Alicante cruise port guide
Ships dock at the cruise terminal on the Muelle de Levante; there is no tender. A free shuttle runs to Plaza Puerta del Mar, or the walk to the Explanada takes about 15–25 minutes on the flat. Start back 75 minutes before all-aboard.
Alicante is a compact port day. The ship ties up inside the harbour, the palm-lined Explanada starts where the port ends, and Santa Bárbara Castle sits on the rock directly above the city beach. Entry to the castle grounds is free, and a lift cut into the hill saves the climb for €2.70. The archaeology museum, the old quarter of Santa Cruz and Postiguet beach are all within a short walk or tram ride, so you can fit history, lunch and a swim into one call without a coach.
When to head back to the ship

Common mistakes
- Climbing to the castle from the old town in the midday heat. Take the lift up from Postiguet or the CSB bus, and walk down through Santa Cruz.
- Planning the MARQ on a Monday. It is closed on Mondays. Spend the time at the castle and the beach.
- Leaving the Mercado Central until after lunch. It closes at 14:30 on weekdays and 15:00 on Saturdays. Go in the morning.
- Booking Tabarca on a short call. The boat takes about an hour each way. Only go with a long call and a fixed return sailing well inside your margin.
- Assuming the castle lift always runs. It closes for maintenance from time to time. Check the city tourism site and have the CSB bus or a taxi as a backup.
Safety and scams
Alicante is a safe city for day visitors. Pickpockets target crowds on the Explanada, at Postiguet beach and on the tram, and bags left on the sand are an easy target. Keep valuables zipped and in front. In summer, heat on the castle hill is the main practical risk; carry water.
- Pickpockets working crowds on the Explanada and at Postiguet. Keep phones out of back pockets and never leave bags unattended on the beach.
- Card terminals and ATMs offering to charge you in your home currency (dynamic currency conversion). Always choose to pay in euros.
- Unofficial drivers offering rides at the port. Use the licensed taxi rank at the terminal or a rank in town.
Accessibility
The route from the terminal to the Explanada is flat, and the free shuttle and the terminal staff can help with wheelchairs. The castle lift avoids the steep climb to Santa Bárbara Castle, and vehicle access to the castle is allowed for people with reduced mobility. Postiguet has an accessible walkway at access 13 in summer and at access 7 the rest of the year, with bathing assistance in summer. The Barrio de Santa Cruz is steep with many steps.
If it rains
The MARQ is the best indoor choice, with MUSA inside the castle as a second. The Mercado Central is covered. The castle is exposed to the weather and occasionally closes in strong wind or rain.
Crowds
Alicante has well under the cruise traffic of Málaga or Barcelona, but days with two or more ships fill the Explanada and the castle lift queue. Ride the lift at 10:00 when the castle opens, or take the CSB bus. Postiguet is busiest in summer afternoons. There is no tourist tax: the Valencian regional tax was repealed in November 2023 before it ever applied.
