Best Mediterranean Cruise Ports for Independent Travel — Ranked
PortTrip ranked 12 major Mediterranean cruise ports on three things: how easy they are to navigate alone, how much can go wrong on the way back, and how good the independent day is. DIY costs are the typical day from our checked port guides, at 2026 prices. Ship excursion prices vary by line, so compare with your own cruise planner.
Leave-by times assume a 17:30 all-aboard unless stated.
The ranking
1. Split, Croatia — Score: 10/10
Why it tops the list: You walk 5–20 minutes round the harbour to the Riva and into Diocletian's Palace. The palace streets, gates and Peristyle are free and open 24 hours. Only the cellars (€10), cathedral, bell tower and Jupiter's Temple (€4) charge.
Typical DIY day: about €22 · Leave by: the Riva by 16:00 (breakwater) or 16:15 (inner quays) · Tender: Mainly docking; some ships tender when berths are full
2. Valletta, Malta — Score: 9.5/10
Why: A 10–15 minute walk along the Waterfront to the Upper Barrakka lift (€1) puts you at the edge of the old city. Upper Barrakka Gardens are free. St John's Co-Cathedral is €15 and closed on Sundays. Mdina is about 30 minutes by bus at €2–2.50 each way, on calls of 8 hours or more.
Typical DIY day: about €25 · Leave by: the top of the lift by 16:00 · Tender: No
3. Dubrovnik, Croatia — Score: 9/10
Why: Bus 1A or 1B costs €2.50 on board and takes 15–20 minutes to Pile Gate. The City Walls are €40, including Fort Lovrijenac. The one complication is the return: in summer, full buses pass the Pile stop and the coast road backs up.
Typical DIY day: about €45 · Leave by: Pile Gate by 15:45 · Tender: Usually docked at Gruž; a third ship may anchor and tender into the old harbour
4. Athens (Piraeus), Greece — Score: 8.5/10
Why: Walk to the metro (15 minutes from Terminal A, 30 from B and C), then €1.20 for 90 minutes and about 17–20 minutes to Monastiraki. The Acropolis is a 10–15 minute uphill walk. Book the Acropolis slot (€30) in advance.
Typical DIY day: about €54 · Leave by: on the metro by 14:45 (Terminal A) or 14:30 (B and C) · Tender: No
5. Lisbon, Portugal — Score: 8/10
Why: From Jardim do Tabaco it is a flat 14-minute walk to Praça do Comércio, and Alfama is right behind the terminal. Tram 15E to Belém is €3.30 on board, about 38 minutes. Sintra works only on a call of 9 hours or more.
Typical DIY day: about €43 · Leave by: Belém by 15:15; Alfama or the Baixa by 16:00 · Tender: No
6. Barcelona, Spain — Score: 8/10
Why: The Cruise Bus costs €3.50 one way or €5 return and takes about 10 minutes. The Gothic Quarter is free. Sagrada Família (€26) needs a timed booking and about 30 minutes by metro from Drassanes.
Typical DIY day: about €37 · Leave by: at the Cruise Bus stop by 16:15 · Tender: No
7. Venice, Italy — Score: 7.5/10
Why: The vaporetto down the Grand Canal is the sight. From Marittima, the People Mover (€1.50) and vaporetto (€9.50 for 75 minutes) get you to St Mark's in 45–60 minutes. St Mark's Basilica (€10) and the Doge's Palace (€35) need timed slots.
Typical DIY day: about €64 · Leave by: St Mark's 2 hours before all-aboard from Marittima or San Basilio · Tender: No, but check your berth: Marghera and Fusina add a shuttle
8. Rome (Civitavecchia), Italy — Score: 7/10
Why: The FL5 train is direct and cheap: €4.60 to San Pietro (50–60 minutes) or €5 to Termini (75–85 minutes). Deduction: two train journeys leave you four to five hours in Rome, and Colosseum slots open only 30 days ahead.
Typical DIY day: about €34 · Leave by: on a train out of Rome 3 hours before all-aboard (15:30 from San Pietro for 18:30) · Tender: No
9. Naples, Italy — Score: 7/10
Why: The old town is 10–20 minutes on foot. For Pompeii, the Circumvesuviana costs €3.30 one way and takes about 35 minutes from Garibaldi. Deduction: trains run only every 30 minutes, strikes are not rare, and Pompeii tickets are named and capped at 20,000 a day in season.
Typical DIY day: about €27 · Leave by: on a train back from Pompeii by 14:30 · Tender: No
10. Santorini, Greece — Score: 6.5/10
Why: The caldera views from Fira and Oia are free, and the bus to Oia is €2.20 each way. Deduction: every ship tenders. The cable car (€10 each way, 2025) moves about 600 people an hour downhill, and the afternoon queue can take an hour or more.
Typical DIY day: about €24 · Leave by: at the top cable car station by 15:00; leave Oia by 14:00 · Tender: Yes, always
11. Florence (Livorno), Italy — Score: 6/10
Why: When it works, Florence is a great day. Deduction: the port shuttle, a bus to Livorno Centrale and a 70–90 minute train each way (€11.40) leave the least time in the city of any port here. Pisa is easier: €3 and 15–20 minutes by train.
Typical DIY day: about €27 for transport · Leave by: on a train out of Santa Maria Novella 3.5 hours before all-aboard (15:00 for 18:30) · Tender: No
12. Mykonos, Greece — Score: 6/10
Why: Mykonos Town is walkable and free. Deduction: ships either dock at Tourlos, a Sea Bus ride (€2–2.50, 10–12 minutes) from town, or tender to the Old Port. There are few taxis and the coast road has no pavement in places.
Typical DIY day: about €45 with Delos; town alone is a few euros · Leave by: the Old Port Sea Bus or tender pier by 16:00 · Tender: Sometimes; set per call
The pattern
The best ports for independent travel share three things: you come ashore within walking distance of the old town, or there is cheap direct transport to it; the main sight is clearly defined; and the return does not depend on a long train or a tender queue.
Split and Valletta lead because the walk from the ship is the whole journey. The others need varying amounts of planning, mostly around the return.
