Fort Street Tourism Village. The village is a fenced shopping and dining complex; step out of the gates and you are in Fort George, part of the historic centre and one of the city's safer areas by day. Most people use the day for one inland trip: the Maya site of Altun Ha, cave tubing at Nohoch Che'en, or a boat to the barrier reef and the cayes. Pick one, because each takes most of a day and the last tender will not wait. A new island cruise port off the city, now called Olo Caye (formerly Stake Bank, then Port Coral), is not due to be finished before 2028.
When to head back to the ship
For a 17:30 all-aboard. Times count back from all-aboard using the travel times and buffers in this guide. Your ship's daily programme always wins. Re-time this to your own all-aboard.

Where people get Belize City wrong: Trying to fit two inland trips, or a late Caye Caulker boat, into one call and missing the last tender.
Docking and getting to town
Tender port. All ships anchor offshore; there are no cruise berths at Belize City. The Belize Tourism Board puts the ride at about 15 minutes ship to shore, landing at the Fort Street Tourism Village. Ship tours usually go ashore first, so independent passengers may need a tender ticket early in the morning. Queues are longest in the last two hours before all-aboard, and the last tender typically leaves 30–45 minutes before all-aboard. Check your ship's last-tender time before going ashore.
- Fort Street Tourism Village (tender landing), 0.5 km to the centre. Tenders land at a single pier inside the village. Shops, bars, restaurants, ATMs dispensing Belize and US dollars, toilets, Wi-Fi and a Belize Tourism Board information desk. Licensed taxis and tour operators wait at and just outside the gates.
Walkable? Partly, about 10 min. The Baron Bliss lighthouse, the Museum of Belize, the water-taxi terminal and the Swing Bridge are all roughly 5–10 minutes on foot from the village gates in the Fort George area. Pavements are uneven and drivers do not yield to pedestrians. Altun Ha, the caves and the reef are not walkable. Do not walk south of Haulover Creek.
Transport
- On foot (Fort George area): Free; 5–10 min to the lighthouse, Museum of Belize or Swing Bridge. Leave the Tourism Village gates and stay in the Fort George district north of Haulover Creek. Go in daylight and in a group if you can, as the tourism board advises.
- Licensed taxi: Unmetered; agree the fare in US$ before setting off (2026); About 1 hr to Altun Ha; a few minutes within the city. Official taxis have green licence plates. There are no set tariffs for cruise passengers, so fix the price, the waiting time and the return time before you get in. For Altun Ha or the caves, hire a driver for the whole trip rather than one way.
- Licensed tour operator from the Tourism Village: Varies by operator (2026); 4–6 hours for Altun Ha or cave tubing. Guides and operators must carry a valid licence and photo ID. Book only with licensed operators in or near the village, and confirm in writing that the tour returns well before your last tender.
- Water taxi to Caye Caulker: Check the current fare at the terminal (2026); About 45 min each way. San Pedro Belize Express runs from a terminal a short walk from the Tourism Village. Fares are regulated by the Belize Port Authority. Check the return departures when you buy, and choose a boat that lands you back at least two hours before all-aboard.
Return timing
Be back inside the Fort Street Tourism Village 90 minutes before all-aboard (16:00 for a 17:30 all-aboard). Tender lines build between about 15:00 and 17:00, and the last tender leaves 30–45 minutes before all-aboard. Inland trips involve an hour or more on the road each way, so add margin for traffic in Belize City. From Caye Caulker, take a water taxi that lands you two hours before all-aboard.
If you are running late: If you are running late, call the port agent number on your daily programme and head straight to the Tourism Village; tenders are the only way back to the ship.

Time: 5–6 hours including about 75 minutes' drive each way and a jungle walk. Cost: Reserve fee plus guided tour; prices vary by operator. Book a licensed operator. Tours depend on good weather and are not suitable for anyone with heart problems.
- Belize Barrier Reef by boat (Goff's Caye or Caye Caulker): Snorkelling on the barrier reef; Goff's Caye is a small sand island about 20 minutes away by boat. Time: 4–7 hours. Beaches
- Goff's Caye: Boat tour from the Tourism Village area About 20 minutes by boat A small sand island on the reef; snorkelling from the beach.
- Caye Caulker: Water taxi from the terminal near the Tourism Village About 45 minutes each way The Lazy Lizard bar sits by The Split. Highest return risk of any trip from this port.
- Old Belize: Taxi About 20 minutes' drive Beach area, train tour and food market on the edge of the city.
Common mistakes
- Trying to combine two inland trips, such as Altun Ha and cave tubing. Choose one. Each is an hour or more each way by road.
- Getting into an unlicensed car or booking with a tout outside the gates. Use green-plate taxis and operators who show a licence and photo ID.
- Arriving at the Tourism Village 30 minutes before all-aboard. Be back 90 minutes before. The last tender leaves 30–45 minutes before all-aboard.
- Wandering south across the Swing Bridge into Southside Belize City. Stay in the Fort George area on foot; use a taxi for anything south of Haulover Creek.
- Bringing camouflage clothing ashore. Leave it on the ship; camouflage is illegal for civilians in Belize.
Safety and scams
The US State Department rates Belize at Level 2 (exercise increased caution) because of crime, and Southside Belize City, from Haulover Creek to Fabers Road, at Level 3 (reconsider travel). The Fort George area around the Tourism Village is calmer and busier with visitors during the day. Stay north of the creek on foot, go in daylight and in company, use licensed green-plate taxis, and keep valuables out of sight. Tap water is not considered safe to drink; carry bottled water. Medical care is limited. Tourism police wear light blue shirts and black hats.
- Unlicensed drivers and tour hawkers outside the Tourism Village gates: use green-plate taxis and operators with a licence and photo ID.
- Unmetered taxi fares raised at the end of the ride: agree the full price, currency and waiting time before you set off.
- Water-taxi overcharging: the Belize Port Authority has asked passengers to report fares above the approved rates.
Accessibility
Tender transfers depend on the swell; ask the ship whether wheelchair users can go ashore that day. The Tourism Village is paved and has accessible toilets. Pavements outside are poorly maintained. Altun Ha has rugged terrain and steep temple steps. Cave tubing involves a jungle walk and is not wheelchair accessible.
If it rains
Heavy rain can cancel cave tubing and rough seas can stop reef trips or even tenders. In light rain, Altun Ha is still possible but the steps are slippery. In town, the Museum of Belize is the main indoor option, with the Tourism Village shops and bars as a fallback.
Crowds
Several ships can anchor on the same day and all their passengers land at one pier. Ship tours get the first tenders, so independent passengers either queue early or wait until the morning rush has gone. Altun Ha is quieter right after it opens at 08:00. Come back to the village before 15:00 to beat the afternoon tender queue.
