Beaches Near Grand Cayman Cruise Port: Seven Mile Beach and More
Quick answer: The nearest proper beach is Seven Mile Beach, via Seven Mile Public Beach or Governor's Beach, 10–15 minutes north of George Town by road. The beach is public and free. Public bus routes 1 and 2 cost a few dollars in cash on weekdays; at weekends take a taxi. If you only want to snorkel, Eden Rock and Cheeseburger Reef are a few minutes' walk from the tender landings. Grand Cayman is a tender-only port: leave Seven Mile Beach 2 hours before all-aboard.
Where the ships anchor
Grand Cayman has no cruise pier. Every ship anchors off George Town, and tenders land at one of three terminals on the waterfront: South Terminal, North Terminal and Royal Watler. They are all a short walk apart, in the middle of town. Taxis wait at the George Town cruise taxi stand.
The tender crossing itself is about four minutes. The wait is the problem. Passengers on ship tours go ashore first; everyone else takes a number and waits. Unloading a ship of about 4,000 passengers takes around two hours, and up to four ships can share the anchorage. On a busy day independent passengers reach land later in the morning, which shortens your beach time.
When westerly swells make George Town unsafe, ships are moved to the Spotts landing on the south coast, or the call is cancelled. Your ship announces this on the day. The beach plans below assume a normal George Town landing.
Seven Mile Public Beach and Governor's Beach
- ·How to get there: public bus route 1 or 2, or a taxi.
- ·Time: 10–15 minutes by road. By bus, 15–20 minutes of driving plus waiting for it to fill.
- ·Cost: the beach is free. The bus is CI$2 or US$2.50 one way in cash according to a January 2026 resident guide; the tourist board says fares start at CI$2.50, so carry a little extra in small notes.
- ·What it's like: soft sand and calm water on most days. Busy when four ships are in.
The buses are minibuses with blue number plates and "Public Bus" on the side, marked with yellow (route 1) and lime green (route 2) stickers. They leave from the bus terminal on Edward Street, next to the Public Library, a few blocks inland from the landings. You can also flag one down on West Bay Road. Tell the driver your stop. US and CI dollars are both accepted.
The catch is the weekend. On Saturdays and Sundays the service is limited and unscheduled. You may get there by bus, but do not count on one to get you back.
Taxis have no meters. Fares are set by the government per route and change with the number of passengers and bags. Look up the fare in the free CI:GO app, then confirm the price and the currency with the driver before you set off. Card acceptance varies, so carry small notes. Uber and Lyft do not operate.
Watch for jet skis near the public beach; swim zones are limited.
Cemetery Beach (West Bay end)
- ·How to get there: taxi, or a bus towards West Bay.
- ·Time: about 20 minutes by road.
- ·Cost: free.
- ·What it's like: a 5–10 minute swim out to the reef, with good snorkelling.
This is the snorkeller's end of Seven Mile Beach. It is further from the landings, so it suits a long call. Medical help is far from the West Bay snorkel sites. Snorkel with someone and stay aware of boats.
Smith Barcadere (Smith's Cove), South Sound
- ·How to get there: taxi.
- ·Time: a short taxi ride south of town.
- ·Cost: free.
- ·What it's like: a small sandy cove between ironshore rocks, with coral heads close in.
Smith Barcadere is small. It suits you if you want sand and snorkelling in one spot, but it is a taxi trip both ways. Check the CI:GO fare before you go.
Eden Rock and Cheeseburger Reef, George Town
- ·How to get there: walk along the waterfront from the landings.
- ·Time: a few minutes on foot.
- ·Cost: free. Gear hire extra.
- ·What it's like: shore snorkelling, not a beach.
If your call is short or the queue to get ashore was long, this is the realistic option. You need no transport at all. Stay close to the shore and watch for boat traffic.

When to head back
The guide rule: be in the tender queue at George Town 90 minutes before all-aboard, and leave Seven Mile Beach 2 hours before. For a 17:30 all-aboard that means leaving the beach at 15:30 and queuing by 16:00. The drive takes 10–15 minutes by taxi in normal traffic. Buses can wait to fill, so if one does not come quickly, take a taxi.
We apply the same 2-hour rule to Cemetery Beach and Smith Barcadere. Both are further or need a taxi you have to find. From Eden Rock, allow a few extra minutes on top of the 90-minute rule to walk back and change.
| Leave from | 16:00 all-aboard | 17:00 all-aboard | 17:30 all-aboard |
|---|---|---|---|
| Seven Mile Beach, Cemetery Beach or Smith Barcadere | 14:00 | 15:00 | 15:30 |
| Eden Rock and Cheeseburger Reef | 14:20 | 15:20 | 15:50 |
| George Town waterfront (tender queue) | 14:30 | 15:30 | 16:00 |
Departures here range from 15:00 to 18:00, so check your own time. If you are late, take a taxi from the cruise or resort taxi stands; most beach areas are 10–20 minutes from the landings. If you will not make the last tender, call the port agent number on your daily programme at once. To set this up for your ship, plan your day with your own all-aboard time.
Common mistakes

- ·Relying on the public bus at the weekend. Service is limited and unscheduled on Saturdays and Sundays. Use a taxi to get back.
- ·Getting into a taxi without agreeing the fare. Check the government fare in the CI:GO app and confirm price, currency and whether it covers the whole group.
- ·Paying in US dollars and getting change in CI dollars. Use small US notes or a card.
- ·Joining the tender queue 30 minutes before all-aboard. With up to four ships in port, queues build in the last two hours. Aim for 90 minutes.
- ·Snorkelling alone or far out. Medical help is far from the West Bay sites. Stay close to shore and watch for boats and jet skis.
