Bridgetown cruise port guide
Ships dock at the Deep Water Harbour and passengers pass through the Bridgetown Cruise Terminal; the centre of Bridgetown is about a 20-minute walk along the seaside path, Trevor's Way. A taxi to the city centre is US$9.50 (Bds$19) and to Harrison's Cave US$32.50 (Bds$65) on the government-approved list (2023 rates); buses cost Bds$3.50 in exact cash. Be back on board 60 minutes before all-aboard, and leave Harrison's Cave at least 2.5 hours before.
Barbados is a docking port, and one of the easier ones in the Caribbean to do without a tour. The cruise terminal sits in the commercial harbour about a mile west of Bridgetown, whose historic centre and Garrison are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Brandons and Brighton beaches are 20 minutes' walk north; Carlisle Bay, with Brownes and Pebbles beaches, is a short taxi ride south past the city. Taxis have no meters, so the main skill here is agreeing the fare, and the currency, before you get in.

Docking and getting to town
- Bridgetown Cruise Terminal, Deep Water Harbour, 1.6 km to the centre. All cruise ships berth in the Deep Water Harbour. A free shuttle runs between the ship and the terminal when the berth is not alongside it. The terminal has more than 60 shops, bars, free Wi-Fi, a Visitor Information Centre with free maps, a post office and a Tour Departure Area. The taxi dispatch centre is just outside.
Walkable? Yes, about 20 min. Leave by the port's main gate and follow Trevor's Way, a flat seaside footpath, past the Pelican Craft Centre into the historic centre: about 20–25 minutes. Brandons and Brighton beaches are about 20 minutes north. Brownes Beach and Carlisle Bay are about 2.1 miles (40 minutes) south through town, so most people take a taxi. There is little shade; carry water.
Transport
- Walk via Trevor's Way: Free; 20–25 min to central Bridgetown. Out of the main gate, follow the seaside path past the Pelican Craft Centre. Continue through town for Carlisle Bay, about 40 minutes in total.
- Taxi: US$9.50 / Bds$19 to the city centre; US$12.50 / Bds$25 to the Garrison; US$32.50 / Bds$65 to Harrison's Cave (2023 rates, listed 2026); About 5 min to town. About 255 authorised seaport taxis work the port, marked with an 'Authorized Seaport Taxi' sticker, and are dispatched from the Taxi Dispatch Centre outside the terminal. Taxis have no meters. Fares come from the government-approved list; confirm before you set off whether the price is per car or per person, and in US or Barbados dollars. Weekday rush hours slow traffic.
- Transport Board bus: Bds$3.50 per trip (2026); Varies by route. Blue government buses. Put the exact fare in the farebox: no change is given, and banknotes must be unfolded and shown to the driver. A cashless system is being rolled out in phases. Routes start from Bridgetown's terminals; use the Transport Board route finder to plan. The most common first departure is 06:00.
- Minibus and ZR van: Minibus Bds$3.50 per trip (2026); Varies by route. Privately run. Minibuses are yellow with a blue stripe and charge the same as Transport Board buses. ZR vans are white with a maroon stripe and 'ZR' on the plate, and run numbered routes. Both are fast, crowded and loud. Check the destination on the windscreen and carry small cash.
- Rental car: Car Rental Levy US$5 per day on top of the hire; —. Visitors no longer need a temporary driving permit (dropped in October 2025). Traffic in and around Bridgetown is slow at rush hour.
Return timing
Be back on board 60 minutes before all-aboard. Leave Carlisle Bay 90 minutes before all-aboard and Harrison's Cave 2.5 hours before (15:00 for a 17:30 all-aboard). From central Bridgetown the walk back is 20–25 minutes. Carlisle Bay is a short drive but afternoon traffic through town can be slow, and the port warns of weekday rush-hour delays. Harrison's Cave is in central St Thomas, and the drive back runs through Bridgetown's traffic.
If you are running late: Ask any taxi driver for the 'harbour' or 'cruise terminal'; agree the fare first. From Carlisle Bay you can walk back in about 40 minutes. If you will be late, call the port agent number in your daily programme. Barbados Port Inc.: +1 246 434 6100.

Common mistakes
- Getting in a taxi without agreeing the price. Taxis have no meters. Agree the fare, whether it is per car or per person, and the currency before you set off.
- Paying a bus fare with a large note. The farebox gives no change. Carry Bds$3.50 in coins or unfolded small notes.
- Confusing US and Barbados dollars. Bds$2 equals US$1. A price of '20 dollars' can mean either; ask which.
- Walking to Carlisle Bay in the midday heat. It is about 40 minutes with little shade. Take a taxi one way and walk the other in the cooler morning.
- Cutting the return from Harrison's Cave fine. Afternoon traffic through Bridgetown can be slow. Leave the cave 2.5 hours before all-aboard.
Safety and scams
The US State Department rates Barbados Level 1, 'exercise normal precautions' (10 April 2026). Petty crime such as bag snatching and pickpocketing is the main risk in tourist areas, and the advisory asks for extra care in downtown Bridgetown at night, on party cruises and at crowded events such as Crop Over. Do not leave valuables on the beach while swimming, and avoid walking alone on beaches or in quiet areas. Water activities are not tightly regulated: swim within your limits, never alone, and watch for boats and jet skis close to shore. Daytime Bridgetown and Carlisle Bay are busy and generally relaxed for cruise visitors.
- Taxi fares quoted in Barbados dollars and then charged in US dollars, or per person instead of per car. Confirm both before you get in, and use taxis with the 'Authorized Seaport Taxi' sticker.
- Drinks left unattended at beach bars and on party cruises. The US State Department advises keeping your drink with you.
- Bags and phones left on the sand while swimming at Carlisle Bay. Use the lockers at the beach clubs.
- Unregulated boat and jet-ski operators offering trips from the beach. The US State Department notes that safety inspections are rare; book with an established operator.
Accessibility
The cruise terminal is accessible, and the port runs wheelchair-accessible shuttle units between ship and terminal. Trevor's Way into Bridgetown is flat. Pavements in town are narrow and kerbs high in places. Buses and ZR vans have steps and are crowded; a taxi is the practical choice, and tour operators can arrange adapted transport. Beaches have no boardwalks to the water.
If it rains
Harrison's Cave is underground and runs in rain, though the drive is slower. The Barbados Museum at the Garrison and the terminal's own shops and bars are indoors. Showers are usually short; hurricane season runs June to November, when ship schedules can change at short notice.
Crowds
Barbados expected around 850,000 cruise passengers in the 2025/26 season. Carlisle Bay's beach clubs fill by late morning on multi-ship days; arrive early or try Brandons. Ship excursions use the same Harrison's Cave tram tours, so independent visitors should book ahead. Bridgetown traffic is worst at weekday rush hours.
