Ålesund cruise port guide
Ships dock at Storneskaia, Stornespiren or Prestebrygga, about 200 m from the centre, so you walk straight into town. The Aksla viewpoint at Fjellstua is 418 steps up from the town park (30–40 minutes), or a stop on the 70-minute city train from the terminal. Everything central is within 20 minutes of the ship: start back 45 minutes before you need to be on board.
Ålesund was rebuilt in Art Nouveau style after a fire in 1904, and the whole centre sits on islands a few minutes from the cruise quays. The day has a simple shape: climb the 418 steps of Aksla to Fjellstua for the view over the islands and the mountains, walk the turrets and façades around Brosundet, and add the Art Nouveau Centre or the Atlantic Sea Park aquarium. Ålesund is one of Norway's busiest cruise ports. The municipality expects around 36 days in 2026 with more than 8,000 cruise passengers in town, most of them Wednesdays, so the steps and Fjellstua get crowded by mid-morning on those days.
When to head back to the ship
For a 17:00 all-aboard. Times count back from all-aboard using the travel times and buffers in this guide. Your ship's daily programme always wins. Re-time this to your own all-aboard.

Where people get Ålesund wrong: Climbing Aksla late morning on a busy multi-ship day, when the steps and Fjellstua are crowded and the descent takes longer.
Docking and getting to town
- Stornespiren / Prestebrygga, 0.2 km to the centre. The main cruise berths on the south side of the centre, about 200 m from the city centre according to Cruise Norway. The city train and the hop-on hop-off bus start at the cruise terminal. Toilets are in the pier area.
- Storneskaia, 0.2 km to the centre. Third berth, close to the other two and to the centre. Check the Ålesund havn port call list or your daily programme for which quay your ship uses.
Walkable? Yes, about 20 min. The centre starts about 200 m from the quays, and most sights, including the Art Nouveau Centre, Brosundet and the foot of the Aksla steps in the town park, are within a 20-minute walk. The streets are hilly and partly cobbled, so wear comfortable shoes. The tourist information office at Skateflukaia 6 is a short walk from the quay. The Atlantic Sea Park aquarium is just over 3 km away, too far for most people to walk both ways.
Transport
- Walk: Free; Up to 20 min to central sights. The easiest way to see Ålesund. The Aksla steps start in the town park (Byparken). Free accessible public toilets are at Lorkenestorget and at Kongensgate 13, under Paviljongen, open 07:00–18:00.
- City train (Bytoget): 320 kr adult online, 350 kr cash; child 150 kr online; family (2+2) 750 kr (2026); About 70 min round trip. Starts and ends at the cruise terminal and runs every 30 minutes when ships are in port. The route climbs to Fjellstua with a 10–15 minute stop at the viewpoint, then returns through the town park, Storgata, past the Art Nouveau Centre and Ålesund church. Buy online to save 30 kr.
- Hop-on hop-off bus: 24-hour ticket; check the price at the terminal; Every 20 min, 09:00–16:00. Runs from the cruise terminal on the busiest cruise days from April to October, with nine stops and an audio guide in several languages. It also stops at the Atlantic Sea Park.
- FRAM local bus (line 1 to the aquarium): 50 kr adult single, 1 zone; 25 kr child 6–17 and over-67s; 20 kr surcharge for adults buying on board (2026); Short ride plus a 10–15 min walk. Line 1 runs from the centre towards Hessa. Get off at Tuenesvegen for the Atlantic Sea Park. A 1-zone ticket is valid for 1 hour 30 minutes and allows a return trip within the zone if time remains. Buy in the FRAM app to avoid the on-board surcharge, and check times on frammr.no.
- Aquarium bus (Ålesund Adventure): 456 kr adult, 223 kr child 3–15 (2026); About 2 hours for the tour. Departs from the cruise quay every half hour from 08:45 to 14:45 on cruise days, stopping at the tourist information at Skateflukaia. Check what the price covers when you book.
- Taxi: No fixed fares; ask for the price before you set off; —. Taxis usually wait at the quay when ships are in port and can be booked ahead. A taxi can drive up the road to Fjellstua (Fjelltunveien) if you do not want to climb the steps.
Return timing
Start walking back 45 minutes before you must be on board (for a 17:00 all-aboard, leave the centre by 15:15 to be on board by 16:00). From the Atlantic Sea Park, leave at least 75 minutes before you must be on board. The walk from the centre to the quay is under 20 minutes, but the descent from Fjellstua on the steps takes time on a crowded day, and line 1 back from the aquarium involves a 10–15 minute walk to the stop plus the ride.
If you are running late: Central Ålesund is small, so walk briskly back along the harbour. Taxis wait at the quay on cruise days, and the city train ends at the cruise terminal. Call the port agent number in your daily programme if you are delayed.

Common mistakes
- Climbing Aksla at 11:00 on a Wednesday with several ships in port. Go straight from the ship to the steps, or leave the viewpoint until mid-afternoon.
- Paying cash for the city train. Book online: 320 kr instead of 350 kr per adult.
- Planning the Art Nouveau Centre on a Monday. It opens Tuesday to Sunday only. On a Monday, swap in the Atlantic Sea Park or Sunnmøre Museum.
- Walking to the Atlantic Sea Park and back. It is over 3 km each way. Take bus line 1 to Tuenesvegen and use the FRAM app to avoid the 20 kr on-board surcharge.
- Arriving at a busy restaurant at noon without a booking. On big cruise days, book a table in advance or eat early.
Safety and scams
Ålesund is a small, low-crime town and the centre is safe by day. The practical risks are the 418 steps up Aksla, which are steep and can be slippery when wet, cobbled and hilly streets, and quick weather changes. Watch your bags in crowds at Fjellstua and Brosundet on busy cruise days. In an emergency call 112 (police), 113 (ambulance) or 110 (fire).
- Taxis with no agreed fare: there are no fixed fares from the quay. Ask for the price before you set off.
- Paying the on-board surcharge on FRAM buses: adults pay 20 kr more for a single bought from the driver. Buy in the FRAM app instead.
- Pickpocketing in dense crowds at the Fjellstua viewpoint and around Brosundet on multi-ship days. Keep bags zipped and in front.
Accessibility
The berths are close to the centre, but Ålesund's streets are hilly and partly cobbled. The 418 steps to Fjellstua are not an option for wheelchair users; take a taxi or the road up via Fjelltunveien instead. Both free public toilets in the centre (Lorkenestorget and Kongensgate 13) are wheelchair accessible. At the Art Nouveau Centre the main entrance is not accessible, but a back entrance and a staff-operated stairlift reach all floors; KUBE has a lift to every floor. At Sunnmøre Museum the main building, boat halls and café are accessible, the historic houses are not.
If it rains
The Atlantic Sea Park is the main indoor option and the best choice with children. The Art Nouveau Centre and KUBE (Tuesday to Sunday, 11:00–16:00) are a short walk from the ship, with Apotekern Kafe inside. Sunnmøre Museum's boat halls and indoor exhibitions work in rain, though the open-air houses do not. Skip Fjellstua in low cloud: you will see little from the top.
Crowds
Ålesund receives around 600,000–650,000 cruise passengers a year, and the municipality estimated about 807,000 passenger places for 2026. It expects around 36 days in 2026 with more than 8,000 cruise passengers in town, and 70–85% of those days fall on a Wednesday. There is no daily cruise cap: a capacity analysis for the municipality in February 2026 did not recommend a fixed number. On busy days the steps to Aksla, Fjellstua and Brosundet fill from mid-morning. Climb early and visit museums in the middle of the day. No cruise passenger fee applies in 2026: the government has proposed an optional municipal cruise fee of 100 kr per passenger per day from 1 January 2027.
Questions cruise passengers ask

Is Ålesund a tender port?
Usually not. Ships dock at Storneskaia, Stornespiren or Prestebrygga in the centre.
How many steps are there up Aksla to Fjellstua?
418, starting in the town park. Allow 30–40 minutes up. The city train and taxis use the road if you prefer not to climb.
How much is the Ålesund city train in 2026?
320 kr per adult online or 350 kr in cash, 150 kr per child online, and 750 kr for a family of two adults and two children. The loop takes about 70 minutes and stops at Fjellstua.
How do I get from Ålesund cruise port to the Atlantic Sea Park?
Take FRAM bus line 1 from the centre towards Hessa, get off at Tuenesvegen and walk 10–15 minutes (50 kr single, 2026). On cruise days the hop-on hop-off bus and an Ålesund Adventure bus from the quay also go there.
