Bari cruise port guide
Ships dock at the cruise terminal by the Varco della Vittoria gate; Bari is not a tender port. Bari Vecchia starts at the port gate: the Swabian Castle is about 15 minutes on foot and the Basilica di San Nicola about 10. Stay in town and be back on board 60 minutes before all-aboard; if you take the train to Polignano, make it 90.
Bari is a walk-off port with a real old town at the gate: Bari Vecchia, a knot of lanes around the Basilica di San Nicola, where women still make orecchiette by hand outside their front doors on Strada Arco Basso. The harder question is how far to go. Polignano a Mare is an easy half-day by regional train. Alberobello and Matera are what most passengers want, and they are where DIY plans go wrong: Matera alone is over an hour and a half each way by narrow-gauge train, often with a change, and the line ran on replacement buses for much of summer 2026.
When to head back to the ship
For a 17:30 all-aboard. Times count back from all-aboard using the travel times and buffers in this guide. Your ship's daily programme always wins. Re-time this to your own all-aboard.
| Leave from | Leave by | How |

| Bari Vecchia (Basilica di San Nicola) | 16:20 (1 h 10 min before all-aboard) | Walk to the port gate, about 10 min |

| Polignano a Mare | 15:00 (2 h 30 min before all-aboard) | Regional train 23–28 min, then taxi |
Where people get Bari wrong: Trying to do Matera independently on a normal port day, with two 1 h 36 min train legs and frequent replacement buses.
Docking and getting to town
- Bari cruise terminal (Stazione Marittima), entrance at Varco della Vittoria, 0.8 km to the centre. A multi-purpose terminal of over 3,500 m² that can handle more than one ship, beside the historic centre. Cruise berths take ships up to 330 m. Ferries to Greece and Albania use the same port, so expect lorries and foot traffic at the gate. A new cruise terminal is planned for 2028; the current building is in use in 2026.
Walkable? Yes, about 10 min. Leave by the Varco della Vittoria gate. The Swabian Castle and the edge of Bari Vecchia are in front of you. The Basilica di San Nicola is about 10 minutes' walk and the castle about 15, according to the port. The old town is flat, with polished limestone paving that gets slippery when wet. Bari Centrale station, for trains to Polignano, Alberobello and Matera, is about 2 km from the port: a 25-minute walk through the Murat district or about 15 minutes by taxi.
Transport
- On foot: Free; 10 min to the Basilica di San Nicola. Everything in Bari Vecchia and the seafront is walkable. This covers a full day in the city.
- Taxi: Metered; check the fare before you set off; About 15 min from the port to Bari Centrale. Useful if you are catching a train and do not want the 2 km walk, especially on the way back.
- Trenitalia regional train to Polignano a Mare: From about €3 one way (2026, per Omio); 23–28 min on regional trains; 17 min on the occasional Intercity. From Bari Centrale to Polignano a Mare station. Regional trains run through the day; buy the ticket before boarding and validate paper tickets. Check the return times before you leave Bari.
- Ferrovie Appulo Lucane (FAL) train to Matera: From about €6 one way (2026, per Omio); About 1 h 36 min each way, usually with one change at Altamura. Leaves from the FAL platforms at Bari Centrale and arrives at Matera Sud or Matera Centrale. In 2026 the Bari–Gravina section was replaced by buses from 22 June to 30 August, leaving 10 minutes earlier from the bus terminal on Via Capruzzi, and the Altamura–Matera section was on buses for a period from November 2025. Check the FAL service notices the day before.
- Ferrovie del Sud Est (FSE) train to Alberobello: Check the FSE fare on the day; Check the FSE timetable. Alberobello is on the FSE line from Bari Centrale towards Martina Franca, electrified in 2023. FSE runs its own trains and frequently substitutes buses. Do not rely on it without a timetable for your exact date.
- Ship excursion: Varies by line; check your cruise planner; Half-day to full-day. MSC, among others, sells tours to Matera, to Alberobello and to the Castellana Caves with Polignano a Mare. For Matera and Alberobello this is the safe choice.
Return timing
In Bari: be back at the gate 60 minutes before all-aboard. From Polignano: be on a train that reaches Bari Centrale at least 2 hours before all-aboard (by 15:30 for a 17:30 all-aboard). Matera and Alberobello: only with the ship's tour. From the basilica it is 10 minutes to the gate. From Bari Centrale allow 15 minutes by taxi or 25 on foot, plus port security, so a train that lands at 15:30 puts you on board around 16:00, 90 minutes before all-aboard. For Matera, two 1 h 36 min train legs plus a change, plus at least 4 hours to see the Sassi, leave no margin on a 9-hour call, and a cancelled train or a replacement bus breaks the plan. The ship will not wait for independent travellers.
If you are running late: In Bari, walk or take a taxi from the old town; it is a few minutes. If a Polignano train is cancelled, take the next train or a taxi straight to the port gate, agreeing the fare first. Call the port agent number in your daily programme as soon as you know you will be late.
A day in Bari (all-aboard 17:30)

- 08:45 Basilica di San Nicola and the crypt with the saint's tomb (free, about 45 minutes).
- 09:30 Cathedral of San Sabino and the lanes around it, then focaccia at Panificio Fiore on Strada Palazzo di Città.
- 10:15 Piazza Mercantile and Piazza del Ferrarese, then the seafront by the Molo San Nicola fish market.
- 11:00 Walk through the Murat district along Via Sparano to Bari Centrale (about 25 minutes), or take a taxi.

What to see
- Basilica di San Nicola: Romanesque pilgrimage church holding the relics of St Nicholas, brought from Myra in 1087. Orthodox and Catholic pilgrims share it. Time: 45 minutes. Cost: Free (2026). Open from 07:00 daily, until 20:30 Monday to Saturday and 22:00 on Sundays. Go down to the crypt for the tomb. Dress as for any working church and keep quiet during services.
- Strada Arco Basso (the orecchiette street): Women make orecchiette by hand at tables outside their homes and sell bags of fresh pasta. Time: 20 minutes. Cost: Free to watch. Go in the morning. Since 2025 the city's rules say only handmade pasta may be sold and the flour's origin must be stated. Ask before taking close-up photos.
- Swabian Castle (Castello Svevo): Norman-Swabian fortress rebuilt by Frederick II, with a moat and exhibitions inside, on the edge of the old town by the port. Time: 1 hour. Cost: €10, €2 reduced (2026). It is on your way to and from the ship, so you can leave it for the end of the day.
- Cathedral of San Sabino: Bari's Romanesque cathedral, a few minutes from the basilica, quieter and plainer inside. Time: 20–30 minutes. Cost: Check on the day. Combine with the basilica on one loop of Bari Vecchia.
- Piazza Mercantile and Piazza del Ferrarese: The two main squares of the old town, on the edge of the seafront, with the old column of justice. Time: 20 minutes. Cost: Free. Good place to start or end the old-town loop and find a bar.
- Molo San Nicola fish market and Lungomare: Fishermen sell and serve raw seafood on the quay near the Teatro Margherita; the seafront promenade runs south from here. Time: 30–60 minutes. Cost: Free to look. Raw shellfish is a local habit; skip it if you are not used to it before a sea day.
- Murat district and Via Sparano: The 19th-century grid of the new town, with the main shopping street leading to Bari Centrale. Time: 30 minutes. Cost: Free. It is your walking route to the station if you go to Polignano.
- Polignano a Mare: Clifftop old town above Lama Monachile cove, 23–28 minutes by regional train. Time: Half a day including travel. Cost: Return regional train from about €6 (2026, per Omio). Check return trains before you leave Bari and aim to be back at Bari Centrale 2 hours before all-aboard.
Beaches
- Lama Monachile (Cala Porto), Polignano a Mare: Regional train to Polignano a Mare, then walk into the old town 23–28 min by train from Bari Centrale, plus the walk A small pebble cove between cliffs, packed in summer. More for the view than for a beach afternoon.
- Pane e Pomodoro, Bari: South-east along the seafront promenade from the old town, or by taxi A long walk along the Lungomare; a taxi is quicker Bari's main city beach. Practical for a swim, not scenic.
Common mistakes
- Trying to do Matera independently on a normal port day. It is about 1 h 36 min each way by FAL train, usually with a change, and the line switches to buses for works. Book the ship tour.
- Assuming the Alberobello train will run as timetabled. FSE often substitutes buses. Check the timetable for your date, or take the ship tour.
- Walking to Bari Centrale at the last minute. It is 2 km from the port. Take a taxi on the way back and plan to land at Bari Centrale 2 hours before all-aboard.
- Visiting Strada Arco Basso in the afternoon. The pasta makers work in the morning. Go there first.
- Taking a ship shuttle or taxi to the old town. Bari Vecchia is a 10-minute walk from the gate.
Safety and scams
Bari Vecchia had a reputation for crime for decades, and many visitors once avoided it. That has changed: in daytime the old town is busy with residents, pilgrims and tourists, and cruise passengers walk it without problems. Use normal care: keep phones and bags secure in crowded lanes, around the basilica and on trains to Polignano. The port gate area is busy with ferry traffic and lorries; use the marked pedestrian routes. The limestone paving is slippery after rain.
- Industrial orecchiette sold as handmade. A 2024 investigation and later sanctions targeted pasta sellers in Bari Vecchia; buy from someone you can see making it.
- Card terminals and ATMs offering to charge in your home currency (dynamic currency conversion). Always choose euros.
- Pickpocketing in crowded spots such as the basilica square and busy regional trains. Keep bags zipped and in front.
Accessibility
The walk from the port gate into Bari Vecchia is flat. The old town lanes are narrow and paved with smooth limestone, which is slippery when wet, but there are no major hills. The basilica's main floor is at street level; the crypt is down steps. Bari Centrale is 2 km away, so wheelchair users going to Polignano should take a taxi to the station. Matera's Sassi are steep, stepped and hard going for anyone with limited mobility, which is another reason to choose a ship tour that includes coach access.
If it rains
Stay in Bari. The Basilica di San Nicola and its crypt, the Cathedral of San Sabino and the Swabian Castle are all under cover and within a short walk of the ship. Skip Polignano, whose clifftop viewpoints are exposed, and take care on the wet stone paving.
Crowds
Bari is one of the busiest cruise ports in the Adriatic, and in high season it shares the harbour with ferries to Greece and Albania. No cruise visitor cap or passenger fee has been announced for 2026. The basilica is busiest mid-morning when tour groups arrive and on St Nicholas feast days in May and on 6 December. Strada Arco Basso jams around 10:00–11:00; go early. Polignano is crowded on summer weekends; a weekday is easier.
