Katakolon Cruise Port to Ancient Olympia: Train, Bus or Taxi
Quick answer: Ships dock right next to Katakolo village, so you walk ashore. Ancient Olympia is about 34 km inland. The Hellenic Train costs €10 return (2026), takes 45–52 minutes via Pyrgos and runs Monday to Saturday only, with one useful morning departure and one early-afternoon return. A private coach from the port gate takes about 35 minutes; a taxi takes 30–45 minutes. One €20 ticket covers the site and museums (2026). If you miss the return train, leave Olympia by taxi no later than 15:00 for a 17:30 all-aboard.
Where the cruise ships dock
Katakolon is not a tender port. Large ships dock at the Katakolo cruise pier, which has a small two-storey terminal building and a duty-free shop. The village waterfront starts at the port gate, about 0.3 km from the pier.
Taxis, car hire desks and coach sellers wait by the gate. Katakolo railway station is about 5 minutes' walk along the main road.
Walking into Katakolo village
The village is flat and small, about three blocks deep: 5–10 minutes on foot to the waterfront tavernas, free. Olympia, 34 km away, needs the train, a coach or a taxi.
The train to Olympia
The Hellenic Train runs Katakolo–Pyrgos–Olympia. It is the cheapest way to the site.
- ·Cost: €10 return, or €5 each way (2026).
- ·Journey time: about 45–52 minutes, with a stop in Pyrgos.
- ·Days: Monday to Saturday only. There is no Sunday train.
- ·Departures: one useful morning departure from Katakolo and one early-afternoon return. That is all you get.
- ·Where to board: Katakolo station, about 5 minutes' walk from the port gate along the main road. It is an unstaffed halt with an island platform.
- ·Tickets: buy on the platform, on board from the conductor, online, in the Hellenic Train app or by phone (14511).
- ·At Olympia: the station is a few minutes' walk from the museum and the site.
Times change between seasons, and several websites still show old timetables. Check hellenictrain.gr for your exact date before you sail, or ask at the station.
The train has no slack. Miss the return and there is no later train.
Private coach ("bus") to Olympia
There is no public bus we could confirm between Katakolo and Olympia. When people talk about the bus, they usually mean a private coach transfer.
- ·Where to board: sellers stand outside the port gate, and coaches pick up and drop off there.
- ·Journey time: about 35 minutes.
- ·Cost: prices vary by operator, and we could not verify a current fare. Ask before you pay.
- ·Operators: Grekaland Travel and Vlachopoulos Tours were named by readers in 2025.
- ·Return: you come back on the same coach, at its fixed time.
Check the return time before you hand over any money, and ask for it in writing. A coach that returns too late for your all-aboard is no use. On a Sunday, pre-book, because sellers may not turn up.
Taxi to Olympia
Taxis wait near the terminal. The drive takes about 30–45 minutes.
There is no reliable published fare, so agree the price before you leave. For Olympia, agree three things up front: the total round-trip fare, how long the driver will wait, and the return time. Waiting time is charged, so a taxi day costs much more than the train.
A common trick is a low one-way quote followed by a high price for waiting and the drive back. Settle the full amount first. Rideshare apps are not a realistic option here.
A taxi is also the easier choice for limited mobility.
Comparing the options
| Option | Cost | Time each way | Days | Return | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Walk to village | Free | 5–10 min | Every day | Any time | A slow day in Katakolo |
| Hellenic Train | €10 return (2026) | 45–52 min | Mon–Sat | One early-afternoon train | Cheapest Olympia trip |
| Private coach | Varies by operator | About 35 min | Every day; pre-book on Sunday | Fixed time, same coach | Sundays, simpler transfer |
| Taxi | Agree before you leave | 30–45 min | Every day | Your agreed time | Flexibility, limited mobility |
Add €20 per person for the Olympia ticket, which covers the archaeological site and Olympia's museums (€10 reduced, 2026).
At Olympia: hours and heat
The site is open daily 08:00–20:00 from April to August. It closes earlier from September, at 18:00 in late October, and runs 08:30–15:30 from November to March. Last entry is 20 minutes before closing.
Allow 1.5–2 hours for the site and 45–60 minutes for the Archaeological Museum. The ruins have very little shade, so do the open-air site first, carry water and wear a hat. Use the museum in the hottest part of the day. Skip the smaller Museum of the History of the Olympic Games in Antiquity if the train return is tight.
When to head back
The rule is simple. Take the early-afternoon train back from Olympia. If you miss it, leave Olympia by taxi no later than 15:00 for a 17:30 all-aboard. That is 2.5 hours before all-aboard, to cover finding a taxi, the 30–45 minute drive and clearing the port gate. From Katakolo village, start back 60 minutes before all-aboard.
Private coaches return only at their fixed times, so the coach's time is your time.
| All-aboard | Latest taxi from Olympia | Leave Katakolo village |
|---|---|---|
| 16:30 | 14:00 | 15:30 |
| 17:30 | 15:00 | 16:30 |
| 18:30 | 16:00 | 17:30 |
If you need a taxi in Olympia, ask a café or the museum ticket desk to call one. There is no app alternative. If you are going to miss all-aboard, phone the port agent number on your daily programme straight away.
Common mistakes
- ·Planning to take the train on a Sunday. There is no Sunday train. Pre-book a coach transfer, take a taxi or book the ship's tour.
- ·Assuming there is a later train. The return is a single early-afternoon train. If you miss it, take a taxi and leave Olympia by 15:00.
- ·Visiting the site at midday without water or a hat. Do the open-air site first, then the museum.
- ·Getting into a taxi without agreeing the full deal. Agree the total fare, waiting time and return time before you set off.
- ·Paying for a coach without checking its return time. You must come back on the same coach. Make sure it fits your all-aboard.
If you stay in the village instead, the free Kotsanas Museum of Ancient Greek Technology is a good use of an hour. Its opening hours are not published, so ask locally.
For terminals, beaches and the rest of the day, see the full Katakolon port guide. To work out your own leave-by times, plan your day with your own all-aboard time.
