St Maarten Cruise Port to Philipsburg and Front Street: Walk, Water Taxi or Taxi
Quick answer: Ships dock at the Dr. A.C. Wathey Cruise and Cargo Facility at Point Blanche, on the east side of Great Bay, so there is no tender. Philipsburg and Front Street are 15–30 minutes on foot around the bay, or about 10–15 minutes by water taxi. A taxi to Maho Beach is US$25 for one or two people on the government fare table (2026). Start back from Front Street 90 minutes before all-aboard, and leave Maho 2 hours before it.
Where the cruise ships dock
All cruise ships dock at the Dr. A.C. Wathey Cruise and Cargo Facility at Point Blanche, Piers 1 and 2. Pier 2 is 445 m long and takes two ships of over 220,000 gross tons. St Maarten is not a tender port.
You walk off the ship into Harbour Point Village. It has the taxi stand, tour pick-up points, shops and bars. Note where the taxi stand is; you may want it on the way back.
Walking to Philipsburg
- ·Cost: free.
- ·Time: the port says 15 minutes to Philipsburg. Walkers' reports give 20–30 minutes to the Courthouse in the middle of Front Street.
- ·Route: leave the port gates and turn left along the road around the bay. Pass the car park, enter the pedestrian mall, then cross onto the boardwalk. The boardwalk runs along Great Bay beach; Front Street is one block inland.
The route is flat but hot and partly unshaded. Carry water and go early. Front Street is busiest from mid-morning on multi-ship days.
Water taxi across Great Bay
Boats run regularly between the cruise pier and the Philipsburg waterfront.
- ·Cost: check the fare at the booth by the ships. Tickets are sold one way or return.
- ·Time: about 10–15 minutes.
- ·Stops: Captain Hodge Wharf, Walter Williams Jetty and Bobby's Marina, near the end of Great Bay beach.
This is the easy option on a hot day, and a good one for the return if your feet are done. Wheelchair users should ask at the booth whether boarding is possible, as it depends on the boat and the swell.
Taxi to Maho Beach
Taxis are unmetered. Fares on the Dutch side are set by government and published by the St. Maarten Tourist Bureau.
| Group size | Port to Maho (2026) | Maho to port (2026) |
|---|---|---|
| 1–2 people | US$25 total | US$25 total |
| 3–5 people | US$9 each | US$10 each |
| 6 or more | US$8 each | US$9 each |
- ·Time: about 25 minutes, longer on multi-ship days.
- ·Where to board: the taxi stand in Harbour Point Village.
- ·How to pay: cash preferred.
- ·Extras: one checked bag per person is included. Waiting costs US$5 per 15 minutes after the first 5 minutes. A 25% surcharge applies 22:00–06:00 and on public holidays.
From Philipsburg, the same table gives US$20 for two to Maho. Confirm whether a quoted price is per person or for the car before you set off.
Taxi to Marigot or Orient Bay
There are no border formalities between the Dutch and French sides. Marigot is roughly 30 minutes by taxi. Travel time to Orient Bay depends on traffic. French-side fares are in a separate published list, so agree the price with the driver at the Harbour Point stand before you leave.
Public minibus
Vans with BUS plates and a route sign in the window run between towns for US$2 or less. Philipsburg to Marigot is US$2 (2026). Flag one on the correct side of the road, say "Stop for me please", and pay the driver when you get off, ideally with exact change.
Service runs from before 07:00 to about 20:00, but drivers set their own hours and there is no timetable. Do not use the minibus to get back to the ship.
Comparing the options
| Option | Cost (2026) | Time | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Walk | Free | 15–30 min | Front Street, Great Bay beach | Heat, little shade |
| Water taxi | Check at the booth | About 10–15 min | Front Street, Bobby's Marina end of the beach | Wheelchair boarding depends on the boat |
| Taxi to Maho | US$25 for 1–2 people | About 25 min | Maho Beach | Unmetered; agree the total first |
| Taxi to the French side | Agree the fare first | Marigot roughly 30 min | Marigot, Orient Bay | Traffic on multi-ship days |
| Minibus | US$2 or less | Varies | Cheap trips out | No timetable; not for the return |
When to head back
Be back on board 60 minutes before all-aboard. The walk back is easy, but the routes from Maho and the French side pass through Philipsburg and Simpson Bay traffic. With several ships in, taxis and roads fill at the same time in the afternoon.
| All-aboard | Leave Front Street | Leave Maho Beach | Leave Marigot or Orient Bay |
|---|---|---|---|
| 16:00 | 14:30 | 14:00 | 13:30 |
| 17:00 | 15:30 | 15:00 | 14:30 |
| 17:30 | 16:00 | 15:30 | 15:00 |
If you are running late from Front Street, take a taxi or the water taxi to the pier. Taxis often wait in front of the Courthouse. From further out, take a taxi straight to the cruise port and agree the fare first. If you will miss all-aboard, call the port agent number on your daily programme at once.
Common mistakes
- ·Getting into a taxi without confirming the fare. Taxis are unmetered. Check the Tourist Bureau's fare table and agree the total before setting off.
- ·Leaving Maho or Orient Bay an hour before all-aboard. Leave Maho 2 hours before and the French side 2.5 hours before.
- ·Relying on the minibus to get back. Buses have no timetable. Use a taxi or the water taxi.
- ·Standing at the Maho airport fence for a take-off. Jet blast has caused injuries and killed a tourist in 2017. Watch from further back on the sand.
- ·Paying in dollars on the French side without checking the rate. Marigot prices are in euros; dollar or card payments often work out 15–20% dearer.
